Search continues for Carlee Russell: Woman vanished in Hoover after reporting child walking on I-459

Rewards totaling $25,000 are being offered as the search continued Friday for a woman missing after she told family she was checking on a child she said was walking alone along Interstate 459 in Hoover.

An anonymous donor has put up $20,000 for the safe return of 25-year-old Carlethia Nichole “Carlee” Russell, Hoover police said Friday afternoon. Additionally, Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000.

The search began Thursday night when Hoover 911 at 9:34 p.m. received a call from Russell, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

Hoover police have not received any other calls of someone missing a small child.

Authorities are not committing to any one theory in Russell’s disappearance, police said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

”We currently are investigating every possibility,’’ Lowe said. “We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.”

Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Russell is too old to be the subject of an Amber Alert, but her family is questioning why no Ashanti Alert was issued in this case.

An Ashanti Alert deals with critical missing adult cases and became a law in 2018.

Carlee Russell found alive, taken to UAB Hospital

WBRC has confirmed through Angela Harris that Carlee Russell has been found alive and taken to UAB Hospital.

Carlee Russell safe at home 2 days after claiming to see child on I-459 and vanishing

Carlee Russell, missing just over 48 hours, has been found safe.

The 25-year-old nursing student returned to her Hoover home shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday.

Paramedics and police were called after she reportedly showed up at the house she shares with her parents.

Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said Russell showed up at her parents house alone. She was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Where Russell has been for the last two days was not immediately clear.

I was just watching some stuff on it and under it some were claiming she was found. I searched and couldn't confirm. More hokey sounding stuff, a call from her, Red Roof Inn, etc. Which may have not been her. Not clear on that, haven't had time to watch it all.

I was going to comment after reading all posts here earlier that I also was leaning towards this not being what was said and her likely going missing on her own or with someone willing, especially after seeing the daytime pics of the area and such. But went and looked for updates first, etc.

Glad as he77 she is safe but not believing the story.

Is she a realtor or a nurse? Realty Agency put up reward money and call her their agent. Others says nurse or nursing student.

They found her wig, cell phone, purse and Apple watch nearby? As in NOT in her car?

She lives with mom but drives a Mercedes? Not saying couldn't be the case or anything about it, just pointing it out. And she is 25?

How old is the SIL? Since we have not heard a word of Carlee being married, I'm assuming it is someone not blood related married to her brother in which case is she about her age? Why did she call her rather than mom, her brother, etc.? Just curious. Not saying it means anything. Why did she break with 911 to begin or they let her go off the line yet she was still able to call the SIL?

Anything that could track her was found "nearby" as well as a wig...

She shows up at her own front door.

Sure sounds like more than a few others.

Glad she is safe but not believing much of any of it.

Lats night Ickedmel was on live and while I didn't watch it all or listen to it all, I did watch the chat for awhile and way too many people go right to mental illness. Drugs secondly. Etc. Excuses. Not saying either aren't problems but there is instant excuses with no hint of any such thing. Many still think she was abducted and sexually assaulted. The word trafficking was used many a time, also another one so many go right to. And some even still believe there really was a toddler.

Not saying any of it isn't possible but it sure as he77 isn't plausible.

She spent the hours and nights somewhere...And she either walked or had help and a place to stay/someone to transport her...

Earlier Saturday evening, police were dispatched to the Red Roof Inn on Montgomery Highway in Vestavia Hills.

According to police radio communications, family members of Russell showed up at the motel claiming they had received a call from her that she was there.

It did not immediately appear that Russell was found at that time.

What happened to Carlee Russell?

Hoover Police Chief Nicholas Derzis was light on details when announcing Russell was alive and safe after arriving at her family’s home late Saturday night, WBRC reported.

“She walked up, banged on the door, and that was her,” Derzis told reporters.

Russell was reportedly “dropped off at home and appeared to be in shock.”

Derzis said an investigation into what happened to Russell is ongoing.

“We work with facts,” Derzis continued. “With social media, you got so many people that think they know what’s taken place. Right now, we’re just very pleased that she’s home.”

The police chief said Russell would eventually be interviewed but for now there is relief she was found alive and safe.

“The first thing is to give Carlee and family a little time to get themselves back together,” Derzis said. “I know it’s been a tough experience for them. When we think it’s time to sit down and have a conversation with Carlee and try to get some facts, we’ll do that.”

Derzis emphasized to reporters that “the police department is very happy. We wanted her to come home safe and sound – and we’ll hope that’s what happened here. The investigation portion… we’ll get to, but to me the main deal is making sure that she got home safe with her family. And I couldn’t be more excited, and I hope the community feels the same way.”

Russell is reportedly being treated at a local hospital.

From what I read, her mom is a real estate agent with Keller Williams real estate company. The company put up a good chunk of the reward $$.

I am wondering if she was being stalked by an ex-BF who was following her on the highway.

Police say they will try to piece together what happened in the two days that she was missing.

