Search continues for Carlee Russell: Woman vanished in Hoover after reporting child walking on I-459

Rewards totaling $25,000 are being offered as the search continued Friday for a woman missing after she told family she was checking on a child she said was walking alone along Interstate 459 in Hoover.

An anonymous donor has put up $20,000 for the safe return of 25-year-old Carlethia Nichole “Carlee” Russell, Hoover police said Friday afternoon. Additionally, Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000.

The search began Thursday night when Hoover 911 at 9:34 p.m. received a call from Russell, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

Hoover police have not received any other calls of someone missing a small child.

Authorities are not committing to any one theory in Russell’s disappearance, police said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

”We currently are investigating every possibility,’’ Lowe said. “We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.”

Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Russell is too old to be the subject of an Amber Alert, but her family is questioning why no Ashanti Alert was issued in this case.

An Ashanti Alert deals with critical missing adult cases and became a law in 2018.

1 year and $18,831 would be sort of Ok, with me. I'd like more, but the law is what it is. Make an example of her.
I agree. Give her the full year. Also make it where ma and pa can't pay the $18K, she has to herself over time. And no she can't sell the car or any other gravy ma and pa gave her to pay it.

This "woman" has not faced a THING. She has not come out herself in any way and apologized. She hides behind an attorney and ma and pa. Cops couldn't even question her, such a baby at 25 protected totally by her circle.

I don't know that I've ever been so disgusted in a long time over a NON case of a real victim where to listen to them CARLEE is the victim poor fragILE girl.

There is always justice though in ways we never hear about or know. Ma and Pa are stuck with what they've created for many years to come and she is just getting started...Just wait...

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC/Gray News) - A date has been set for when Carlee Russell’s jury trial will begin.

Russell is charged with two Class A misdemeanors for false reporting to law enforcement and falsely reporting an incident for what police described as a staged kidnapping in July.

Earlier this month, she appeared at a pretrial hearing in Hoover Municipal Court Wednesday, pleading not guilty to both counts.

Russell’s trial will begin on March 18, 2024.

Municipal Judge Brad Bishop said he believed if prosecutors put on evidence during the hearing, it would be enough to convict her and found her guilty of both counts.

Russell’s attorneys are now appealing this case to the circuit court.

Prosecutors have asked for Russell to serve a year in jail and pay $17,974.88 in restitution.

The Alabama legislature is also working on a bill that would create harsher penalties for someone who files a false police report and creates a lot of panic and fear.

That bill should be introduced when the next legislative session begins in February 2024.

Didn't know that I could get any more disgusted by her and her folks than I already was but I guess I was wrong.

Can't show her face or apologize but we are going to jury trial and playing the full game. I hope local LE and prosecution take it to that full end if necessary and don't let their b.s. force some deal. She will HAVE to show her face then won't she and explain a lot (not that she'd probably take the stand though or would she, Ms. Attention Seeker? Nah she doesn't show face when thoughts are negative on her and someone calls her out for probably the first time in her life. Ma and pa clearly never have.)

To LE etc. take it the full way if necessary. She/they think they are special and can strong arm you and put you in a corner to deal.

Can anyone tell me WHY she should not have o pay a mere $18K in restitution and spend a short year in local jail for what she did??!!! Apparently she and her family think that's just outrageous. Oh that's right, she has mental issues or is such a fragile girl. Uh-huh.

She makes me PHYSICALLY ill and then her parents make me want to vomit over the absolute enabling. They should welcome a year in jail and some learning for this one. They are stuck with her but who knows, they clearly have need of this dysfunctional b.s themselves.

I know I sound harsh but all she needed to do was fess up, give answers and apologize/face up to it for a majority to no hold this opinion and let itl go. Instead they fight what is a LIGHT sentence and a deserved one. They are and I mean it-- DISGUSTING as all get out.

Not anymore. ✏️ (Erase).

Omg. That should make the attention seeking queen's day.

She isn't in my searches and never has been.

I think there should be laws beyond minor or misdemeanors for what she did.

She is disgusting. If a minor teen I could cut some leeway but still bad but she is an adult. Well by definition anyhow.

