Authorities seeking help finding Windsor couple missing since July 1

Avillage of Windsor couple has been missing since July 1 and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public help in finding them.

On Wednesday, a family member reported that Bart and Krista Halderson were last seen on July 1 at their home and that they had planned a trip to Langlade County for the weekend and the family has been unable to confirm if they arrived safely, Lt. Brenda Reinen said in a report.

Their personal vehicles are accounted for, so there is no known vehicle to associate with the couple, the Sheriff's Office said.

‘We’ll find them:’ Son of missing Windsor couple says parents were going to lake cabin, but no sign of them

The son of a missing Windsor couple said his parents planned to go with friends to the family's cabin by Sawyer Lake more than three hours away, but says there's no sign of them there and there's been no contact with them for days.

"We'll find them," Chandler Halderson said of his parents, Bart Halderson, 50, and Krista Halderson, 53. "It's better to not listen to the negative theories," he says.

The younger Halderson said his parents planned to travel to their property in the community of Hollister in Langlade County Friday to do some minor repairs on their cabin and carry out general maintenance. He says friends were going with them and driving the group, but says he does not know who their traveling companions were.

Halderson said he received a text from his mother after his parents had apparently left on the trip.

"She got back to me on Sunday, said they made it safely," Halderson said.

Halderson said he contacted authorities after his parents did not return as planned Tuesday, and after a relative went to Hollister and did not find them. Halderson said authorities in Langlade County also checked the property, but found the cabin locked. "The sheriff said it looked like there wasn't anyone home," Halderson said.

Chandler Halderson holds out hope the inability to locate or contact his parents is benign.

"They're maybe at a casino, their phones off, no reception. Maybe they're on a boat, having some fun with their friends," Halderson said.

I haven't had a chance to watch any of this but I have to wonder why he didn't just plead guilty. Are they just taking up the state's time and money with no real defense just in case, oh let's just go through a trial even with no real defense strategy because why not...?

So his dad already knew he had been lying so presumably both mom and dad did, so why did he kill them both? Was he so concerned of other people he had told finding out his lies? Or were they cutting him off and this way he thought he'd get their assets and money? My bet would be the money...? One dying wouldn't give him the assets, both had to go... In his warped and selfish mind... Just a guess.

Mitchell, his brother, testified last week and explained that he had lied to everyone for a long time. His brother mentioned there is a life insurance policy from their parents. It's approximately $1Million plus their properties but the insurance company hasn't paid it out yet.

Thanks for the info. Long time since I could watch much for trials or a replay of testimony much even and it will remain awhile. So I appreciate the info!

One mill. I would say that was his hope. Embarassment or having to work, find a job, etc. or explain to people might be an added reason but I'd guess the first was money.

It said in the one post that his dad was wondering why he always needed money... I'm sure one thing about to happen was no more money lent from mom and dad to pay his way...

This case is so sad. His own parents. I'm sure they probably were salt of the earth good but not perfect parents, none of us are.

His Dad was an accountant & Mom stayed at home until the boys got old enough then she got a job as a receptionist at a car company.

In looking at the case when I first came across this thread which was after I had been off for awhile so it wasn't when it happened, they looked like and souinded like just about any average probably middle aged Wisconsin couple. Camping with friends (he claimed), adult children, etc. I wasn't sure if there were siblings until you mentioned a brother. So he robbed at least one sibling of their parents as well. :(

Bart Halderson was shot 'at minimum' 3 times, twice in the back and once in the neck. The ME used the term 'at minimum' because only his torso was recovered.

Attorney's get more billable hours that way. They wouldn't get nearly as much if he just pleaded guilty and the case was done.

Does this "kid" have private attorneys? I'd just say that in Wisconsin public defenders I think (unless it has changed) are paid a statutory rate and it's not very much and in fact it used to be pretty low compared to most states. I get it with privately paid attorneys but this kid killed his folks because he was hiding the fact he had no job, wasn't going to school, etc. right? And life insurance it sounds like is hung up and not paid out (probably over this) so pretty sure he would have a public defender.

He is represented by 2 female public defenders. However, the case is on hold.

Per the Judge's order, court will pause & resume no earlier than next Tuesday, January 18th, 2022. He will provide each juror with a covid rapid test to take home as a precaution.
