Alabama murder suspect vanishes with corrections officer *CAPTURED IN INDIANA*

A sheriff's office in Alabama issued an alert Friday night after an inmate and the assistant director of corrections went missing earlier in the day. Authorities said the inmate, who was being held on capital murder charges, should be considered "armed and extremely dangerous."

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told reporters Friday night that Vicki White, a 25-year veteran at the department, left the local detention center with Casey Cole White at 9:41 a.m. He said she told other officials she was going to drop him off at the courthouse for a mental health evaluation and then was going to seek medical attention because she wasn't feeling well. Despite having the same last name, the two are not related.

Shortly after 11 a.m., someone found her patrol vehicle in a parking lot of a shopping center. At 3:30 p.m., officials became aware that no one had been able to contact her, and that the inmate had not been returned to custody.

Casey White should not be charged in Vicky White’s death, attorneys say

Casey White should not be charged with felony murder in the death of Vicky White because the law is unconstitutional, his lawyers argue in a court filing.

Authorities in Indiana, where Casey White in May was captured after an 11-day manhunt, said Vicky White – the jail officer who authorities say facilitated Casey White’s escape – took her own life with a gunshot to her head as police closed in.

Under Alabama law, White has been charged with felony murder because a death occurred while he was committing a felony. A Lauderdale County grand jury indicted White on the charge in June.

Casey White’s team of attorneys said in the motion said police video of the capture is clear that Vicky White took her own life.

“Police dash cam and body cam recordings clearly show that at the conclusion of a car chase, the vehicle driven by White wrecked and rolled over in a roadside ditch or median,” the motion said. “Video clearly shows that the deceased shot herself in the head and continued holding the gun in her hand as police approached. The death in this case was clearly a suicide and the defendant can not be convicted for the death.”

The defense motion said the law is outdated.

“Alabama’s felony-murder doctrine is an anachronistic remnant of ancient legal fiction with no logical or practical basis for inclusion in modern law,” the defense motion said. “England, where the doctrine originated, abolished the felony-murder rule in 1957. The United States and Alabama remain virtually the only Western governments still recognizing a doctrine which makes it possible for a citizen accused to face the most serious sanctions in the law for an accidental death in which they did not directly participate or cause.”
That law makes total sense to me and is definitely not outdated.

Prosecutors want Casey White murder trial in Vicky White’s death moved up

Prosecutors want Casey Cole White tried in December for the murder of Vicky White, the Lauderdale County jailer who aided his escape earlier this year.

In court documents filed on Sept. 30, District Attorney Chris Connelly requested that an arraignment be moved to Oct. 11, and that the trial commence on Dec. 12.

Currently, a hearing is scheduled on Oct. 11 for several defense motions, including barring the imposition of the death penalty.

Casey White is already set to stand trial for capital murder on Dec. 12 for the 2015 slaying of Connie Ridgeway of Rogersville.
So am I reading this correctly, they want both murder trials of two completely different people to commence on the same day? How would that work?? I'm ALL for moving things along but doesn't he have to be at both trials or have a right to be and the cases are totally unrelated to each other.

That law makes total sense to me and is definitely not outdated.
Especially since he knew exactly what they were doing and was part of it and could have stopped it at any time before the escape, during the escape, while they were on the run and the choice to flee LE when they found them. He was no naive unknowing child, he was fully part of it.

Casey White no longer being moved to Cullman County Jail

The plan to transfer Casey White to the Cullman County Jail is no longer happening according to online court documents.

In September, a hearing was approved by a judge to a discuss a motion to move White from Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer to the Cullman County Jail.

A motion was filed by White’s defense team on Friday stating, “housing Mr. White at the Cullman County Jail is no longer a viable option for the defendant and is therefore moot.”

It was requested in the same motion that a status conference remained scheduled in Lauderdale County for Oct. 11.

When the initial motion was filed to move White, the defense stated that it was unopposed. Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry released the following statement after the motion was filed:

“As I told Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton, and the Casey White legal team when we spoke, if the judge in the case ordered Mr. White be housed in the Cullman County Detention Center, my deputies, my command staff and I will make sure Mr. White is well guarded. He will be kept in solitary confinement 23 hours a day, only being allowed 1 hour in the exercise yard while still under guard, as mandated by law.

The safety of the citizens of Cullman County is, and will continue to be my first priority. However, we will also assist our fellow law enforcement officers so that Mr. White, an accused murderer, will have his day in court. Detention Deputies at the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office guard dangerous criminals every day. If the judge does order Mr. White be housed here, these deputies will continue to show the same professionalism and care toward our citizens to make sure they are protected.”

