Authorities in Oklahoma searching for missing 4-year-old girl
Authorities in Oklahoma are searching for a missing 4-year-old girl.

Officials said 4-year-old Athena Brownfield was last seen at a home in Caddo County.

The investigation began Tuesday at 2 p.m. when a postal carrier reported finding Athena's five-year-old sister near their home. The postal carrier reported the incident to the Cyril Police Department and authorities learned Athena was missing.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) has been called in by Cyril police to help with the search. The OSBI said a command post has been set up at Family Life Church in Cyril. Anyone wanting to volunteer is asked to check in at the command post and get instructions from the OSBI.

Caddo County Sheriff's Office and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol are also assisting.

Authorities are asking that anyone with a home or business in Cyril that has a video doorbell camera come to the Family Life Church and notify law enforcement.

Community members are also being encouraged to search their own property for Athena. For those wanting to assist in the search effort, visit the Command Post at Family Life Church.

Athena and her sister, according to court documents, had been living with Alysia and Ivon for up to 2 years and in that time had never been taken to a doctor appointment or enrolled in school.

Confirms my belief that both girls were not left alone and just the one sister was.

Ivon Adams left the home with Athena at about 1 a.m. Dec. 26 and later returned, saying he buried her body on land the Adams once owned close to the nearby town of Rush Springs, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southeast of Cyril, marking the site with “a large broken branch.”

Authorities have been searching that area and announced Tuesday they have recovered the remains of a child. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said it could not confirm the remains are those of Athena Brownfield.

"The remains will be transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Oklahoma City for positive identification," the agency said in a Facebook post.

GRADY COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) - The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) announced Tuesday that a child’s remains were found in rural Grady County outside of Rush Springs, Okla.

The OSBI said it cannot confirm that the remains are those of 4-year-old Athena Brownfield. The remains will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Oklahoma City for positive identification.

According to the affidavit, Alysia Adams confessed that she knew that Athena was dead.

Court documents show that Alysia Adams told investigators that around midnight on Christmas Day, Ivon Adams beat Athena and held her up by her arms.

The report states that Athena “was not moving and her eyes were barely open. He then laid her on the ground and punched her at least three more times in the chest. [Athena] never moved after that.”

The affidavit states that Ivon Adams told Alysia that he buried Athena’s body near a fence line that was near their old property in Grady County.

So far, Athena’s body has not been found.
WTF?! And you didn't do anything?! I bet she gets a deal for giving up the information. And deserves NOTHING!

Alysia, the girls’ caregiver, is facing two felony counts of child neglect: one for not watching Athena’s 5-year-old sister and another for not protecting 4-year-old Athena from her husband, who allegedly murdered the little girl.

The bond amount was set at $500,000 at the Caddo County Courthouse as Alysia faced her fate. If posted, a judge ruled Alysia would have to stay in Oklahoma, wear a GPS tracking device and can’t have any contact with witnesses, some of those who may be her own children.

The district attorney also mentioned the felony charges is facing could be upgraded or additional charges could be added.

The public defender in the case put in an application for a gag order, saying it’s impossible to have a fair trial with affidavits floating around social media. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation warned the public on Monday that social media rumors could “hinder progress.”

FLETCHER, Okla. (KOKH) — A semi-trailer containing refuse from the town of Cyril was recently searched for clues in the case of missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield.

The Fletcher Police Department said the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation requested their help in the search for Brownfield last Wednesday.

During the search, officers discovered a semi-trailer at the Multiple Community Services Authority Transfer Station containing refuse from the Town of Cyril. The truck's contents were picked up around the time Brownfield was initially reported missing on January 10.

An obituary for Athena Brownfield posted by Amy Stittsworth Funeral Services says the service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Stride Bank Center, located at 301 S. Independence Ave. in Enid.

State Sen. Roger Thompson will officiate the funeral. His office told KOCO 5 that he didn't want to comment but said he's honored to be at the ceremony.

The obituary says Athena loved to color and "Baby Shark," her favorite color was purple and she loved playing dress-up.

On Jan. 17, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officials announced that they found the remains of a child in rural Grady County near Rush Springs. They have not confirmed that the remains are those of Athena.

The remains were sent to the medical examiner's office for positive identification.

A judge also put a gag order on part of the case. The gag order, which was filed Thursday, says lawyers and law enforcement in Caddo County cannot talk about the case publicly.

"Gag orders are exceedingly rare, and they generally only occur in the most high profile of cases," attorney Ed Blau, with the Blau Law Firm, said. "Two examples are the Oklahoma City bombing and the Daniel Holtzclaw case."

Blau told KOCO 5 that a gag order on Athena's case is serious, saying public interest is a big reason.

"The most high profile of cases are the ones people see when they turn on the TV, turn on the radio or open up Facebook and Twitter," Blau said.

According to Blau, judges will issue gag orders if they feel they could impact a defendant's right to a fair trial. Athena's case is getting international attention, specifically on social media.

"If you see 15 posts from people you're friends with on Facebook all saying someone is guilty, it's hard to say that's not going to affect you on some level," Blau said.

The goal is to keep a jury as unbiased as possible.

"The reason why a judge does that is so when a case gets to a jury trial, hopefully not too many of the potential jurors would have heard so much about the case that they form an opinion about it," Blau said.

It also means the public won't hear from lawyers on either side. There also won't be information from counsel in this case or law enforcement in Caddo County.

A judge also considers a key question.

"Is this a case where the parties – defense or prosecution – might want to get out in front and make statements?" Blau said.

If a gag order isn't enough to get a jury set for trial, sometimes jury trials will be moved to another county.

"Many times, there's no other remedy other than to change the venue to a different county where there's a jury pool that isn't as tainted by information in the public," Blau said.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The body of a child found in Oklahoma earlier this month was positively identified as 4-year-old Athena Brownfield, who investigators said was beaten to death by a caregiver on Christmas.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation announced on social media Thursday that the state’s chief medical examiner had made the identification.
