Search continues for Carlee Russell: Woman vanished in Hoover after reporting child walking on I-459

Rewards totaling $25,000 are being offered as the search continued Friday for a woman missing after she told family she was checking on a child she said was walking alone along Interstate 459 in Hoover.

An anonymous donor has put up $20,000 for the safe return of 25-year-old Carlethia Nichole “Carlee” Russell, Hoover police said Friday afternoon. Additionally, Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000.

The search began Thursday night when Hoover 911 at 9:34 p.m. received a call from Russell, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

Hoover police have not received any other calls of someone missing a small child.

Authorities are not committing to any one theory in Russell’s disappearance, police said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

”We currently are investigating every possibility,’’ Lowe said. “We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.”

Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Russell is too old to be the subject of an Amber Alert, but her family is questioning why no Ashanti Alert was issued in this case.

An Ashanti Alert deals with critical missing adult cases and became a law in 2018.

The Hoover Police Department has released new details regarding the safe return of Carlee Russell.

The press release reads the following:

The Hoover Police Department is releasing additional information on the safe return of Carlee Russell. Since the time of the 911 call at 9:34 PM on July 13, 2023 the Hoover Police Department has expended every available resource into locating Carlee, and we celebrate with the Russell family on her safe return at approximately 10:44 PM on July 15th. The following information are facts we have been able to determine at this point in the investigation. We are still gathering and evaluating evidence in this case.

Carlee left work from a business at The Summit in Birmingham at approximately 8:20 PM. She ordered food from a nearby business at The Colonnade and traveled there. We have worked to retrace all of her actions from the time she left The Colonnade until she called 911 and are well on our way to completing that task. At this point in the investigation, we have not been able to locate anyone with Carlee from the time she left The Colonnade until the 911 call was made.

Carlee communicated on her cell phone with individuals known to her while on her path of travel up to the point of calling 911 at 9:34 PM. The conversation with the 911 operator ended and Carlee called a relative. She went missing during that conversation sometime after 9:36 PM after telling both the 911 operator and the relative she had seen a male toddler in a diaper on the side of I-459 and was stopping to check on him. Traffic camera footage was obtained which depicted this portion of the incident, and that footage is still being analyzed as part of the investigation in conjunction with the 911 call to accurately determine the timeframe. Carlee’s 911 call remains the only timely report of a child on the interstate.

Hoover Police officers arrived on scene within five minutes of being dispatched, and several other officers arrived shortly behind. They located Carlee’s wig, cell phone and purse on the roadway near her vehicle, and Carlee’s Apple Watch was in her purse. Investigators with the Crimes Against Persons Unit were notified and the investigation immediately began in earnest with numerous leads being followed. Many local, state, and federal agencies immediately offered assistance and provided personnel and other resources to the investigation. No stone was left unturned and the investigation continued throughout the weekend.

At 10:44 PM on July 15th, the Hoover 911 center received a call from Carlee’s residence that she had returned home on foot. Hoover Police and Fire responded to the residence where Carlee was located. She was immediately transported by the Hoover Fire Department to UAB Hospital to be evaluated and was treated and released. Detectives responded to the residence and to UAB to take an initial statement from Carlee. The details of that statement are a part of the ongoing investigation which is expected to continue over the next few days. During the initial portion of the investigation detectives were able to retrace nearly all of Carlee’s steps until the point she went missing and are confident that will continue to be the case.

The Hoover Police Department continues to be extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from the Hoover community and beyond, and all of the assistance provided by our law enforcement partners which are too numerous to name. We rejoice with the Russell family as they continue to rest and recover from this situation and ask for their wishes to be respected regarding their privacy. This release contains all the information the Hoover Police Department is able to release at this time. As we continue to investigate we will release information that is determined to be factual and pertinent to the public. When a press conference is scheduled we will provide advance notice of the date, time and location.
I think I had seen all on here before tonight's responses by me except for this one. I look at the site on break while at work but don't respond and I only had two breaks today and none after the time this was posted.

There are a lot of hidden gems in here of what they don't say and the little they do so. I'm pretty convinced she pulled this but I'm not entirely sure anyone else didn't help or try to get her out of the mess she got herself into...