State will not seek death penalty for Casey White, trial postponed

The state of Alabama will no longer be seeking the death penalty for a man who is charged with a 2015 murder and escaping from the Lauderdale County Jail. The trial date has also been postponed to 2023.

Casey White was in the Lauderdale County Jail for an alleged 2015 murder when he escaped in April. On Tuesday, White appeared in court for the first time since May.

During the hearing Tuesday, District Attorney, Chris Connolly stated that the state would no longer be seeking the death penalty for the alleged murder of Connie Ridgeway.

The defense said that it would not have enough time for a December trial and has asked for it to be moved to either May or June. A judge has since ruled that it would be postponed but no date has been released.
The District Attorney is asking for the felony murder case for the death of Vicky White to go on trial before the capital murder case for the death of Ridgeway.

White’s defense team said the delay of trial was good for their strategy.

“The state is not seeking the death penalty on the original capital murder case,” he said. “That was certainly good news for us. We count that as a major milestone in our work. That literally cuts our work in half as far as far as the case goes. At this point, we’re treating it as any other case.”

They said they will work diligently to have the best possible strategy prepared.

“We don’t want to rush things and just try to hurry things for the sake of hurrying,” he said. “We have things that have to happen to be done. We’ll work through all these cases methodically in a normal matter that we would handle any other case.”

Casey White pleads not guilty to felony murder in death of Alabama corrections officer Vicky White

Former Alabama escapee Casey White pleaded not guilty Tuesday at his arraignment on escape and felony murder charges after his alleged accomplice in the jailbreak shot herself in the head rather than face arrest.

"We are not seeking the death penalty in [either of his pending cases]," Connolly told Fox News Digital Tuesday. "This decision was made after consultation with Connie Ridgeway’s sons."

Ridgeway is the 58-year-old Rogersville woman who White allegedly killed in 2015.

Connolly could have sought a maximum of the death penalty in the capital murder case. In Vicky White's death, in which Casey White was arraigned Tuesday, the maximum penalty if convicted would be life without parole – which the DA said he planned to seek.

One more case of many of these ridiculous delays. Do you Think about the victims families everytime there is a delay?. No

Nope. Judges have to worry too much about appeals and pleasing defendants. It is DISGUSTING. Familes are just victimized again and become victims themselves due to the system.

I do however think although Casey is a total scumbag that they are reaching with this case. I absolutely hate saying that but if they truly have evidence she shot herself and we know she broke him out and it was she who violated the position she was in and her role regardless of what he did to honey up to her and he did not kill her then this case is going to be a tough one...

Just as disgusting is that he wasn't already in hard core prioson for GOOD.

And they make it about him now BUT let's talk about the jail that they managed to pull this off at.... What's happening about that?

Movie based on Vicky White, Casey White escape from Alabama jail, manhunt debuts on streaming service

From disappearance to manhunt to the tragic end of a life, the story of Vicky White and Casey White appeared to have drama that could only come from a film script.

While Lauderdale County Assistant Director of Corrections Vicky and jail inmate Casey’s (no relation) 11 days on the run was a real-life drama, a film based on Vicky aiding Casey’s escape and the manhunt for the pair has gotten the small screen treatment.

“Prisoner of Love” debuted on Tubi, the Fox Entertainment-owned free streaming service, on Wednesday.

“A corrections officer falls in love with an inmate and helps plot his escape, leaving her hometown to question her choices,” reads the summary on the film’s website.

Or as text during the film’s title sequence puts it, “Prisoner of Love” is “based on a true story ... although no one ever really knows what happens in a secret romance.”

New murder trial dates set for Casey White

On Tuesday, a judge set a pair of new murder trial dates for Casey White, the former Lauderdale County inmate whose escape led to a national manhunt earlier this year.

Investigators say Vicky helped Casey escape from the Lauderdale County Detention Center in April. The sheriff’s office says the two were on the run for 11 days before he was captured and she died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

That trial date is set for April 17, 2023.

The capital murder trial for the death of Connie Ridgeway is set for June 12, 2023. Both sides have until January 27 to submit questions for a jury questionnaire.

Attorneys for accused murderer Casey Cole White have asked for his felony murder trial relating to last year’s escape from Lauderdale County Jail to be postponed.

White’s attorneys filed a motion Wednesday before Lauderdale County Circuit Judge Benjamin Graves.

White’s team of attorneys, led by Huntsville’s Mark McDaniel, said there will not be adequate time to prepare for the felony murder trial scheduled for April 23 while also preparing for White’s capital murder trial scheduled for June 12.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — On February 16, Lauderdale County Circuit Judge Ben Graves is expected to address a pending motion in the Casey White file and receive an update on the defense’s progress ahead of the trial.

