Search continues for Carlee Russell: Woman vanished in Hoover after reporting child walking on I-459

Rewards totaling $25,000 are being offered as the search continued Friday for a woman missing after she told family she was checking on a child she said was walking alone along Interstate 459 in Hoover.

An anonymous donor has put up $20,000 for the safe return of 25-year-old Carlethia Nichole “Carlee” Russell, Hoover police said Friday afternoon. Additionally, Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000.

The search began Thursday night when Hoover 911 at 9:34 p.m. received a call from Russell, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

Hoover police have not received any other calls of someone missing a small child.

Authorities are not committing to any one theory in Russell’s disappearance, police said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

”We currently are investigating every possibility,’’ Lowe said. “We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.”

Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Russell is too old to be the subject of an Amber Alert, but her family is questioning why no Ashanti Alert was issued in this case.

An Ashanti Alert deals with critical missing adult cases and became a law in 2018.

Police: Carlee Russell was not abducted, charges could be pending

Days after a woman went missing and was found safe, Carlee Russell has admitted that she was not kidnapped, police report.

During a press conference Monday afternoon, Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis read a statement from Emory Anthony, Russell’s attorney, claiming that the 25-year-old woman was not abducted the night of July 13–as she and her family had previously reported– and that she had not seen a child walking along I-459 the night she disappeared.

Derzis read the following statement from Russell that was provided to the Hoover Police Department from Emory Anthony:

“My client has given me permission to make the following statement on her behalf. There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have help in this incident, that this was a single act done by herself. My client was not with anyone or any hotel with anyone from the time she was missing. My client apologizes for her actions to this community, the volunteers who were searching for her, to the Hoover Police Department and other agencies as well as to her friends and family. We ask for your prayers for Carlee as she addresses her issues and attempts to move forward, understanding that she made a mistake in this matter. Carlee, again, asks for your forgiveness and prayers.”

Derzis said police would be meeting with Anthony and that charges would be announced when and if they were filed. No motive for Russell’s false abduction report were revealed.

Derzis ended the press conference by saying that Russell’s admission would not alter their ongoing investigation into her whereabouts the night she claimed to have been kidnapped.

Smart of her to come clean. I'm glad she chose to fess up.

Hardly a surprise and she'd have continued it if not caught in it. And if she was seriously sorry, she'd be providing police with her whereabouts. That leads me to believe there very well may have been someone else involved. Where did she go, stay and how did she get there?

I think it's a self serving statement. Also apparently mommy ponied up a lawyer for her. Deal with her issues. What issues?

She made this bed and kudos to LE for saying they will continue to investigate as to where she was as they should. And she is leaving them to have to do that as she did not share it so they could simply corroborate it. So she continues to cost time and money.

I'm glad she 'fessed up I guess but I sure didn't need it and I don't think the cops did either. There isn't one thing in it not already known. I'm sure the reaction from work didn't help. At least work after supporting her, turned as they should and gave her consequences. Her mother won't do the same, instead she'll keep paying the lawyer to get her out of her own mess.

Any truth to the pregnancy rumors and remarks... Maybe she needed two days away from control of her every move and family tracking app. Even if so, a fake child on the interstate didn't need to be added.

The story and how easy it was to see through (let's not forget snacks and web searches if there was doubt before that) shows she is not the brightest nor very logical. I'm sorry but I don't think she's fit to be a nurse, she isn't even fit to be a spa employee. She's dishonest and she steals.

She's a spoiled entitled brat and I don't think she's even remorseful, she just wants to get out of any trouble. TELL the cops where you were Carlee. Otherwise your statement means nothing.

So she had a party Sunday. Just for starters.

I'm also not buying that she wasn't picked up and/or more by someone.

This case is coming up right alongside Gilgo on YT and I think that's disgusting. One case has real victims and the other has a selfish brat who manufactured two victims, a nonexistent little boy and Carlee HERSELF.

By the way her "followers" have been increasing on SM.