Of course there is no 100 percent and if she was taken or assaulted, I will be the first to change my opinion but this is all a carefully written thing of just that imo. I could pull out what I feel are important things from it but not sure if I'll get the time. I'm sure all others are picking up on the same parts, even though not outright obvious, pretty sure as to what they mean.

One is how they can follow her exact trail and inspect to have the rest corroborated etc. within a day or a couple or however they put it. Not a weeks long investigation but already know just a few short days to do so... Also the point of she was the only one to report a child on the interstate in a timely manner. That one is LOADED imo. I can take TWO things from that. And more.

It's also standing out that law enforcement said that they would talk to Carlee "eventually" and figure out what happened. No mention of staying vigilant to your surroundings, no word about a possible missing or exploited child, no word about a potential danger to the community, no mention about avoiding stopping to help a child/animal/woman if you're traveling alone, etc., just letting her and her family have some time... Very nice of them.

Also, she was released from the hospital after what...maybe 12 hours? Her boyfriend stated that she was "fighting for her life" and "not physically and mentally stable" which does not match up to what we know.

I'm really not trying to disparage her without knowing all of the facts. And I continue to be extremely grateful that she was found alive. It's not often we get to see that outcome here. So I will try to patiently await more updates before further speculation.
That's what I was trying to say basically about if she was in danger from an ex etc. and yes as you added, no mention to the community keeping an eye out, locking doors, worry about a child, etc.

So there is a boyfriend? Who said fighting for her life but miracle imo she was cleared 12 hours later...

I never mean any disparagement either. Once sure however, I do come down on what they did to others, cost LE and both family and the public concern and who run to assist and more and I do think there should be consequences.

On a wait and see. There have been so many through the years, some got some consequences, some never did at least that we knew of. There was that most recent one of the woman and her sister whose house was shot at, she'd been raped, etc., etc. and from day ONE in that one I thought it pretty out there with no explanation. What ended up happening? And most though the rape was fact and the issues at work with the guy, etc. Of course we've heard almost nothing since. I don't mean most here, I mean most in the public that heard of it when I say most thought by the way.

Others in the more recent past. The woman in Cali with a husband and kids and was "abducted" (not) and was really messing around with an ex boyfriend but showed up beat up, bruised, or whatever. She was called out and SHOWN to be all false but nothing further on it... Unbelievably her husband and parents were standing by her and making excuses for her or whatever. I could name older ones...

I think worse than anything here was getting LE and the public worried to death about a boy in a white t shirt and diaper on the INTERSTATE. No matter how this truns out, I will eat all my words if that was true.

More than $63,000 raised in Carlee Russell search being returned to donors

More than $60,000 raised in reward money for information that led to the safe return of Carlee Russell is being returned to donors.

A total of $63,378 was donated to Crime Stoppers of Central Alabama in the 48-plus hours the 25-year-old nursing student was missing.

Bob Copus, executive director of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama, said some of those donations have already been returned, and the rest are in the process of being refunded if that is what the donor requests.

“Hoover PD has informed us that they’re not requesting any payouts on this case,’’ Copus said.

I do not believe there was a child. No children have been reported missing from the area, no other drivers reported seeing a child, no child is visible in the video. And someone looking to abduct a woman isn't going to set a child loose on an interstate hoping that a young woman traveling alone will be the one to stop. The number of chances of this going wrong far outweigh the chances of this going right.

Did she see something she thought was a child? An animal? I also find that hard to believe based on her unbelievably long drive-up on the shoulder. Again, unless it was her second pass-through. She would have been going too fast at highway speeds to see something like that, in the dark, and have time to approach it slowly on the shoulder. Even in the daylight, if you see something on the side of the road, you slam on your breaks and pull over, if you can.

A mental break / hallucination? Possible but unlikely, IMO. Her family and co-workers did not mention anything mental health concerns (not that they always do), but she seemed to have had a normal day and work and normal interactions around town.

So IMO, she either did NOT see anything at all, or she DID see or thought she saw something and exited the freeway to loop around and make a second pass at it.

Regardless, she stops.

Was there an adult person lying in wait? That's almost laughable, IMO. What a terrible place to wait to happen upon a victim. Was there an adult person who just happened to be where she stopped and had a crime of opportunity? Unlikely. Where would they take her in the 2 minutes before police arrived? Into the woods, okay. But then where? Into the neighborhood? I'm sure police are canvassing and combing through Ring and other camera footage.

