Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Also, Gough, Bryan’s attorney, is raising concerns that the final jury pool will be missing a certain demographic: white men older than 40 and without four-year college degrees. He has referred to them as “Bubbas or Joe six-packs” — in other words, blue-collar jurors who look like Bryan.

“We want a diverse jury,” Gough said during an interview Tuesday outside the courthouse. “But we’re missing a segment of what would normally be here.”

Boy I don't know. This doesn't sound very fair just like the other way around would not either... But then jurors shouldn't be picked or ditched because they are male or female, black or white, young or old nor any other thing like that BUT it has always been that way... Each side comes up with types they think are more likely to think a certain way or side their way and that's what they look for or likewise ditch if they think the person isn't going to be convinced of their side...

It also is somewhat the luck of the draw of who gets called in what order and each side gets how many strikes right..?. And well I think plenty of white people, men, females, young people, old people, etc. feel what the defendants did was very out of line too... And others don't... Tough one. This case is going to be something else the way it is looking so far...

This definitely does not feel like a "luck of the draw" situation though.

I don't disagree but it was not aired to know if there were other problems with each prospective juror or different reasons. It seems very unfair at least and again, the other way around would likely never be stood for nor left to stand--EVER.

With the Chauvin trial, we got to hear all of the jurors other than maybe when they had to go to chambers over something or another/privacy of a juror quite often, etc. and both sides were present in chambers I imagine (attorneys)... Maybe they should have employed something similar here or found a way and then we would not question so much why they were struck as we would hear the questions and answers give by each, etc. With many through the long process in Chauvin, the reasons for some being struck or dismissed were quite clear to viewers based on prospective juror answers, etc. At least they often were clear I thought... I did think the judge himself should have struck a few in that case rather than either side's attorneys having to use a strike in some cases because obvious bias etc. was present but other than that, the way they did it I thought worked pretty well...

I haven't watched anything basically nor read much recently on this jury process in this trial and they are not airing it even without their faces so I don't know the reasons defense gave when they struck jurors or in arguing to the judge when the prosecution filed this of what their reasons for it were or for each.

It doesn't seem right. I am less than enamored with our system the last few years. Light sentences, criminals on the street with serious records a mile long let out for some reason, and more--things like this.

I will say one other thing, in almost all cases, the defendants get bent over backwards for by the judge. Appeal chances I guess or a mistrial. It is disgusting to me. Our system needs a major overhaul at least in some areas imo. And sentencing and release? Hmm, another subject for some other time.

I still think there will be a conviction and if not, a mistrial. I believe that many white people are disgusted by this as well.
That's what I was trying to say earlier too. I am disgusted by it and many, many people out there are. My family is as well... Friends. Every single one that I have discussed this case with...

It's not ideal but think about if they get a conviction with almost no black people on the jury... It will be a LOT harder to say it wasn't fair or one demographic was not represented so that is why the verdict, etc...

It could actually backfire on them in the sense of how do you appeal that? You almost couldn't on that basis at least I don't think... So one less appeal...

I have faith because that video.... Wow. But I also see people out there going on that this bunch had every right and thought they were doing the good citizen thing, etc. or defending their property, neighborhood, etc... Hopefully it's mainly trolls but I do think there are a few who really do think that way...

It's not that "black people will vote to convict and white people won't". We all know people of any race can have any political leaning and see evidence however they're going to see it.

It's more that the defense "appeared to" "intentionally discriminate" against black jurors in the trial of a killing of a black man by white men.
And that one POC does NOT represent the demographics of the area.

What does POC mean? Drawing a blank. Just speaking for myself, I am not up on this case and I don't know enough of whether they intentionally discriminated for my opinion, I'm sure everyone else is more up on it than I. That's the thing, I haven't watched, it was not televised nor even voice heard and I don't know how it came about, how jurors came up in what order, if one was struck after another after another in a row, nor anything about it and their reasons stated when they did strike those jurors, nor answers given by jurors. No idea. That's just an effort by me to say my opinion is not based on being well read on it or up on it.

My instinct though? It definitely appears very convenient and intentional with the little I know or have read in the Tweets above. No argument there. It is extremely concerning. The judge sided with the defense and I hope to read his overall reasons at some point, and the arguments made by each side.

Thank you. I saw it I think twice this week and my first thought was Chief of Police lol and that was backwards on the letters and it didn't fit the context either. So I see it again tonight and finally had to ask. I truly had no idea, it is not one I have used nor seen much. Going forward, I will try to remember now that I know.

I swear he is making the state's case for them. He kept talking about Travis' coast guard training. And, keeps mentioning that AA could be armed. So, Travis shows his weapon to try to DEESCALATE the situation. He was trying to protect his Dad who had had a stroke. Oh, and he was trying to protect his 3yo son who wasn't even there. Jeez o flip!!