This case deserves attention if only to see she gets charged. LE has every intent of seeing it through and determining where she was and they SHOULD and imo they are entirely unaffected by her "apology" as I also believe they should be. That apology is self serving and I don't believe she has any remorse except maybe for herself but at the same time is probably watching her followers grow.

I also have a real problem of her invoking God in asking for forgiveness. That's just another play on people and she has no right to use Him when not remorseful or giving LE the truth and info as to where she was. I don't know how anyone can see her statement as anything other than self serving because of what it lacks, the key information LE still gets to work on because of it. They can't just go corroborate or disprove where she says she was because she won't say. That's a big TELL imo.

Plunder walks a line sometimes of not being sensational really but coming close but playing it as what if and what do you think, etc. In a case like this that is sensational, I guess she's a good one for looking at all the possibilities and I'll give her this, she gets the info, she is also a document person who gets the 911 calls and other things, grabs social media content and secures it before taken down in some cases, etc. And she does often have things no one else does.

There is info in here I hadn't heard, like about the party, like about a neighbor calling about some stranger in the neighborhood, probably Daily Mail maybe, and more of that kind of thing. Police logs.

It's interesting in the way People Magazine would be, not my cup of tea generally but then this case is THAT kind of case. However, it is also the truth of things.

It leaves a nasty taste in my mouth to even give "Carlee's case" any of the little time I have but when people like her do things like this they have to have consequences and be called out imo. But that very calling out gives her attention even if negative.

This letter was not an apology. It was an attempt to use God to induce people to forgive her because after all, if you don't, you aren't doing as God would want and also to let her work on her "issues" and there's the excuse. There is no "coming clean" she says nothing at all except what we all already suspected and police implied and almost outright said.

I think there's one bit of trtuth hidden in her story and how she got "free" and made a beeline for her home and neighborhood and came out right there contains it. Yeah, that's where she was dropped off conveniently OR she was staying somewhere not that far away where she knew the route home. It was one of many of the most fantastical parts of her story, how she got free and walked or ran (?lol) and magically came out at home. I also really liked the captors feeding her cheese cracker as that's what she bought... She is no brainiac.

Anyhow, it isn't worth following in one sense but it is because just as LE is doing, aside from the attention grabbing story she made up and all the things she pulled on people, consequences are deserved and need to be shown. Rest assured she won't have any real ones from her enabling parents. But they might just let her have a party or help throw her one. And come to her defense touting her false story and all she went through.

Well in finally seeing the press conference, I want to give some credit to the fact we could hear every reporter's question. it is so the norm in press conferences that one can hear the speaker at the podium but not the question asked. This was excellent and the reporters clearly on microphone or coming up to one. They also asked they identify their channel affiliation, etc. and one could hear that on each.

I just rarely take time out to give credit and think it deserved here. All PCs should be like that instead of tryign to figure out from the spaker's answer just what the question actually was.

What stands out to me? That this statement does nothing to change the course of investigation and I don't think they are impressed. They were to meet with Carlee and instead got this email and statement. That regardless, they are going to pursue here whereabouts.

I also found the question about the parents most interesting as I have had some thoughts very similar and the LE guy doesn't say no to it or that such a possibility is closed out.

Plunder is also worth a watch. She compares her towards the end to the spoiled bratty girl in Willy Wonka. I think it's fitting personally. And that's based on all the SM etc. that was shared and her ruse and her behavior since and more. Not just jumping to that thought. The type that stomps her feet if she doesn't get what she wants.

Of course Plunder balances with that with will this make her grow up, hopefully it does, mature, etc.

Fat chance imo. Not with the help and enabling she apparently has going on. Also, she is not good nurse material. When she forgets to take care of a patient or gives some eldery guy the wrong med resulting in death, she will likely cover it up and then will probably claim that he attacked her then went running out the door, straight down the hall and then down the interstate on a straight path at a rapid clip never veering.