Could she have started walking up the highway to look and been hit by a vehicle? Possible, but with that amount of traffic it seems someone would have noticed.

Did she decide to leave and make it look like an abduction? Possibly. But again, why call 911, knowing they'd likely respond fairly quickly. Why not just call that family member, let them hear the scream, and try to work things out from there? But, her trackable watch that she was wearing earlier in the day was left behind, as were her trackable Airpods and cell phone. She appeared to walk calmly to her passenger door, stand there for a bit, and walk off. Into the woods/neighborhood? To a waiting vehicle? Again, if she did this, police are canvassing and combing through Ring and other camera footage.

I'm not ruling out abduction... It's possible. I 100% believed it until I saw the video footage. I just find it so far-fetched at this point that I'm on the other side of the fence. It would be an immensely opportune crime. Maybe I'm also just hopeful if she did walk away on her own it would be the best chance for her to be found alive.
Just got the chance to look at this. Is our theory that she intentionally walked away and made it look like an accident? I didn't even think if that but it's recent so I haven't thought of much. We saw her get in a car on video?

Oh wait - I didn't even catch that she's okay. Thank god. But I'm so confused, can I get a brief summary of what on earth we thought that was about?

Unanswered questions linger in Carlee Russell's mysterious disappearance and return, police investigation ongoing
There are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the disappearance of 25-year-old Carlee Russell, who returned home to her parent's house in Hoover Saturday night.

On Monday, Hoover Police had no new information to release, as their investigation is ongoing. Monday evening, police recapped what they know in their investigation so far.

Police have spoken to Russell once and are following up on that information, however aren't able to publicly share the details from the initial interview. Hoover police plan to follow up with her again to attempt to get a better understanding of what happened and said they will provide information when they are able to do so.

"Each piece of information is helping investigators reconstruct Carlee’s movements during the time she was missing. This is a tedious process, but it is important to make sure everything is methodically evaluated so that we have the clearest possible picture of what took place from the time Carlee called 911 until she returned home Saturday night," a news release from Hoover Police Department read, which was sent out Monday evening.

Police ‘methodically’ combing through evidence after Carlee Russell returns home

Hoover police are "combing through numerous pieces of evidence" in the disappearance of "Carlee" Nichole Russell after she was returned home alive and safe Saturday night.

Crime Stoppers now says $63,000 raised in Carlee Russell search not being refunded

On Monday morning, the organization said they would refund $63,378 donated in the 48-plus hours the 25-year-old nursing student was missing.

However, on Monday afternoon, they announced that was no longer the case.

“This investigation is still ongoing, and accordingly, there is no basis to refund any contributions at this time. Furthermore, the Hoover Police Department has not requested for any donor contributions to be released or refunded,” the afternoon announcement stated.

Oh wait - I didn't even catch that she's okay. Thank god. But I'm so confused, can I get a brief summary of what on earth we thought that was about?
We don't really know. We just kind of saw her car along the interstate and she poofed.

I'm still wondering about the trucker. I'm also still wondering about the treeline. A car could have been on the other side.

Nothing makes sense right now.

Although they are sure not coming forward with the facts of this so far, this says quite a bit to me. I mean they could keep a reward for anyone with info on who her abductor is, his whereabouts, etc. couldn't they? Also, this news sure was issued fast. They could also keep it in force for tips on anyone who can help them on locating the child. I have little doubt most donors would want this if in fact they thought there was a child or a crime.

While it isn't being said, I think an educated guess tells us the reasons for this. I guess they can claim it is simply because she has been "found" and is safe but they didn't say that...

A car with a person in it who put a child out as bait on the interstate? I'm sorry but I can't make that work. And let's say the trucker was involved, again how does the child work and her phone calls about a child?

There is one possibility that I don't think any of us thought of and that is that someone was in the car with her. Also possible someone threatened her by phone or in person in the car and made her make the phone call. Do I believe this? NO.

News of refunding the reward money and then a stop put to it. Guessing she is still lying and they need to prove whatever fantastical tale now is not true and couldn't be true.

So this is costing more time, effort and $$ for what I consider to be likely a totally bogus story.

That she was making calls and talking to people right up to this stands out to me..

Just watch, next she will be lawyered up. And that they need to treat her with kid gloves is ridiculous.

This is not at you of course. Just voicing my thoughts.

