ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

I didn't mean for you to delete them, I just couldn't see them. Sorry :hugs:

Not a big deal. There were questions yesterday, some records had changed. Today I saw that link and thought we had an answer. I was able to look it up and find the same information independently and yet no news org or anything has confirmed it that I can find. Kind of odd. I would rather it was verified anyhow. Records still vary as well.

911 operators couldn’t trace the location of a dying student’s phone. It’s a growing issue.
Yeming Shen called 911 on Feb. 10. He was alone in his Troy, N.Y., apartment, dying of the flu. But the garbled call was unintelligible to the operators, and police couldn’t pinpoint the phone’s location.
For 45 minutes after Shen called 911, five police officers, three firefighters and a police dog searched in vain for the student. All they had was a general area encompassing two apartment buildings. They eventually gave up without finding Shen.
Six hours later, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student’s roommate discovered his body, the Times Union first reported.
The case highlights issues that have plagued 911 phone systems across the country since the advent of smartphones. Cellphone privacy settings and outdated dispatch mapping systems continue to frustrate first responders when they can’t find callers. <snip>
Calls being routed to another agency is so common that most systems allow operators to transfer calls to neighboring centers.

The response to the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Fla., was delayed because calls to 911 were routed to two different dispatch centers depending on whether callers were using cellphones or landlines, a commission set up after the shooting found. Overwhelmed by the volume of calls, dispatch dropped some and didn’t transfer others. <snip>

Family killed by Customs and Border agent in apparent murder-suicide identified
ORLANDO, Fla. —
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent killed his wife and two children in Orange County before turning the gun on himself, authorities in Orange County said Thursday.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that those found dead at the Corner Glen Drive home in east Orange County have been identified as Ezequiel Almodovar, 39, Marielis Soto, 38, Ezequiel Almodovar, 16, and Gabriel Almodovar, 12. <snip>
Investigators said the older Almodovar worked as an officer for Customs and Border Protection at Orlando International Airport. Deputies were called to the home by someone concerned for the family’s well-being after they hadn’t been seen in a week.

Neighbors told WESH 2 News that they didn’t hear anything suspicious.<snip>
Investigators have not said why they believe the killings happened, or why they believe Almodovar was the killer. They have also not said when they believe the family was killed. <snip>

Utica sex offender accused of new crime against 14-year-old girl six weeks after release
Updated Feb 24, 2020; Posted Feb 24, 2020
UTICA, N.Y. — A Utica sex offender has been arrested after an alleged sex crime against a 14-year-old girl, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Maurice M. Jones, 57, was charged with sexual contact with the teen for an alleged crime Feb. 14. He’d been out of prison for about six weeks after being imprisoned for rape in 1989, according to prison records. <snip>

City investigators say DOE official accused of sex crime lied on application
City investigators claimed at a hearing Monday that they never would have learned that a Department of Education official who was busted for seeking sex with a teenager was accused of misconduct at a previous job — because he lied on disclosure forms. <snip>
The DOI admits it had only partially completed Hay’s background check, because he was part of a backlog of 5,122 applications. But Garnett insisted that “derogatory information about Mr. Hay would likely not have been shared with either DOE or DOI in any event” because of the NDA and the alleged perjury. <snip>
Councilman Ritchie Torres, chair of the oversight committee, didn’t buy Garnett’s excuse that Hay would have made it through the vetting process.

“That strikes me as convenient speculation, but one one knows for sure if that’s true,” Torres said.

“If we had asked Mr. Hay, ‘Did you have a nondisclosure agreement?’ and he confirmed, ‘Yes,’ then that would have been a red flag that would have disqualified him from being hired,” Torres told reporters after the hearing. <snip>

two six year olds were arrested within a week ... by the same officer? This was disgusting (I do mot think the school expected an arrest). Do watch the video if you have followed this one. happened I/19/2019. The officer has since been fired

Video shows police arresting 6-year-old girl at school
The child had zip ties put around her wrists as she cried and pleaded to be let go.

In the police report from the incident, authorities say police were responding to a report that the 6-year-old "battered three staff members by kicking and punching them" at her school, the Lucious and Emma Nixon Academy in Orlando.

The girl was charged with battery, but those charges were not pursued, according to NBC Orlando-affiliate WESH.

The video shows that after the child is put in the back of the police car Turner goes back inside the school, where at least one employee is seen wiping away tears.

"Are the restraints, are they necessary?" another, visibly upset school employee asks.

"Yes," the officer replies. "And, if she was bigger she would've been wearing regular handcuffs."

Sarah Boone, 42, was charged with second-degree murder after she allegedly zipped her boyfriend into a suitcase and left him there until he died.
Orange County Florida Sheriff's Office

Boone called 911 Monday afternoon from her Winter Park home and told dispatchers her boyfriend was dead, news outlets reported. Investigators said she claimed they had been drinking the night before and agreed it would be funny if Torres got into the suitcase during a game of hide-and-seek. Boone reportedly admitted she zipped Torres into the suitcase, went upstairs to bed and awoke the next morning to find him still inside and unresponsive,

The sheriff's office said Boone's statements didn't line up with video evidence found on her phone showing a blue suitcase facing downward with Torres trying to free himself. In the video, he called for help and yelled that he couldn't breathe, authorities said. Boone could be heard laughing and saying: “That’s what I feel like when you cheat on me,"