I'm sorry for the sarcasm and snideness but I'm not. The ones in this case that are doing as they should as far as I can see are LE and I also give the employer credit on canning her arse and making the kind of statement she deserves. Of course it is in their best interest with the trouble and damage she caused them but they did so and didn't hesitate to call her on it. Carlee herself, her parents and their reactions along with retaining an attorney? No. And failure to give her whereabouts to LE? No. There's no effort to take accountability there. None. There's an effort to avoid it and minimize it.

I think too I need to stop saying her name. Even just a first name, there is probably some internet counter she's watching. Lol but not.

Carlee Russell charged in connection with kidnapping hoax

Carlee Russell, the Alabama nursing student who claimed she was kidnapped for 49 hours in a stunt she later confessed was a lie, was charged with two misdemeanors in connection with the hoax, police announced Friday.

The arrest warrant was issued earlier today, Hoover Police Chief Nicholas C. Derzis said in a news conference.

She surrendered to authorities, accompanied by her attorney, at the Hoover City Jail to face two misdemeanor charges: false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident, he said.

The charges carried a bond of $1,000 each and are punishable by up to a year in jail and a $6,000 fine if convicted, the chief said. Russell was released from jail after posting bond.

“Her decisions that night created panic and alarm for the citizens of our city and even across the nation as concern grew that a kidnapper was on the loose using a small child as bait," Derzis said. "The story opened wounds for families whose loved ones really were victims of kidnappings, some of which even helped organize searches.”

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said “we intend to fully prosecute this case,” adding his office will monitor the investigation for potential further charges.

Marshall said while Russell wasn't kidnapped, they "don’t see this as a victimless crime," pointing to the "significant hours spent" and "resources expended" in the frantic search for her.

Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, said Friday: “All we can do now is wait for the court date and see how we go from there.”

Smiling ? Really! No look of remorse or shame. Not one bit surprised.

I didn't even have to get to the part about bond before I knew in my mind her parents would immediately bail her out and BINGO.

Fairly minor charges but then what is there. I think another fitting punishment would be for nursing school to kick her out. Anyone who showed such little lack of concern for others should NOT be around patients. Probably failing anyhow.

No lesson at all being taught to her by her parents apparently. She clearly never learned any as a minor and that seems to continue.

I'm sorry but I'm not. It's how I see it.

For goodness sake, she was having a party at their home after this all happened.

Good on LE though. However, she looks not one bit concerned. No shame at all.

She disgusts me.

I'm looking for signs of her "issues" she has to deal with... Fake ass letter too. Has she come clean as to where she was yet and who helped? I bet not.

Police: Carlee Russell was not abducted, charges could be pending

Derzis read the following statement from Russell that was provided to the Hoover Police Department from Emory Anthony:

“My client has given me permission to make the following statement on her behalf. There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have help in this incident, that this was a single act done by herself.

Charge her and make her pay what they did for resources finding her. Tag the completely self-centered, Absorbed, Little b****!!!. Unbelievable. When people are actually abducted and go missing due to suspicious circumstances. Wasting resources on her. When there could be an actual missing person you're not working 100% on because of her B.S.

WORSE than her, a little boy in a diaper on an interstate! THAT and then HER going missing is what attention grabbed!

They can make her pay but mommy will just pay it ya know. That much is SOOOO clear in this case. She, ya know, has issue I guess. YEAH they're right on that one. She DOES. Spoiled rotten brat who cares less about others.

She lost her job but i somehow doubt she cares. Now she can lay on the couch with her extra cell phone and eat what was it, Cheez Its and something? Uh huh. Maybe order in some pizza. Mom will pay I'm betting.

I'm sorry but I'm not. That is exactly what this "case" is showing.

I really liked the part where her captors fed her cheese crackers, same thing she bought at Target. Was she worried they'd x-ray her stomach. LOL but NOT. Little truths in the LIES. I also liked the part where she got free and zeroed right towards a path to home, AMAZING that the captors kept her somewhere she'd just luck out and have a beeline to home. Duh.

