Authorities in Oklahoma searching for missing 4-year-old girl
Authorities in Oklahoma are searching for a missing 4-year-old girl.

Officials said 4-year-old Athena Brownfield was last seen at a home in Caddo County.

The investigation began Tuesday at 2 p.m. when a postal carrier reported finding Athena's five-year-old sister near their home. The postal carrier reported the incident to the Cyril Police Department and authorities learned Athena was missing.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) has been called in by Cyril police to help with the search. The OSBI said a command post has been set up at Family Life Church in Cyril. Anyone wanting to volunteer is asked to check in at the command post and get instructions from the OSBI.

Caddo County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are also assisting.

Authorities are asking that anyone with a home or business in Cyril that has a video doorbell camera come to the Family Life Church and notify law enforcement.

Community members are also being encouraged to search their own property for Athena. For those wanting to assist in the search effort, visit the Command Post at Family Life Church.

The latest on the search for Athena Brownfield

New details in the investigation:
  • Athena allegedly has limited verbal skills.
  • She may have been missing since Friday, Jan. 6, according to flyers distributed by Cyril police.
  • The FBI is reportedly working with OSBI in the investigation, but is not physically present at the scene.
Athena Brownfield was reported missing Tuesday around 2 p.m. after her 5-year-old sister was found near their home at 225 Nebraska Ave by a postal carrier, according to OSBI. The carrier reported it to Cyril police, who requested assistance from OSBI.

Athena is about three feet tall and 45 pounds with light brown hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a pink butterfly sweater and pink pants, according to an Endangered Missing Advisory from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. OSBI confirmed she has limited verbal skills.

Initial reports set her age at three years old. While OSBI updated her age to 4 on Wednesday morning, OHP officials and flyers distributed by the Cyril Police Department continued to say she was 3 years old. The flyers also said Athena had allegedly been missing since Friday, Jan. 6.

7News crews saw Athena’s home on Nebraska Ave. being cordoned off with crime scene tape around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. The next morning, OSBI PIO Brook Arbeitman said the crime tape was not an indication of a crime, but rather a precaution to keep people out of the home.

OSBI is asking anyone with a doorbell or home camera to check it for Athena, and to search their own property. However, they ask people not to self-deploy in search efforts without checking in at their command post at Family Life Church.

Numerous law enforcement agencies, fire departments, volunteer organizations and search and rescue dogs are at the scene. 7News reporters confirmed with officials Wednesday that the FBI is working with OSBI on the case, but is not physically present.

A press conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday.

‘We need to find this little girl’: Search continues for missing 4-year-old Cyril girl

An urgent search is underway for a 4-year-old Cyril girl who was reported missing Tuesday afternoon.

Athena Brownfield was reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday from her home near the 200 block of West Nebraska in Cyril, which is southwest of Oklahoma City.

Authorities say a mail carrier called police to report an unattended child – Athena's 5-year-old sister – which led them to learn about the missing girl. The OSBI initially said Athena was 3 but has since said she is 4.

"This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and right now our top priority is locating her. And sorting out who’s responsible will come next. We need to find this little girl," said Brook Arbeitman, with the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. "She’s on her own in the elements. So, is that endangered? Yeah. But is she the victim of physical harm? That’s yet to be determined."

"The whole town has been out. We've also used dog teams and infrared," Lt. Michael Francis, with OSBI, said. "We're asking the community that if they want to come help to come to the Faith Church here in Cyril. That's where we're coordinating search efforts."

Investigators say they're in contact with Athena's parents.

The older sister, who did not need medical care, is now in protective custody with the State of Oklahoma, Arbeitman said.

[..]

The location of the girls' parents "remains under investigation," Arbeitman said. The beginning of the timeline begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday, she said, but the investigation into events continues.

[..]

Athena has limited verbal capacity, Arbeitman said.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) deployed its helicopter with infrared cameras to assist in the search, as well as watercraft and ATV-equipped search and rescue crews Tuesday and today. Arbeitman also credited all who are assisting the Cyril Police Department, OHP and OSBI: the Cyril Fire Department; Verden, Anadarko, Apache and Fletcher police; the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office and numerous volunteer organizations searching with rescue dogs.