I could be wrong of course but I think we have someone creating drama here. The reasons for it could vary though.

Concern about her was one thing but do you know how most LE and people feel hearing a young child/toddler in a diaper is on his own on the interstate at NIGHT no less?

Not a bit of this makes sense unless some perp baited not only her but anyone who would notice with a toddler on the interstate. The perp couldn't know who would stop, come back, loop around or if anyone would at all but if anyone did, who it would be. The trucker? A cop? Two elderly females driving home from bingo? OR there was no child.AND no perp using a child.

Who knows but it just can't be made to add up.

Maybe the trucker is a friend or there was no trucker but a friend put up to claiming such... She was hot on the phone to people prior to even "seeing" this or so it sounds...

Parents Of Carlee Russell Say Police Are Pursuing ‘Her Abductor’ After Disappearance

The parents of Carlee Russell, the 25-year-old Alabama woman who mysteriously disappeared for over 48 hours last week before returning home, said their daughter was abducted by someone they believe is still at large.

“We tried to hug her as best we could, but I had to stand back because she was not in a good state. So we had to stand back and let medical professionals work with her,” her mother Talitha Russell said in an interview with NBC News that aired on Tuesday. She did not specify in what way her daughter was “not in a good state.”

While police have gathered enough evidence to trace Carlee Russell’s steps until the moment she disappeared, the 48 hours she was gone are still a mystery. The woman’s parents declined to share what their daughter told them upon returning, citing an ongoing investigation, but said that their daughter was abducted.

“Carlee has given detectives her statement, so that they can continue to pursue her abductor,” Talitha Russell read from a statement to the public. The Russells also said they “absolutely” believe their daughter’s abductor is still at large.

Hoover police did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request to confirm whether they are looking for an abductor in Carlee Russell’s case.

Despite the Russells not disclosing details about their daughter’s experience, they stressed that she “definitely fought for her life.”

“There were moments where she physically fought for her life, and there were moments when she had to mentally fight for her life,” Carlee Russell’s mom said. “She made it back."

Release from Carlee's employer below. Interesting - "We've been working with the Hoover Police Department since Friday morning, the morning following Carlee's disappearance, in order to come up with any information that would help the investigation. Everything we uncovered is in the [possession] of the Hoover Policee Department."

Newest statement from Carlee's family:

You can read Robinson-Russell's full statement below.
On behalf of Carlee Russell and her family we first want to sincerely acknowledge and thank everyone for all your prayers, reward contributions through CrimeStoppers, and all the numerous acts of kindness shown to us. We asked God to perform and He did. We understand and appreciate the sincere concern, however, we would like the public to understand a few things. First and foremost Carlee's physical and mental well being is our immediate concern. This has been a traumatic experience for Carlee and secondly for our family.
Secondly, this is an outstanding investigation and we have fully cooperated with authorities from the onset and will continue to so.
Carlee has given detectives her statement and hopefully they are pursuing her abductor. It will be up to law enforcement to determine what information they want to release and when they want to release this information as to not compromise the investigation.
Further we understand there are some questions about the reward donations through CrimeStoppers. It is my understanding from information I received when the reward was set up that any donations received that were not used for the reward would be returned to each donor.
Lastly, when we initially asked for the help of the public in searching and praying for Carlee's safe return we asked for sincere prayers not prayers or support that came with strings or entitlement.
We have not created nor authorized any Gofundme accounts nor solicited money from anyone.
Please understand our mental state and the anguish we have just experienced and that Carlee is still dealing with and understand that no matter how many demands or false narratives that are produced we will not be bullied into doing anything that will compromise our daughters mental well being or the investigation.
Also, we will not entertain the negative social media comments with a response so you find someone to do it. God has been too good to us and brought our daughter safely home and we will not participate in allowing this moment to be tainted.
There is one terrible and heartless hoax we want to address out of several. I received a text at some point from someone claiming to be Carlee and that she was at the Red Roof Inn. However, when my family went there and knocked doors and looked for her and there was no indication Carlee was there nor that she had ever been there. Any further questions or comments about the case will need to be directed to Hoover Police or the ABI.

Hmm. Neither the employer's statement or the family's says anything to me. Carefully written with not a bit of real information. They certainly swayed me not at all.

The one thing that stood out to me from mom is "hopefully they are pursuing her abductor". Not we've been assured LE is pursuing her abductor.