It's Plunder so take it for what it is worth. She gets docs and does a really good job at times but she also is what at times I would compare to Daily Mail or People. She doesn't outright say it but points out all the smiling mug shots, social media, etc. I don't generally watch such kind of things BUT in this case look at the young woman who did this.... It's that kind of case. So linking.

She does state the facts though.

there is some interesting info in it. misdemeanor in alabama, felony in florida, etc. for an ELEVEN year old girl. speaking of differences of states and laws. so she puts the serious stuff in it but dances with the sensational part like she can't tell if she's pregnant....

I admittedly go back and forth on Plunder. I quit her for awhile. Then she got better, now going a bit to the sensational again....

Still enjoying herself obviously, she didn't learn a thing. Hopeless🤷‍♀️
Agree. All one has to do is see that smile to believe it was all or partly for view, followers and attention. I have to wonder if she'd be smiling if she was charged with a felon rather than misdemeanors. Further I have to wonder if she would/will be when doing jail time. Don't know that it will happen but I think a judge should give her the full time allowable especially if she doesn't come clean about where she was. I honestly think she'd have lied about that in her letter if she hadn't learned they'd find out. I also think she IS lying about no one else involved. This "girl" didn't spend 48 hours in the woods. She also likely has another phone and dislikes her mother tracking her 24/7. I guess the loss of her job doesn't phase her either.

Since she was tracked with a family app, I have to wonder if she did this in part because she needed a couple of days for something and had no other way to get away from home for that long. And if she needed a day or two for something. The ridiculous story though was unnecessary imo unless there was absolutely no way to get away from mom, work and school without pulling something but still, she didn't need to make up THIS kind of story.

She took a robe from work right? And bought snacks. I personally zero in on two thoughts, one more than the other. And the snacks. One thought is of course a hotel but it would have to be near or she got an Uber or had help and someone pick her up. The info about a Red Roof Inn would fit into that thought too... However, one would think by now that would be found out if she was at a hotel. The other thought would relate to if she indeed was pregnant. I'll leave that right there as I have no desire to go into it and it doesn't need to be gone into but I don't doubt it's being discussed somewhere.

Who knows though. She went and got somewhere from a dark interstate and that means she walked at night or had a ride of some type. She doesn't seem like the walk far at night type.

I wonder if charging her would allow them to get warrants to access her accounts... I wonder if she stole anything else at work. Why was she searching about how to steal money from a till...

Carlee Russell like abduction hoaxes could soon face harsher consequences

State leaders are drafting legislation that would place heightened consequences on anyone who fakes their own abduction. This legislation comes in response to the fact that Carlee Russell will likely only face misdemeanor charges for lying to law enforcement.

The pending legislation would make it a felony to fake an abduction, meaning that there would be significantly larger consequences for those who follow in Russell’s footsteps.

“This bill includes prison sentences, and mandatory restitution requirements for the cost of resources expended by law enforcement agencies during a hoax abduction,” said State Senator April Weaver.

Senator Weaver said that she intends on introducing the legislation in the 2024 legislative session. The hope is that by strengthening the punishment, law enforcement will be able to remain focused on real cases.

“There are other crimes, other victims of crimes that did not get the attention and the investigative services they might have otherwise gotten had we not poured so many resources with so many agencies, local, state and even federal agencies looking for Carlee Russell,” said former United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama Jay Town.

The length of any sentences and restitution amounts will likely be debated and discussed once Senator Weaver officially proposes the new law.

Too bad they can't make it retroactive since SHE caused the proposal of such. Just more sh*t she did.

I hope they think it through when writing it. For one, anyone helping them and in the know should face the same and I'm far from convinced she did not have help.

For another what about those that intentionally go missing but don't "fake an abduction" necessarily. A gray area there I'd think...

She should be so proud of herself (NOT) and of costing more time and effort and $$$ now.

I'm not against the law at all, there should be something. Too bad she won't get hit with it though BUT she's the type likely to pull such a thing again law or no law so who knows... I doubt she knew what trouble she could or coudn't get into the first time so why would it stop her now. I doubt it crossed her mind she wouldn't be believed for one moment.
