Second arrest in case of missing child, 4; search continues

Oklahoma authorities searching for a 4-year-old girl say a second person has been arrested in connection with her disappearance. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said Friday that 36-year-old Ivon Adams was arrested in Arizona and is being held in the Maricopa County jail in Phoenix pending extradition. The bureau previously said 31-year-old caretaker Alysia Adams, Ivon Adams' wife, was arrested on charges of child neglect. The bureau says the arrests stem from the disappearance of Athena Brownfield. She was reported missing Tuesday in the Oklahoma community of Cyril. A postal carrier found Athena’s 5-year-old sister wandering alone near the caretaker's home and alerted police. They determined Athena was missing.

A caretaker of a missing 4-year-old Oklahoma girl has been accused of murder and child neglect, according to a court record filed in Arizona after his arrest.
Ivon Neil Adams III, 36, of Cyril, agreed Friday in his first court appearance to return to Oklahoma to fight the accusations.

"I want to get there and take care of it," he told a judge.

The search for Athena Brownfield began Tuesday afternoon after a postal carrier in Cyril discovered her 5-year-old sister wandering around outside and called police, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported.

On Friday, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation announced Adams' arrest as being in connection to the case of missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield of Cyril, a town southwest of Oklahoma City. Arrest records show he is being held in a Maricopa County jail. Adams is awaiting extradition to Oklahoma, the bureau said.

Evidence of the offense, according to court documents, was found on Adams' cellphone.

Authorities said Athena and her 5-year-old sister were in the care of Alysia and Ivon Adams.

The town of Cyril announced that OSBI has requested all trash pickup will be postponed until further notice amid the investigation into how Athena went missing.
She was reported missing from a "Postal Worker"?. Huh?. Halting trash pick up. This isn't going to end well. I hate to say that. It feels so ominous.

CYRIL, Okla. -
Hugs, prayers, and hope: Saturday night, community members gathered in Cyril to hold a candlelight vigil for Athena Brownfield.
The vigil took place downtown near Cyril City Hall. Speakers thanked the community for their efforts in trying to find her. They then prayed for the girl, who was reported missing on Tuesday.
"I loaded all four of my children up and I started going on the street with my vehicle and I said, 'Start saying Athena,'" recalled community member Brooke Kelley.

A neighbor told KFOR he saw an OSBI car in front of Athena’s home Sunday morning. That’s where Athena was living when she disappeared.

“I saw the vehicle over there. But I didn’t pay attention, I was on my way to church,” said Randy Ellis, Athena’s neighbor.

The home is also the home of the older sister, Adina, who walked out of and approached the postal worker on Tuesday which sparked the investigation into Athena’s disappearance.

Missing Athena Brownfield: authorities say search for 4-year-old Oklahoma girl is now a ‘recovery operation’

The search for four-year-old Athena Brownfield, who has been missing for nearly a week, is now being considered a "recovery operation," Oklahoma authorities said Monday.

According to the affidavit, Alysia Adams confessed that she knew that Athena was dead.

Court documents show that Alysia Adams told investigators that around midnight on Christmas Day, Ivon Adams beat Athena and held her up by her arms.

The report states that Athena “was not moving and her eyes were barely open. He then laid her on the ground and punched her at least three more times in the chest. [Athena] never moved after that.”

The affidavit states that Ivon Adams told Alysia that he buried Athena’s body near a fence line that was near their old property in Grady County.

So far, Athena’s body has not been found.
