A Chaffee County woman is missing after a neighbor said she went out for a bike ride Sunday and never returned, sparking a search involving more than 100 emergency personnel.

The Chaffee County Communications Center received a report on Sunday at 5:46 p.m. regarding a missing woman in the area of County Road 225 and West Highway 50.


Anybody who has information on Morphew’s whereabouts is asked to call the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office at 719-539-2596 or Chaffee County Crime Stoppers at 719-539-2599.

The autopsy has been completed on the remains of missing Colorado mom Suzanne Morphew, nearly four years after she was first reported missing. Morphew's remains were located last fall during a search on Sept. 22, 2023, in the area of Moffat in Saguache County.

Morphew was last seen on Mother's Day nearly four years ago, May 10, 2020. Her disappearance made national headlines and the investigation was featured on the CBS News show "48 Hours."

Suzanne Morphew left behind two teenage daughters and a husband, Barry Morphew, who was not only the prime suspect in her disappearance, he was also charged with her murder.

Investigators were searching in the area of Moffat in Saguache County on an investigation not related to the Morphew disappearance when her remains were discovered.

Suzanne disappeared after leaving her home for a bike ride on Mother's Day 2020 and what happened next remains a mystery. Her bicycle was found down a steep ravine off Chaffee County Road 225 from Highway 50. Deputies said that the bicycle did not look like it was involved in a crash and there was not any blood at the scene. After she went missing, Barry Morphew told CBS News Colorado that he believed she was abducted before he was subsequently arrested for her murder in 2021.

A judge dismissed the case against Barry Morphew in April 2022. At the time, the 11th Judicial District Attorney, Linda Stanley, filed the motion to "dismiss without prejudice" which means that prosecutors could file charges against Barry Morphew at a later date.

The attorney for Barry Morphew released a statement on behalf of his family following the discovery of his wife's remains, that read in part, "From what we know, Barry is as innocent as he was from Day 1. DA Stanley and law enforcement got it wrong. We hope the authorities will quickly admit their wrongful persecution of Barry, an innocent man, to treat the Morphews like the victims they are, and charge the person(s) responsible for Suzanne's killing."

No arrests have been made since her remains have been located. The public is asked to continue to report any information about this case by calling (719) 312-7530.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the report from the Chaffee County Medical Examiner is expected to be released next week.

Yeah he also claimed she was abducted but a mountain lion. I assume in the below statement was when he changed to a human.

Barry Morphew told CBS News Colorado that he believed she was abducted before he was subsequently arrested for her murder in 2021.

I hope and pray there will also. She so deserves justice. We know one thing, no mountain lion drug her to where she was found and disposed of her in that way. Barry's first and foremost story.

Chaffee County did the autopsy?? She was found in Saguache County...
 
I cannot believe the lack of attention on this out there, or perhaps that no one seems to have heard the results are coming. This case was over the top forever AND more than a few still do occasional shows on it. It's almost like no one has heard this?

This is a top case of mine--probably THE top one of the last years and I almost forget but did NOT because of the silence and the fact Delphi, Daybell, Read are all hot and about at trial or in trial now.

This bothers me the lack of fanfare or announcement. I looked back to see what station had the news on it here to be sure it wasn't some obscure one but it is CBS.

I HOPE and I PRAY they found enough for justice, however, no arrests heard of and so I am tempering self for disappointment. It is my opinion and only my opnion that it is beyond evident Daddy Dearest killed his wife or had someone do so. I believe he did so.

If this ends up with no answers or the wrong wonges, then @Cousin Dupree it isn't like I never believe in corruption and I would think it here if that is what happens.

And why in the HE77 would the Chaffee County ME be handling an exam like this? Tell me this is just them giving the results and she or much was sent out?? Also her body was not found in Chaffee.

As far as we know, there has been no arrest/s, they have not given a day of a PC or when the results will come this week and little is being made of it, hasn't hit a lot of news and those that are big on the case seem to not be aware of this "announcement". I don't like what any of that signifies. I hope I'm wrong.

I pray there is justice and there are results that bring it.

I have no doubt who did this/was behind it. I generally never go 100 percent but in this one I am as close as one gets without being 100 percent. 99.9 and I NEVER do that.

According to the CBI, the agencies investigating the Morphew case have determined her death to be "Homicide by undetermined means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication."