CYRIL, Okla. (KSWO) - Athena Brownfield is still missing after the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation, the Cyril Police Department and members of the community spent the night searching for the young girl.

7News remained on the scene overnight and was on sight for a press conference with the OSBI Wednesday morning.

According to the OSBI, Athena was discovered missing on Tuesday after her 5-year-old sister was located by a mail carrier wandering near their home.

OSBI officials say they are in contact with the girl’s parents, but at this time they are more focused on finding Athena unharmed.

Crime scene tape was put around the girls’ home on Tuesday night after a search warrant was issued for the home, which OSBI officials say is part of normal procedure.

'Still very actively looking for her': OSBI issues update on missing 4-year-old Athena
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) provided additional information about the disappearance of four-year-old Athena Brownfield.

While there were not a lot of updates that the OSBI could provide at this time, they did say they had been gathering what they call "relevant items" throughout the process of searching for Athena.

"I'm not going to call them evidence, but we are finding things around town that could be helpful to this case," said OSBI PIO Brook Arbeitman.

Arbeitman says they are still working on piecing together an accurate timeline on the disappearance of Athena. What they know so far is that a postal worker found Athena's five-year-old sister wandering along the road by herself. It was after the postal worker reported Athena's sister that law enforcement also learned that Athena was missing.

While OSBI cannot confirm for certain how long Athena has been missing for, Arbeitman said they can confirm that Athena's sister did not require any medical care after she was found. OSBI says she is currently in the protective custody of the State.

So can we now assume that the parents were doing something with/to her while the other one was left unattended? Were they kids left alone for a few day while the parents were on a bender? I'm coming to these conclusions due to the wording of they are in contact with the parents, but "may have been missing since Friday".

LE is keeping any /all references regarding the parents close to the vest.

OSBI halts all trash pickup in Cyril during search for 4-year-old Athena Brownfield
The town of Cyril has halted all trash pickup while the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) continues their search for the missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield.

The latest in the investigation comes after the Oklahoma Highway Patrol concluded their grid search with local volunteers. The volunteers were released after searching the town of Cyril, including every vacant house and local waterways.

As of now, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has search dogs in the area and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs is flying their drones over the community.

Law enforcement is continuing to conduct interviews and review surveillance footage in an effort to locate Athena, who was reported missing on Tuesday by a postal worker.

The town of Cyril announced that OSBI has requested all trash pickup will be postponed until further notice amid the investigation into how Athena went missing.

A Facebook post that purportedly came from the girl's family alleges that Athena and her sister were under the care of family members who left them unsupervised before Athena's disappearance.

Even though the grid search has ended, the small town of Cyril is still looking to find Athena, while investigators are equally determined to locate Brownfield's parents or guardians.

Brownfield's grandmother said their father has not been in contact with the girls since the mother left with them more than a year ago, and she said she recently learned the girls were staying with a long distance relative instead.

"She abandoned her kids, she knew where I was," Brownfield's grandmother said.

Alyisa Adams was arrested at the Grady County Sheriff’s Office, according to OSBI, around 4:12 p.m. Thursday on two counts of child neglect. OSBI said the counts relate to Athena and her 5-year-old sister. Both girls were left in Adams’ husband’s care.

OSBI also confirmed Adams is the primary caregiver for both girls.

The 5-year-old was found walking around outside Adams’ house Monday on W Nebraska in Cyril. A postal carrier found the girl and notified police she was alone, OSBI said.

The agency confirmed the search for Athena is still ongoing.

“OSBI is following every tip that is received, which are coming in from Oklahoma, as well as other states,” the agency said Thursday.

Trash services in Cyril have been suspended while OSBI searches for Athena. Additionally, analysts are reviewing surveillance video around Cyril, and they are seeking other evidence that will help locate Athena.

This is so sad. Dad hasn't seen the kids in a year because mom took them and left. At some point mom decides she doesn't want them / can't take care of them either and gives them to these people to take care of. Who apparently also don't want them / can't take care of them. I wonder how much drug use is involved in this group. Poor kids deserve(d) better.