It won’t be a quick process, Hoover police said, and the important thing is that Russell is home and safe.

“We deal in facts,’’ Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis said Sunday. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s our obligation as police to put it all together.”

“The goal now is to find out what happened in the 48 or 49 hours after she disappeared a mile from her house and then ended up back at the house, to fill in the gaps,’’ he said.

“We don’t have to move quickly,’’ the chief said. “Our priority was to get her home and she’s home. We’ll investigate and do what we have to do.”

Derzis said he doesn’t yet know how Russell got back to the Hoover subdivision, but that she walked up to the house and knocked on her parents’ door.

Police and fire medics quickly responded. Russell, who was said to be having difficulty breathing, was taken to UAB Hospital where she was held overnight for an evaluation, and then discharged early Sunday.

“Detectives responded to the residence and to UAB to take an initial statement from Carlee. The details of that statement are a part of the ongoing investigation which is expected to continue over the next few days,” a statement from police on Sunday read.

Investigators spoke briefly with Russell Saturday night but have not yet done any kind of in-depth interview with her.

“We’re respecting the privacy of Carlee and her family. Our main goal has been achieved and that is getting her home safe,’’ Derzis said.

“Our investigation now goes to the time on Thursday night when she called 911 and she’s gone to the point of her getting home last night,” the chief added.

“We’re going to find out exactly what took place,’’ Derzis said.

The Hoover Police Department has released new details regarding the safe return of Carlee Russell.

The press release reads the following:

The Hoover Police Department is releasing additional information on the safe return of Carlee Russell. Since the time of the 911 call at 9:34 PM on July 13, 2023 the Hoover Police Department has expended every available resource into locating Carlee, and we celebrate with the Russell family on her safe return at approximately 10:44 PM on July 15th. The following information are facts we have been able to determine at this point in the investigation. We are still gathering and evaluating evidence in this case.

Carlee left work from a business at The Summit in Birmingham at approximately 8:20 PM. She ordered food from a nearby business at The Colonnade and traveled there. We have worked to retrace all of her actions from the time she left The Colonnade until she called 911 and are well on our way to completing that task. At this point in the investigation, we have not been able to locate anyone with Carlee from the time she left The Colonnade until the 911 call was made.

Carlee communicated on her cell phone with individuals known to her while on her path of travel up to the point of calling 911 at 9:34 PM. The conversation with the 911 operator ended and Carlee called a relative. She went missing during that conversation sometime after 9:36 PM after telling both the 911 operator and the relative she had seen a male toddler in a diaper on the side of I-459 and was stopping to check on him. Traffic camera footage was obtained which depicted this portion of the incident, and that footage is still being analyzed as part of the investigation in conjunction with the 911 call to accurately determine the timeframe. Carlee’s 911 call remains the only timely report of a child on the interstate.

Hoover Police officers arrived on scene within five minutes of being dispatched, and several other officers arrived shortly behind. They located Carlee’s wig, cell phone and purse on the roadway near her vehicle, and Carlee’s Apple Watch was in her purse. Investigators with the Crimes Against Persons Unit were notified and the investigation immediately began in earnest with numerous leads being followed. Many local, state, and federal agencies immediately offered assistance and provided personnel and other resources to the investigation. No stone was left unturned and the investigation continued throughout the weekend.

At 10:44 PM on July 15th, the Hoover 911 center received a call from Carlee’s residence that she had returned home on foot. Hoover Police and Fire responded to the residence where Carlee was located. She was immediately transported by the Hoover Fire Department to UAB Hospital to be evaluated and was treated and released. Detectives responded to the residence and to UAB to take an initial statement from Carlee. The details of that statement are a part of the ongoing investigation which is expected to continue over the next few days. During the initial portion of the investigation detectives were able to retrace nearly all of Carlee’s steps until the point she went missing and are confident that will continue to be the case.

The Hoover Police Department continues to be extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the Hoover community and beyond, and all of the assistance provided by our law enforcement partners which are too numerous to name. We rejoice with the Russell family as they continue to rest and recover from this situation and ask for their wishes to be respected regarding their privacy. This release contains all the information the Hoover Police Department is able to release at this time. As we continue to investigate we will release information that is determined to be factual and pertinent to the public. When a press conference is scheduled we will provide advance notice of the date, time and location.

Yes, we see the entire incident. Based on the timeline, she would have called 911 as she was stopping her car or shortly after. And called her family member after she had stepped out of the vehicle. She would have screamed and dropped the phone during what we see in the video.

Maybe he saw another/different vehicle stopped not too far away from this area and confused the two? Maybe he saw another/different vehicle in this area but earlier than this incident? Or maybe he made the entire thing up. Some people like to make up sightings to pretend to be involved. Remember that little girl Sequoia - a neighbor reported seeing her walking that morning but she had been dead for weeks.

