ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Wasn't sure where to put this. VERY big story back when it happened.

Alexis Murphy has finally been found.

Authorities on Wednesday announced the remains of Murphy, who went missing seven years ago at age 17, were found in Nelson County in December.

Murphy went missing Aug. 3, 2013 after visiting a gas station in Lovingston. Randy Allen Taylor, 55, was found guilty of murder and abduction in the disappearance of Murphy in May 2014; he's serving two life sentences.

The remains were located Dec. 3 on private property near Stagebridge Road, along U.S. 29 in Lovingston. The Nelson County Sheriff's Office received positive identification of the remains as Murphy's on Feb. 5, the sheriff's office said on social media on Wednesday afternoon.
I remember following this case when it happened. I’m so glad that her family is able to put her remains at rest.

How bittersweet for the family. I am glad they found her and can lay her to rest.

Why do some of these things seem to happen in clusters? Another child inside a stolen car. And some of these thefts are pretty brazen, right when the car owner is apparently nearby or just missing for a few seconds... Thank goodness the child is safe.

happens every winter

Kind of interesting. It is about the human side of the story but I do wonder if any were due to a serial killer... This a a large number of women.

Her car was found damaged, then moved. I was really expecting foul play.
I figure foul play too. They haven't ruled it out have they? This is all I saw from that article re that.

"There was no word on whether investigators believe foul play was involved in Lloyd's death. We are awaiting additional details from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department."
