ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

I really can't understand why so many LE depts don't insist on body cameras. Do they not realize how much $$ it could save on just one lawsuit not having to be paid out because there was proof that their claim was bogus? Does the public not realize how much $$ is paid out on lawsuits that they did not know even existed because it was paid out before it even went to court?
I totally agree as I think you know. I suppose in some cases it might be budget but I see it as no excuse, like you say the claims it could shut right down with proof would pay for itself one would think... It should be made mandatory.

The knowledge all LE wears them and are required to keep them on might just deter a few crimes as well by those who hope to turn something around on the officer...

I need a LOT more info on this one...

This is a bit unclear. It sounds as if they have been after him for some time but he has been fighting extradition. It sounds as if they took DNA from his son possibly years back. However, it credits advances in DNA so maybe it is recent and that gives a reason now to bring him back? I don't know but regardless there are cold cases sure getting solved this year, 2020 has been bad, but man, there have been a lot of cold or old cases with arrests or at least answers...