If she stopped her car because she had seen a child, why did she go immediately to the passenger side of her vehicle, open the door, and then stand there for a minute?
How did she see a child from that far away in the dark? She was driving slowly with her hazards on for quite a distance. (Some have suggested maybe she had taken the exit after passing the first time and made a loop to come back around a second time?)
There's a lot of confusion of who she called first. Just watched her brother's girlfriend first (so not a sister in law as reported and I thought too). The switched d over and called 911 and then returned to the call with the "sister in law". Doesn't sound to me like 911 was first but in the middle and only after "SIL" advised her to. WHO seeing a child on an INTERSTATE would not call 911 first? A TODDLER. This entire story is hokey.

All kinds of scenarios are playing In my head. If there was actually a child:
Child was bait. OR
Child gets scared as child sees car stop. Carlee opens passenger door so she can place child in her car or tell child to climb in. Child runs into wooded area to hide, Carlee starts into wooded area after the child, both fall down a ravine, embankment, etc. Phone picks up Carlee's scream as she falls.

It is Alabama. Does that part of the state have gators?

OR There was no child, it was a deer, a large stray dog, a possum, an armadillo, something instead.

OR It was not a child, but a short in stature man, one with a criminal record. Who had been released from AL, GA, MS, prisons in the last few months that had convictions for being a sex
predator or violence against women?

Was she followed from the restaurant or gas station when she picked up the food?
I thought of opening passenger door for child but I also thought of getting her stuff like wig, hat, etc Car was found running, didn't know that and now from what I understand hat, wig and phone were found outside car but Apple watch, purse and something else I forget, maybe Ipad, were found in the running vehicle which was unlocked.

However, I quickly and even immediately wondered as I always do. I doubted but wasn't sure there even was a child. Within little time I definitely did not believe so and thought as likely she did some elaborate ruse/story to leave of her own free will, etc.

The food she supposedly picked up that Roundpeg asked about has never been mentioned.

The truck driver who knows? Who did that come from anyhow? Pretty sure it was the news but did cops confirm it at all?

I haven't had much time and have heard and read past your post, know she appeared home, etc. So my response doesn't exactly fit your post as there was more news after it. I never did see the video close enough to see her go to the passenger side but take She's word on that and that made no sense except again to put a child in. However again I dont' believe there was any child.

Tonight I listened to this and he has dialed the police chatter and 911 down and taken out all the dead place and also added the recent Red Roof in stuff. It isn't very long but she asked the child like three times that the "SIL" could hear if he was okay. I'm thinking she timed the door opening on passenger side to coincide with the story in live time to align while talking to someone...? Child is never heard answering of course because there wasn't one...

This one.

He has shortened up the chatter and 911 but only leaving out the dead spaces, etc. It tells a fair amount.

From what I read, her mom is a real estate agent with Keller Williams real estate company. The company put up a good chunk of the reward $$.

I am wondering if she was being stalked by an ex-BF who was following her on the highway.
I have wondered about a recent ex or even a current bf. Not leaning that way, I think she did this, but it is the one thing that would explain it if not her imo. Hard to make fit entirely but totally possible I guess if he was the one the trucker saw IF the trucker really saw such.

I lean towards this was all her but not going to say she couldn't have had help and I think she may have.

If she was in danger and is even now for instance with an ex or such, they wouldn't be given her time to chill with her family and get over it and then meet with them so they can get some facts. There's been no arrest as far as we know so the ex is still loose... This looks like mainly her.

IF IT is mainly her, that would lead me to other thoughts such as did she feel too controlled by family, flunk an exam or lose a job, was she in some kind of legal trouble, etc. Or did she just want attention... I think we've seen such run the gamut...

There's a lot of confusion of who she called first. Just watched her brother's girlfriend first (so not a sister in law as reported and I thought too). All accounts so far have said that she called 911 at 9:34, hung up with them, and called brother's girlfriend. But from today's statement, "Carlee communicated on her cell phone with individuals known to her while on her path of travel up to the point of calling 911 at 9:34 PM." So I suppose it's possible she was already on the phone.

She also Tweeted right before her disappearance... At 8:56 she posted "someone to tell you “i love you” and don’t got a reason
🥹
" and then at 9:19 "yeah i want a family now
😭
" https://twitter.com/carleeenichole

The truck driver who knows? Who did that come from anyhow? Pretty sure it was the news but did cops confirm it at all?
Police chief Derzis told NPR that they have since disregarded that tip because traffic camera footage did not back up claims about the gray vehicle.

It's also standing out that law enforcement said that they would talk to Carlee "eventually" and figure out what happened. No mention of staying vigilant to your surroundings, no word about a possible missing or exploited child, no word about a potential danger to the community, no mention about avoiding stopping to help a child/animal/woman if you're traveling alone, etc.

Also, she was released from the hospital after what...maybe 12 hours? Her boyfriend stated that she was "fighting for her life" and "not physically and mentally stable" which does not match up to what we know.

I'm really not trying to disparage her without knowing all of the facts. And I continue to be extremely grateful that she was found alive. It's not often we get to see that outcome here. So I will try to patiently await more updates before further speculation.
