Missing nine-year-old girl was holidaying in the Blue Mountains, search continues

Police are continuing an extensive search for a missing nine-year-old girl who was holidaying in the NSW Blue Mountains.

Charlise Mutten, 9, was reported missing from a Mt Wilson property at about 8.20am on Friday and has reportedly been missing since Thursday.

Acting Superintendent John Nelson said Charlise is originally from Queensland and has been holidaying with her family in Mt Wilson over the school break.

Superintendent Nelson said Mt Wilson is a large area to search and police will use all resources possible to try and find the girl.

"The Mt Wilson area is a small community surrounded by bushland and some rugged bushland," he said.

The search restarted at first light with police holding grave concerns for the girl's welfare.

Crews looked in tents and bins for any sign of the child yesterday.

Officers are investigating all possibilities in the search for Charlise.

"She's a nine-year-old girl and she's missing we're here to pull out every stop that we can," Superintendent Nelson said.

"We're not discounting any scenario at this stage."

A woman was comforted by ambulance officers at the search centre before being taken to a Katoomba hospital.

Police are appealing for help from the public and have sent out geo-targeting messages.

Her parents' house has also been searched and is under police guard.

Superintendent Nelson said it is a "traumatic" experience for the family.

A car was seized in Penrith by police yesterday.

9News understands the homicide squad has been called in to assist local detectives.

Media - CHARLISE MUTTEN: Missing from Mt. Wilson, NSW since 13 Jan 2022 - Age 9

Well, they must have suspected this pretty early, having confiscated the boat and car right away. I'm so upset for Charlise. Poor girl couldn't even be away from her safe home for two weeks without this happening... :(

Police arrested the 32-year-old at a Surry Hills unit on Tuesday night, where he was refused bail and is expected to appear in Central Local Court on Wednesday.

A crime scene has been established and is being examined by specialist forensic officers, who are working to formally identify the child.

The missing girl, who can no longer be named due to a charge being laid, had been holidaying with family at Wildenstein Private Gardens in Mount Wilson, about 120 kilometres northwest of Sydney.

Last seen on Thursday, police weren’t alerted to her disappearance until Friday when a family member enquired about her whereabouts.

A neighbouring resident told AAP his wife had been reading early on Friday morning when she heard a car heading up the road without headlights.

“She went to the window and got out of bed and saw through the trees the shadow (of the vehicle),” the neighbour said.

“People go out at night and usually have headlights.”

Police are expected to address the media at 11.15am AEDT on Wednesday morning to provide further updates.

Human remains 'consistent' with missing nine-year-old, murder accused refused bail in court

Police have confirmed human remains found last night were "consistent" with those of a nine-year-old girl who went missing in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.

A man was charged with the murder of the girl last night.

"There is still a lot to determine... It's now in the hands of the coroner, cause of death and a number of other lines of inquiry.

"The search will remain ongoing to look for any clues to help us identify the cause of the death."

She urged anybody with information to come forward.

"There are still many elements of this investigation that we have to work through to determine exactly what happened from the time the young girl was reported missing up until last night when those remains were found," Acting Commissioner Webb said.

There were a number of "anomalies in relation to movement data," Deputy Commissioner David Hudson alleged.

"Through electronic means, through GPS tracking, through CCTV tracking, we were able to establish certain facts in relation to the vehicle he (the accused) was driving and those movements and also certain suspicious behaviour which escalated our scrutiny in relation to his potential involvement.

"Those movements included on Thursday afternoon after a number of telephone conversations with the girl's mother, to purchase a number of sandbags, 20kg sandbags from a hardware store, fuel [for] a boat and then try and float that boat on the water at one of the docks in inner Sydney.

"That was unsuccessful because the boat was inoperable. And then tracking that individual back to the location where we commenced the search yesterday afternoon."

Deputy Commissioner Hudson also said the girl's cause of death will not be known until a post-mortem is undertaken. He said police will allege the accused placed the girl in a barrel.

"Until the post-mortem is conducted, we are still uncertain of what exactly happened to her.

"What we are sure of is that the accused that we charged with murder was responsible for, firstly, placing her in the barrel, and then disposing of that barrel in the bushland where she was located."

What???!!!! So now she never was on the veranda the night before? And I figured that was something they determined as fact/by an independent witness or something after they weren't called until what was said to be the next day...

The reporting is still confusing but the sandbags comment, number of days, etc., it is sounding like the mother is not innocent either. It said only after inquiry of a family member was she reported missing although again that is confusing, it could be the mom, grandma on that side or his family.