Everybody knew Casey Anthony's name too.
Oh I agree. And didn't do a blip on their radar or conscience as they don't have one. Attention is attention after all. Might worry them if they actually truly lost their freedom but neither did or will. They might worry for a moment with charges IF they even do but the fact the world knows their names for bad reasons? Nah. Just like Casey this one will be back. Just wait. And not have changed a bit.

Very different crimes of course but same types.

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) -A Hoover woman who made national headlines for faking her own abduction is now expected to plead guilty.

According to court documents, a plea hearing was set Thursday for Carlethia “Carlee” Nichole Russell.

Russell will plead guilty Thursday, March 21 at 1 p.m. at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Bessemer. Circuit Judge David Carpenter will hear the case.

Previously, she was scheduled to stand trial March 18.

Russell faces one count of false reporting to law enforcement authorities and one count of falsely reporting an incident. Both charges are Class A misdemeanors

Well lo and behold. I'm sure ma and pa will have to repay some costs and she will get a slap and some community service if anything.

I doubt she has learned a thing and I doubt she will be or has been the one paying for any of it. I hope they at least give her some token jail time because to not do that is to enable this narcissistic self involved spoiled brat who had everyone worried a CHILD in a diaper was on the highway! And then if I recall had a party her parents let her have afterwards. Of course all worried for HER safety as well and to this day, no TRUTH about where she REALLY was or how she got there.

She didn't murder anyone but there are some you don't forget and I seriously doubt I will forget her name if she comes up again.

Head's up, I guess there's a hearing for Carlee Russell, the spoiled, selfish, lying brat who was lured by a poor nonexistent baby.

Watching pre coverage on the presser for Soto and viewers brought it up.

If I'm hearing it right, it was quick but a year of probation, no jail time (a joke), a $2,000 fine (a big JOKE for what she did and caused) and 200 hours I think of community service. I gather there is "some" video of it but who I am watching is on another case and he isn't sharing it yet. I could go look for it but want to hear the live on the other case. Just an f/y/I.

That girl cost tons more than that and I have little doubt it costs her parents more for a week of taking care of her and feeding her, clothing her, spoiling her and providing car and all else far more than this slap of a fine.

I have serious doubts this "girl" will turn into a stellar person but perhaps she will not pull another stunt like that one although other than public opinion, she hasn't had much for repercussions so who knows. Maybe she can just stick to manipulating parents and "friends" rather than LE and the public?

With all the heartbreaking real crime we see, she just really aggravates me. BEing young and not thinking and pulling a stunt is one thing to begin with but then CONTINUING it and adding and embellishing... Smdh.

An Alabama woman who lied about her kidnapping was ordered to pay nearly $18,000 in restitution and sentenced to probation during a court appearance on Thursday, ABC News has confirmed.

Carlee Russell was charged with two misdemeanors for making false statements to police in July. She told authorities she had been kidnapped after going missing for two days, then subsequently admitted to police through her attorney that there was no kidnapping and she made it up, the Hoover Police Department said. Her disappearance had sparked a nationwide search involving local and federal law enforcement, police said.

Russell pleaded not guilty in October to false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident. A municipal judge at that time found her guilty of the charges and recommended that she spend a year in jail and pay nearly $18,000 in restitution.

I heard $2,000 but it was when I wasn't expecting to hear her case (in another case's video) but maybe that was a fine. I'm glad it's more substantial, not that it will affect her, her parents will simply pay. The hours of community service I wasn't sure I caught in the quick statement but thought I heard 200.

So a municipal judge recommended jail but they gave her probation. She deserves a year in the county jail. Imo this is no effect or punishment at all for how bad this was. She continueddddd with the stories. And then they threw her a party. The parents maybe need jail time, they certainly need counseling and parenting skills.

I don't buy into or use many "terms" or names for things but ENABLING fits here and beyond. That word is apt. And I don't do the buzz words either like this but who can think of Carlee Russell and not have the word narcissist pop into their head.

I hope no one needed help in another neighborhood that died because all were frantically looking for a boy in a diaper on a highway and the missing heroine Carlee Russell.

She makes me sick. Grow up. Fat chance the way she is being raised (and she is TWENTY-FIVE) or was then.
