Search continues for Carlee Russell: Woman vanished in Hoover after reporting child walking on I-459

Rewards totaling $25,000 are being offered as the search continued Friday for a woman missing after she told family she was checking on a child she said was walking alone along Interstate 459 in Hoover.

An anonymous donor has put up $20,000 for the safe return of 25-year-old Carlethia Nichole “Carlee” Russell, Hoover police said Friday afternoon. Additionally, Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000.

The search began Thursday night when Hoover 911 at 9:34 p.m. received a call from Russell, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

Hoover police have not received any other calls of someone missing a small child.

Authorities are not committing to any one theory in Russell’s disappearance, police said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

”We currently are investigating every possibility,’’ Lowe said. “We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.”

Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Russell is too old to be the subject of an Amber Alert, but her family is questioning why no Ashanti Alert was issued in this case.

An Ashanti Alert deals with critical missing adult cases and became a law in 2018.

Hopefully this link works (BELOW). Video from I-459 at the time of her “abduction”.
I didn't realize how heavily trafficked this road is. I don't know why but I pictured in my head a smaller highway. Probably because of how the circumstances were described.
It was also VERY dark. It's 9:30 pm here right now with still enough light to see. (My area on the left, hers on the right). It didn't cross my mind how dark it would be there.

There is no child (or person at all) in sight walking. No other vehicle stops. I zoomed in, and she appears to exit the vehicle and walk around to the passenger side. Opens the door? Then I lose track of her.
Police arrive within minutes of her vehicle stopping.
I understand why they are/were so heavily searching RIGHT THERE.

It's also the video at this link if the Facebook one doesn't work.

Seeing the video makes this odd to me:

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

Not good with photos or videos and enlarging, enhancing, etc. and just don't have the time or patience to do, but in just watching it, I see nothing but her car on the side of the road and only really its lights. I assume its her with the flashers on anyhow.

Busy highway. Not sure I'd think someone would pull a hoax with a child out there. What some seem to think I read I think. Busy plus the person couldn't know who would stop, man, woman, cop, etc. And apparently there's a camera.

I guess she could have happened on something no one wanted interference in but again seems unlikely.

She also could have made this up or planned something but why?

Not really having an opinion yet as I guess nothing much is known. A sighting of a man leaning over into the car could be a perp or could be someone she was meeting.

Any thoughts? Anyone leaning a certain way?

Her car was found wasn't it? Was her purse, ID, money, phone, etc. in it?

I guess either a perp or he may not have known of a camera, etc. I can say honestly I'd never think of such as I was going down a highway. I don't think we have them and although they likely do in busier parts of the state, I still don't think I'd realize or notice them, plus it was dark but still there is footage... and a truck driver could see, etc.

Exactly. I don’t know what’s going on, but after seeing the video it’s pretty evident that she was not abducted after pulling over to check on a toddler.

I do wonder about that “tip”. Someone trying to be helpful or someone trying to be involved.

I also wonder about her mental health. Did she “see” a child? Did she wander off into the woods? Or did she have someone waiting for her at that exit that she looped around to meet and this was all just a ruse?

Mental health, drugs, alcohol. Could have been a deer or nothing.

Could also be a ruse.

Could also be a perp.

I'm not leaning hard in one direction but I don't think it's what we've been given to understand.

I think if we knew more about her and her life, we'd probably have a pretty good guess.

There was a prank my brothers pulled years ago along with my younger uncles who were about their age. Teens. They built a dummy, think like a scarecrow kind of. Made it look to be an adult person. They threw him in front of a car at night and the occupans thought they'd killed someone and when they realized what it was they were MAD. No police or anything but what happened next was not something I'm going to share. It has become a legend of a story as years have passed but it didn't end up too funny at the time.

I only share this as I saw somewhere, maybe even here in a link, can't recall that some think it may have been a ruse by a perp whether placing a child, thinking she saw a child, etc., getting someone to stop. Even with the event I recall from my childhood, I think that's the least likely scenario plus didn't she see a child running or some such?

She could have seen a deer or anything and yes could be hallucination, mental health, drugs, etc. But where is she?

It could also be she planned to lave but for some reason added an attention getting story. to her family or significant other or parents, etc. Wouldn't be the first time we've seen that. Wanting it to look as if kidnapped or some such.

Offhand idea, can you find daylight video off that camera? I'd like to see it lit up.

Couple of comments.

I had no idea from the night view how heavily wooded this is. She could have been dragged into the trees easily.

Also wonder if any of those homes have cameras. A car could easily park back there and the driver walk to the interstate.

One detail I'd like to know from the night she went missing. Was the carryout meal still in the car? I think she supposedly picked up dinner for her mother and herself but reports don't mention if it was found.

The video comes from Traffic Cam Archive, an online company that captures, catalogs, archives and sells traffic camera footage.

The footage shows what police confirm is Russell’s red Mercedes driving slowly on the shoulder lane of Interstate 459 in Hoover Thursday night with her flashers on.

