Search continues for Carlee Russell: Woman vanished in Hoover after reporting child walking on I-459

Rewards totaling $25,000 are being offered as the search continued Friday for a woman missing after she told family she was checking on a child she said was walking alone along Interstate 459 in Hoover.

An anonymous donor has put up $20,000 for the safe return of 25-year-old Carlethia Nichole “Carlee” Russell, Hoover police said Friday afternoon. Additionally, Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000.

The search began Thursday night when Hoover 911 at 9:34 p.m. received a call from Russell, said Lt. Daniel Lowe.

Russell told the dispatcher that she was near mile marker 11 when she saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

Hoover police have not received any other calls of someone missing a small child.

Authorities are not committing to any one theory in Russell’s disappearance, police said at a Friday afternoon press conference.

”We currently are investigating every possibility,’’ Lowe said. “We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.”

Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

Talitha Russell said a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Russell is too old to be the subject of an Amber Alert, but her family is questioning why no Ashanti Alert was issued in this case.

An Ashanti Alert deals with critical missing adult cases and became a law in 2018.

Info from presser. I tried to not repeat info already known.

From the Police Chief:
She took items from her work (bathrobe, toilet paper?) prior to leaving
Granola Bars & Cheez-its from Target
Played 911 call from Carlee
She drove 600 yards up the freeway (6 football fields) saying she was following the child
Food she ordered was in the car

Carlee told detectives she saw a child and called 911. When she got out, a man came out of the trees and mumbled he was checking on the baby. He picked her up and made her go over a fence and into a car. Then she was in the trailer of an 18-wheeler. There was another female there. Heard a baby crying. Male had orange hair with bald spot. She escaped 18-wheeler and fled, captured again, but in car and blind-folded but not tied. Took into house and undressed her, took pics, no sexual contact. She woke up and was fed cheese crackers. Woman played with her hair. Put back in vehicle and was able to escape. She ran through lots of woods and came out near residence. She had small injury to lip and said her head was hurt. $107 cash in her right sock.

Internet searches in the days leading up to disappearance. July 11 "do you have to pay for amber alert" July 13 1:03 am"how to take money from register without being caught" 2:13am "birmingham bus station" 2:35 am "one way bus ticket birmingham to nashville" 12:10 pm "movie taken" work computer searches "maximum age for an amber alert" other searches will not be released at this time.

She has denied them a second interview.

Unable to verify her statement. NO REASON TO BELIEVE THERE IS A THREAT TO PUBLIC SAFETY.

Questions: (I missed a few, and left out a few repetitive ones)

Expect any charges against her? Right now our focus is to confirm her story
Family not cooperative in granting interview? They don't think her mental state of trauma makes her ready to talk
Abductor had orange hair, was he black/white/etc.? White male
Alleged abductor on loose in Hoover area? Don't believe so
Any indication of mental illness? Not that I'm aware of
Next time a young POC disappears it might not be taken seriously? We investigate every one equally
Where do you think she went? That's the question, we don't know
Parents believed what daughter is saying.
We're ready to talk as soon as she is ready.
We'll figure it out, I promise you that.
Do her internet searches tell you what happened? Day she gets kidnapped she is googling the movie Taken, that is strange
6 football fields traveled, what does that tell you? A toddler, barefoot, 3-4, is traveling 6 football fields quickly with no interruption is hard to understand
We don't see anybody on the interstate except her and her car. Footage sent to FBI for enhancement, not returned yet.
Is investigation held up until you can speak with her again? We're still working on things but we need to talk with her again

6 football fields is 1/3 of a mile. I'm not buying it.

I'm not buying anything she's selling at this point.

So basically the entire time she's rolling up the highway with her flashers on, we're to believe she was following the child.

It's a shame. All that effort and resources that could have gone to someone who was truly missing. She's not only made it less likely for anyone to stop and help a person in need, but also less likely for anyone to get involved in helping missing persons. (Not talking about us here, but the general population who may not typically follow something like this.)

I still give her the benefit of doubt but it sure all sounds fishy. Especially the police statements make me think this is a big nothing burger 🍔
I'm pretty sure it is and not much benefit of doubt left. They didn't even share all google searches etc. but the one about if you have to pay for an Amber alert stood out as did how old did you have to be to have one... As well as a LOT of other things. Snack preparation... I mean...

She didn't disappear from any foul play. She did it herself! Need attention much?!!!! Worry people. Have LE search. At what co$t?. She should have to pay it back! Dumb b****!!! A few years ago, We had a woman about to get married disappear. She did it herself also. Alot of people were pizzed!!! It wasn't that she didn't want to get married. She was gone longer than this. Fake story. I don't understand why people do this. Except "I'll show them". Or "Let's see how upset people get". I think it's a terrible thing to do. I wouldn't bother.

I don't know if this was to do it to "show someone" and worry them or thinking she'd be some kind of heroine, how tragic she was abducted while saving a little boy, etc. Or both. She maybe didn't expect them to realize very quickly there was no child, etc., etc. and she maybe had a different ending in mind, hard to say.

Dpesn't matter though, she's a selfish little brat only she's an adult. An overboard drama queen who even involves LE in her games.

Well Carlee got her fame and attention as Plundr has a video about her. I'm onily a few minutes in and already my opinion of this spoiled selfish, brat is only more cemented in. Also now have an opinion or starting one of her mother. If you want a dive into things like they gave her a new car for high school graduation to her clearly self centered social media, etc. here's a video for you. It's not all that, there are also clips of the PC tied in and facts. Like I said, I haven't watched it yet. What I have watched has more web searches by Carlee, etc.

Clearly she planned this and not very well, on video from work stealing a robe and toilet paper. Work stood up for her somewhat with a press release and I wonder if any of her coworkers knew of her plans or her "SIL". Maybe not. She had to know there were cameras at her job so clearly she never thought thinrgs through or was so sureic her ridiculous story would be believed that she never thought they'd look at what she was doing prior, like work vidoe and her snack run.

She ain't the brightest bulb, is she?

This is one selfish overindulged BRAT who is about Carlee plain and simple. This "girl" is so full of herself but where is Ms. Full of it now? In hiding and hanging onto mommy's apron strings and letting mommy take the criticism and heat and look the fool for defending her. fool arse daughter..