Honestly I think this says a lot more to the dishonesty of Carlee than it does help her.

NOT A SINGLE WORD about if this poor little boy is SAFE. Just ignored it. Meaning imo it isn't true and never was but the abductor was? Let me guess he made her call and give the toddler story before she was EVEN out of her car or had disappeared? WOW.

NOTHING HERE FITS. NOT a single thing fits together.

Another thing I think it shows is quite a bit about the family dynamic.

Of course I could be wrong and she could have had an ex or someone after her but I don't see how or how that relates to some toddler on an interstate in a diaper.

If she is so mentally fragile, why isn't she still in hospital etc.

Personally I think we are dealing with a drama queen. Or a 20 something with a teenage mind that thought something made up like this would get her out of trouble or help with this or that OR get someone else worried, etc.

I have absolutely no problem apologizing if I am wrong. And her parents really buy it all hook, line and sinker? Not so sure of that... Maybe they do and maybe they don't. Or is it just mom? We know also a brother with a gf that they call a SIL. I wish they'd quit doing that kind of stuff--news I mean.

Hoover Police release new details in Carlee Russell investigation, call press conference for Wednesday afternoon

Among the new details, police say after leaving the Colonnade Thursday, she went to Target on Highway 280 and purchased snack food that wasn’t found in her car when they found it on the side of Interstate 459.

Police also say they have found no evidence of a toddler walking down the interstate.

We’re told surveillance video from Carlee’s neighborhood shows her walking alone down a sidewalk before getting to her home.

Police also say when first responders arrived at her home, she was conscious and speaking to them when they arrived.

Hoover PD says they are waiting for a chance to get a second interview with Carlee.

New key info in the Tweet below:

They discovered she bought snacks at Target that were not found in the car.
No evidence of any toddler found to this point.
Presser tomorrow afternoon.

It's been obvious since she showed up at home and really pretty much pointed to it before. But then she and with getting her family on board are trying to save her from her lies.

You do need those snacks if you are going to go missing for a few days and cause an uproar. Something has to sustain ya.

The PD said what they said here if you ask me because the Carlee via her family and it seems even her employer to a point is trying to save her but even they are very careful in what they say. but want to show support or if you ask me were talked into doing so by her. This says plenty without "saying" it. There is NO CHILD. There ARE snacks she bothered to take with her as she desperately went to search for the toddler and was abducted. Yeah RIGHT. NOT.

The gal needs work on what is believable and not far fetched. And family very gullible including the "SIL" assuming the "SIL" knew nothing about her plans... I keep thinking of how they said she was quite active on her phone up to the point of seeing this child...

It is pretty stupid she and the family are continuing this. She won't get much more than a slap on the wrist and admonishment imo and even though people aren't going to think too highly of her, it will fade and the next such type will make the news.

Yes, I'm outright saying it and the cops I think wish they could. Clearly there was no mental health crisis, her mom goes on about the physical and mental stress and efforts she had to use to fight or leave her abductor, etc. not a hint of that in the LE statement, just hints of this gal was just fine and her main concern was having enough SNACKS and even ensuring she took them with her as she was so panicked over a toddler in a diaper and then screamed and was never heard from again. Until she showed up at home. Smh.

I'm not convinced either the Red Roof Inn thing was some stranger from the internet and not her or someone she put up to it.

You leave personal items in your car, important ones to most people, leave it running, take your hat and wig and snacks and then lose the hat and wig (staged) but man you've still got those Twinkies and Snicker bars.

Yeah no surprise is it. Not talking to them and got mom and employer out there as sound pieces to a point and really thinks she can play this still to get out of it. Imo.

How is it police were per her mom to be looking for her abductor when she herself has barely talked to them. And yet go figure they know a lot including most of her steps and no doubt have found almost all.

Well she got attention if that is what she was seeking. And like most didn't end up some heroine who herself was assaulted while trying to save a toddler.

Police aren't looking for any toddler and they're not looking for any abductor. They are however looking for junk food garbage or sorry, snack food garbage and have found none. The case of the found wig, the found cell phone, purse, hat, Apple Watch but of the MISSING SNACK FOOD.

Sorry for the snark. People who play on children in danger, lie for their own purposes intentionally involving LE resources, etc. P*SS me off.