"The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and our law enforcement partners understand and appreciate the public interest surrounding this case," said CBI Director Chris Schaefer in a statement. "The investigative team assembled to work this case continues to follow the evidence and only the evidence as we seek justice for Suzanne's death."

According to the National Institutes of Health, "Butorphanol is a synthetic opioid which is used as a nasal spray for treatment of migraine headaches and parenterally as a narcotic analgesic for moderate-to-severe pain or as an adjunct to general anesthesia."

The NIH also cites the butorphanol-azaperone-medetomidine combination as being "effective, safe, and easy-to-use protocols in bears" when conducting "immobilization."

THIS ONE is my PET CASE and has been since it happened through now. Of course it slowed down and quieted and those bozos of defense attys somehow had the judge in their pocket which by the way does need to change.

I know I argued this one hard or at least stood firm against the DNA and anyone saying anything else here where they questioned his guilt. I've never had a shred of doubt to 99.9 percent this man did this from day one almost. Rarely am I so certain out of the gate. I've stood firm throughout, that DNA never ONCE affected me, just like the DNA in Delphi doesn't.

The man is a monster. I suspect as many have thought that Suzanne was chased with the tranquilizer gun and was terrified in her last moments. Other scenarios could be the case as well but things kind of fit with this scenario rather than him shooting her without her expecting it. I guess that's possible too...

The case needs a new judge because the last one couldn't even understand how he was sn*wed on the DNA nor could he understand Webex was not hacked. Finally, he is swayed easily by the Denver old "girls" (the D attorneys).

I hope he ends up having to drop his b.s. lawsuit and everything else. And sickeningly his D attorneys will rally a response somehow that will be b.s. of course. Personally I'd drop him like a hot potato if I were them but that's not who they are.

I'm not one to say I told ya so EVER but I told ya all so. I am indulging and doing it this ONCE for what is my TOP CASE/PET CASE. I had NO DOUBT IN THIS ONE EVER. Not a BLIP. Sadly Barry is a type I recognize easily and I think a lot of women do. Not the murdering part but a lot of other things. And his stories from the start were so bogus from the bike ride on and then his fake reward and 20 some second speech on bended knee. UGH. Disgusting man.

The only thing I wonder is if he truly dumped her and buried her so shallowly and if this was her first resting spot. I often did think it likely he went in another direction with her body before then heading for his alibi in Broomfield later. However, I would have expected him to hide her better but then this is a place where some would maybe associate a body to someone else rather than to him...

I'm sorry but I hope he has one huge fallout going on with the daughters and any gf he may still have, etc. and anyone else who stood by him. Anyone who stood up for SM and said he did this can feel vindicated.

No one anywhere needs to dare say to me this tranquilizer could have been shot into her or given to her by someone other than Barry. Get real. Not with all the facts.

I don't think so. Lauren Scharf and others explained how wrong everyone has this DNA including the judge. Seriously. Been explained by those who understand that and get it. They need a judge who "gets" it and not that one. Also there are politics all around this case that affected it. That needs to change. AND the prosecution needs to show the judge just what b.s. the DNA is. Kind of hard to do with a judge who understands none of that when explained nor what hacking is and seals an AA for all the wrong reasons not cited by law.

There is a body now and presence of the very things Barry used, knew and did and equipment he had also of which some evidence was found of before they EVER found her body long after. This strong sh*t with all they already had, wow is it icing on the cake. BUt they need a just with some smarts, a fair one. Not one influenced by Ms. and Ms. Old Denver "high powered" defense attys. Nor by politics locally in the county either.

I'm sure this was all considered, I'd think...I wonder if they have to advise next of kin about findings and that would be he and the girls...:thinking: Of course he is lawyered up but then advising of your wife's cause of death or contributing factors well are something any hub would expect to be told or any child of hers right... Can't recall lol but I think ol' icky Iris said something about them not being notified the right way about the finding of her body or some such and next of kin. Well duh... I don't recall exactly how it went but there was something about it... Notified BArry but not the girls or something. SO? Not even sure that was it but she made some stupid thing a statement.

I'm also realizing he has to have been worried since her body was found although whether he knew they could still find this, not sure... But I bet he checked... I wonder like if in LISK if they got warrants when they knew the findings and before we knew.... You know like based on these findings to surveillance his phone/s, trips, Google searches... I think it will be like Daybell where the kids stand by him despite all the evidence.

Did you notice they found the substance in the bone marrow of the femur? I thought that was amazing after so long and the state the remains were in.