Judge Graves said in a court order that Casey White’s attorneys had waived his appearance for the hearing on Thursday. Even so, the judge plans to address several motions.

In January, the state filed its proposed jury instructions for White’s felony murder trial, which is scheduled for mid-April. The defense is expected to discuss why it needs more time before the trial.

During the hearing, the judge plans to address the motion to continue White’s felony murder trial in the death of former Lauderdale County Correctional officer Vicky White.

Casey White felony murder trial in death of Vicky White set for June

On Thursday afternoon, a Lauderdale County Judge agreed to push Casey White’s felony murder trial from April to June.

The order followed a request from the defense for more time to prepare for the trial.

Court records show a jury trial has been set for Casey White’s felony murder charge on June 12.

During murder trials, Casey White won’t be held in jail Vicky White helped him escape from

Casey White, who was the subject of an 11-day manhunt with a jail supervisor in north Alabama in 2022, will not be held in the jail from which he escaped when he goes on trial for murder later this year.

“It is not my intention to bring him back to Lauderdale County,” Judge Benjamin Graves told White’s attorneys in a court hearing today in Lauderdale County.

Graves held the hearing to meet with the prosecutor and defense attorneys about scheduling White’s two murder trials.

In June, White is expected to go on trial in the death of Vicky White, the Lauderdale County jail supervisor who helped him escape last year.

In August, Casey White is expected to go on trial for capital murder in the 2015 slaying of Connie Ridgeway. Prosecutors say White confessed five years after Ridgeway’s death and claimed that someone paid him to kill her at her home in Rogersville.

He is already serving a 75-year prison sentence for a string of crimes, including robbery and attempted murder in Limestone County.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – Attorneys for Casey White have requested that his trial be moved from Lauderdale County, as it would “violate his rights to a fair trial by an impartial jury.”

White’s attorneys filed a motion to change venue on Monday for the felony murder charge stemming from the death of former Lauderdale County jail employee Vicky White. The motion cites local and national media coverage and social media discussion and speculation as reasons why a trial in Lauderdale County wouldn’t be fair or impartial.

<snip>
“Lauderdale County, Alabama, has a population of approximately 92,870 residents.
Nearly all of them own a television, phone, computer, tablet or combination of the four.
It would take a resident living in a dwelling without access to electricity or
communication from the outside world for the last month to not know a significant
amount of information about the Defendant, his capital murder case, and his other legal
matters. Therefore, to ensure that Mr. White receives a fair trial from an impartial jury
of his peers, it is imperative that this matter be transferred to another county whereas it
is obvious that Lauderdale County has been overwhelmed with prejudice towards Mr.
White that cannot be cured in any manner.”

I haven’t kept up with this case. Movie released in DECEMBER?! 8 months. I don't think I have ever seen a movie or documentary based on a case come out that fast. Usually, It's years. To me it appears it's the money to be made off the story and to make sure they did it first. Disgusting. There was no outrage about this?.

Oh in Daybell I think such happened and not to knock victims' families or friends (who may actually be accomplices) but they were right there doing it... The case wasn't even close to tried and there was a Lifetime movie, I think all the typical shows like 48 hours/20/20 and more...

FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – Casey White is set to return to Lauderdale County for a court appearance Thursday.

His April 2022 escape from the Lauderdale County Detention Center drew national attention. His court appearance Thursday is related to the death of the woman who helped him escape, Vicky White.

<snip>
As officers were closing in on the pair during a car chase, Vicky White died by suicide, according to law enforcement officials.

Casey White is charged with felony murder in her death. The felony murder charge is based on the idea that her death occurred while he was committing a crime – escaping from jail – so he is responsible for her death.

His murder trial is set for June 12th. Thursday’s status hearing comes as the two sides prepare for what’s expected to be a closely watched trial.

<snip>
Casey White is also scheduled to go on trial on Aug. 14 for capital murder in the 2015 stabbing death of Connie Ridgeway in Rogersville.

An Alabama inmate who escaped from jail with the help of a sheriff’s official and led police on an 11-day manhunt that ended with the official’s death took a plea deal Thursday, the district attorney said.

Casey White pleaded guilty to escape but not a murder count in connection with the death of the sheriff’s official who helped him, Vicky White.

“We consulted with Vicky White’s family prior to entering into this agreement. They approved the settlement and are relieved to get the case resolved without a lengthy jury trial followed by years of appeals,” Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said.

First-degree escape was the lesser of the two counts Casey White faced. He agreed to a life sentence, which will be imposed on June 8, Connolly said.

White’s already serving a 75-year sentence and faces trial in another murder.
