A sheriff's office in Alabama issued an alert Friday night after an inmate and the assistant director of corrections went missing earlier in the day. Authorities said the inmate, who was being held on capital murder charges, should be considered "armed and extremely dangerous."

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton told reporters Friday night that Vicki White, a 25-year veteran at the department, left the local detention center with Casey Cole White at 9:41 a.m. He said she told other officials she was going to drop him off at the courthouse for a mental health evaluation and then was going to seek medical attention because she wasn't feeling well. Despite having the same last name, the two are not related.

Seriously? They let ONE office transport an inmate held on capital murder charges who they now consider armed and extremely dangerous transport such a man? She was going to "drop him off"? And after that going to the dr. herself as she wasn't feeling well? This sounds like an average relaxed day in the life of anyone!! Ok, let's see I'm going to drop my mom off at Walmart so she can grab groceries, run to my hair appt. and then run back and pick her up... Say WHAT?? This is a murder suspect and a county detention center!!

The U.S. Marshals are offering $10,000 for information that helps capture the escaped Alabama inmate who went missing Friday along with sheriff’s deputy transporting him to court — for an appointment that was never on the books.

Inmate Casey Cole White and Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office Assistant Director of Corrections Vicki White were last seen at about 9:30 a.m. Friday when they left Lauderdale County Jail for the inmate’s court appearance. The officer was driving the alleged murderer by herself in a police car..

“She was alone which was a strict violation of policy,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said a press conference Friday.


Casey White, 38, had been charged with two counts of capital murder, and was already in jail for 2015 crime spree.

He “is believed to be a serious threat to the corrections officer and the public,” U.S. marshal Marty Keely said in a statement.

The vehicle Vicki White was transporting the inmate in was found in a shopping center parking lot on Friday around 11 a.m., and the sheriff’s office said it was not aware that the two were missing until mid-afternoon.

Single said Friday that the officer told colleagues she bringing Casey White to a mental health evaluation — but there was never an evaluation on the court’s schedule.

She had told colleagues that after dropping the inmate off she was going to seek medical attention because she didn’t feel well, Singleton said.

Officer White, a 25-year veteran of the department, is in charge of coordinating all the transport from the detention to the court, so she knew she was violating the policy by transporting the inmate solo but probably wasn’t questioned by subordinates, Singleton said.

“I can tell you that every employee in this office is shocked,” he told reporters, describing department-wide “disbelief,”

The sheriff’s office realized she was missing after she wasn’t answering her phone and when calls to her went straight to voicemail.

Authorities are currently investigating if they two Whites has a prior relationship.

Regardless of her involvement, the Sheriff acknowledged she could very well be in danger.

I guess there is the slightest possibility he got a hold of and control of her and made her lie to get him out of there BUT it sounds like she was part of this and they don't deny the possibility. She knew the protocol and if she turned in her retirement papers a day prior, it sounds as if this was all figured/worked out ahead of time... And if that much was planned out then they also likely had other things planned ahead...? Meaning a way to travel, a place to stay, a destination, tickets, cash, or something.

A bit confusing that her car was found at 11 a.m. in a parking lot but it wasn't known they were missing until later in the afternoon... Was she given the benefit of the doubt for a few hours or something...?

Anyhow, why would she do this, a long term veteran and how could they have developed a relationship so meaningful that she would risk doing this? I mean does this jail allow a lot of one on one contact with prisoners? Did he leave in inmate clothing? Was he shackled? Are murderers housed with general offenders who can just be transported that easily? Sounds like even if she abused her position, they may not have the best practices and need to change them up some. Not a certainty but I'm just surprised it was that easy for her to either get to know him that closely or take him out that easily.

She chickened out and never showed up.) and they just mentally know how to manipulate someone. They can tell just by looking at someone who's vulnerable.

While being covered, a reporter asked a psychologist how these guys gain the trust of women corrections officers. They said that usually the prisoner will start with: "You know, if I had met someone like you twenty years ago I wouldn't be here." Then it's on to how pretty they look, talking about their husband's (This woman plotted to kill her husband before leaving the area. She chickened out and never showed up.) and they just mentally know how to manipulate someone. They can tell just by looking at someone who's vulnerable.

Oh I get it to a point but then again they are corrections officers and have been at it for how long and one would think have seen it all and be wise to such types. It has happened before and will again and I'm sure it is as you say hitting the right vulnerable person at the right time and maybe just someone that is at a certain point in life... And it isn't only women by the way... I was just thinking of a guy who lost his job falling for a female inmate, an old case, can't think of the name. I think both had their issues but yeah it happens...

The other side of it though is security and what goes on too. I can think of a case nearby to here where a jail officer could get alone with the female inmates (just county jail not prison) and he assaulted them. A pretty well known and I guess "respected" married guy and family man who would "never" do something like that. Oh no, never. It is a day and age where there should always be at least two present, well past that in fact... No? Or body cams, jail cameras in all nooks and crannies of the corridors, etc....

So yeah, I can believe it happens but I'm still a bit interested to hear the story here. Most county jails and courthouses aren't THAT big, did no one really pick up on anything between these two if that is what was going on...?

I've been reading up on this particular case. It's very fishy. Not sure yet if she was a willing participant in this or if he got the upper hand and had control over her. I'm on the fence on this one. Very strange tho

It's interesting enough to want to know the rest of it that's for sure. The part about her turning in her retirement papers makes me wonder; otherwise I might believe he had a weapon or knife on her or something and just got the upper hand the day this happened but more seems to indicate otherwise so far...

I almost think some of such cases are right up there with those who write to convicted murderers and then fall for them... Are there psych evals for those that take these jobs and annually? I mean seriously... I don't mean it in a snide way. Maybe something gets to them after a bit and no bleeding heart should be hired at the outset either. Imo. It would take a certain type to do these jobs.

Way back in the day I nailed the application and testing process and if I recall first interview for a job and good pay at a pretty big county's (for our area) public defender's office. I was young compared to now, probably late 20s maybe? The process and questions really made me think of if I had it in me to deal with what might walk into the office and I may have to deal with when alone and how I would handle it or if I could. I realized just with the questions and such that I wasn't sure I wanted the job or could do it good pay or not... In hindsight I couldn't have I don't think. I could now with all I've seen and dealt with in life since I think. And that's just talking being the type to work in such a job. And that's not in a jail....

I thought they train the corrections officers to look for the signs.

My guess is they have a very clear idea of whether she helped him or was "taken" involuntarily. Not saying so though also gives her the opening to try to think twice about what she is doing my guess is they hope. And that either way she may be in danger whether she feels so or not.

As to training officers one would think so but it wasn't so long ago in some counties they even hired cops who only had to know someone to be hired, same with deputies, etc. and not much else required... At least here it was some years back and perhaps still is in many ways...

Prisons I would hope do differently but who knows...