“We have looked at the video,’’ Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis said Saturday. “It’s not the greatest.”

The chief said they are working to get the video enhanced for more clues into Russell’s disappearance.

“It proves that Carlee’s car was there, and we know that when the officers responded after the 911 call that she was not,’’ Derzis said.

“She remains missing and our top priority,’’ he said. “Every resource we have is being used today.”

“We’re working closely with the family making sure they know exactly what we’re doing,’’ Derzis said. “They’re fielding a lot of leads themselves and they’re forwarding those leads to us.”

Police on Saturday released a new photo of Russell that they said may more accurately depict her current appearance.

The reward for information in the case of the missing woman, Carlee Russell, has increased to $50,000.

Keller Williams Realty Inc. has committed an additional $25,000 for Russell's safe return. CrimeStoppers has put up a $5,000 reward, along with $20,000 from an anonymous donor.

I'm seriously hung up on that trucker.

Don't we see the police lights at the end of the video?

How did a trucker see that much detail and why was he paying such close attention? How did he know it was a male from his vantage point?

I could be way off base.

Yes, we see the entire incident. Based on the timeline, she would have called 911 as she was stopping her car or shortly after. And called her family member after she had stepped out of the vehicle. She would have screamed and dropped the phone during what we see in the video.

Maybe he saw another/different vehicle stopped not too far away from this area and confused the two? Maybe he saw another/different vehicle in this area but earlier than this incident? Or maybe he made the entire thing up. Some people like to make up sightings to pretend to be involved. Remember that little girl Sequoia - a neighbor reported seeing her walking that morning but she had been dead for weeks.

If she stopped her car because she had seen a child, why did she go immediately to the passenger side of her vehicle, open the door, and then stand there for a minute?
How did she see a child from that far away in the dark? She was driving slowly with her hazards on for quite a distance. (Some have suggested maybe she had taken the exit after passing the first time and made a loop to come back around a second time?)

All kinds of scenarios are playing In my head. If there was actually a child:
Child was bait. OR
Child gets scared as child sees car stop. Carlee opens passenger door so she can place child in her car or tell child to climb in. Child runs into wooded area to hide, Carlee starts into wooded area after the child, both fall down a ravine, embankment, etc. Phone picks up Carlee's scream as she falls.

It is Alabama. Does that part of the state have gators?

OR There was no child, it was a deer, a large stray dog, a possum, an armadillo, something instead.

OR It was not a child, but a short in stature man, one with a criminal record. Who had been released from AL, GA, MS, prisons in the last few months that had convictions for being a sex
predator or violence against women?

Was she followed from the restaurant or gas station when she picked up the food?

I do not believe there was a child. No children have been reported missing from the area, no other drivers reported seeing a child, no child is visible in the video. And someone looking to abduct a woman isn't going to set a child loose on an interstate hoping that a young woman traveling alone will be the one to stop. The number of chances of this going wrong far outweigh the chances of this going right.

Did she see something she thought was a child? An animal? I also find that hard to believe based on her unbelievably long drive-up on the shoulder. Again, unless it was her second pass-through. She would have been going too fast at highway speeds to see something like that, in the dark, and have time to approach it slowly on the shoulder. Even in the daylight, if you see something on the side of the road, you slam on your breaks and pull over, if you can.

A mental break / hallucination? Possible but unlikely, IMO. Her family and co-workers did not mention anything mental health concerns (not that they always do), but she seemed to have had a normal day and work and normal interactions around town.

So IMO, she either did NOT see anything at all, or she DID see or thought she saw something and exited the freeway to loop around and make a second pass at it.

Regardless, she stops.

Was there an adult person lying in wait? That's almost laughable, IMO. What a terrible place to wait to happen upon a victim. Was there an adult person who just happened to be where she stopped and had a crime of opportunity? Unlikely. Where would they take her in the 2 minutes before police arrived? Into the woods, okay. But then where? Into the neighborhood? I'm sure police are canvassing and combing through Ring and other camera footage.

Could she have started walking up the highway to look and been hit by a vehicle? Possible, but with that amount of traffic it seems someone would have noticed.

Did she decide to leave and make it look like an abduction? Possibly. But again, why call 911, knowing they'd likely respond fairly quickly. Why not just call that family member, let them hear the scream, and try to work things out from there? But, her trackable watch that she was wearing earlier in the day was left behind, as were her trackable Airpods and cell phone. She appeared to walk calmly to her passenger door, stand there for a bit, and walk off. Into the woods/neighborhood? To a waiting vehicle? Again, if she did this, police are canvassing and combing through Ring and other camera footage.

I'm not ruling out abduction... It's possible. I 100% believed it until I saw the video footage. I just find it so far-fetched at this point that I'm on the other side of the fence. It would be an immensely opportune crime. Maybe I'm also just hopeful if she did walk away on her own it would be the best chance for her to be found alive.