And I agree. Two short weeks. This girl was with them or to be with them only that long, and this happens to her? The poor child.

So much unknown still. Did one or the other lose their temper? Drugs or alcohol? Or did he (I pray not) molest her. Not for one minute do I think accident in this case.

I'm not sure it is fair to compare, and we have awesome results here at times too, and different areas but just talking what we have seen in Australia generally with Cleo and now this case, they have been impressive with the solving and use of CCTV, geo fencing and more and they get it QUICK. Cleo was found alive and this child was not sadly but talk about getting after it. Cases here we often are saying why didn't they check for video or get it before it was covered over, etc. We don't seem to have the CCTVs and quick access they do there and more. Of course every case is different and some more difficult and this man made a ton of mistakes it already appears but still... Kudos to LE there even though the outcome is not what anyone wanted.

Their reporting on the other hand and media is as bad and confusing at times as it is here. And they clearly have some very creepy types and evildoers as well... And crimes against children :(

I’m furious! I hope there will be another arrest very soon. It appears there needs to be, anyway.

I hope and pray she didn’t know what was coming. Sweet little girl.😢

I'm starting to wonder if they no more than got the girl and then this was done. They were only to have her two weeks and it was days before this was reported. Did she have one moment of a decent "holiday"? I doubt it somehow. Who knows, maybe they didn't even want her with but had to take her. I guess we will know more when we find out what happened and why.

Charlise’s biological father, Scott Hensby, posted an emotional farewell to his daughter on Facebook on Wednesday. “Goodbye you beautiful little girl. I love you so much. I miss you every day! You have captured the hearts of the nation and the world, and now those hearts are breaking, with mine,” he wrote. “This doesn’t happen! Kids need to be safe. What is wrong with you people???? We will get the answers for you baby, and we will honour you properly. This is not the end of you or your story.”

Detectives allege Stein drove around Sydney for up to five hours with Charlise's body in the back of his boat while he tried to work out where to dump her, according to The Daily Telegraph.
Homicide detectives retraced Stein's steps after he allegedly purchased five 20kg bags of sand from Bunnings, fuelled up his boat and tried to launch it from an inner-Sydney dock.

They also allegedly found a blue tarpaulin in the back of the boat, which was inoperable.

Police allege Stein ended up hiding the heavy barrel containing Charlise's body in dense bushland after struggling to dump it in the Colo River.

The barrel was found late on Tuesday, after a wide-scale investigation was launched last week.

Kallista Mutten is understood to have reported Charlise's disappearance at 8.20am on Friday, January 14, though police were told she was last seen some time on Thursday afternoon.

This sparked a major air and ground search of the bushland surrounding the property.

Yesterday, officers attached to Strike Force Buena conducted a search in the vicinity of the Colo River, about an hour's drive from where Charlise went missing.

The body of a child was located in a barrel. The body is yet to be formally identified but Acting Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the remains were "consistent with the missing 9-year-old".

At about 8.30pm last night, police attended a unit on Riley St, Surry Hills, and arrested Stein, who is engaged to Charlise's mother, Kallista Mutten.

He is a victim as he is not involved clearly but I ask it in other cases and will do so here as well, why was she with the grandmother? The mother's bf (and possiby the mother) are the responsible parties but she also had a father.

I assume the gma is maternal since in the beginning and in different articles it almost made one think mom and daughter lived with grandma or at least lived together where gma was from. Of course that is part of the reporting and "facts" that kept changing that irritated me so it is hard to say.

I'm not saying he did anything wrong but one would wonder how involved he was and how often he saw her as well. That's all I'm saying, I don't mean anything more.

Timeline will be interesting.

Police also allege Stein had “numerous conversations” with the child’s mother by telephone between the time Charlise disappeared and her body was found. In court, Stein’s lawyer asked for a full mental-health assessment, saying his client had issues for some time.

Mr Rowe said Stein had “been under long-term care for mental health problems” and had been prescribed a fairly high dose of antipsychotic drugs quetiapine and risperidone for many years.

QUETIAPINE

Quetiapine is an antipsychotic medicine that is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.

Quetiapine is used to treat bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Quetiapine is also used together with antidepressant medications to treat major depressive disorder in adults.

Quetiapine may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

RISPERIDONE

Risperidone is an antipsychotic medicine that works by changing the effects of chemicals in the brain.

Risperidone is used to treat schizophrenia in adults and children who are at least 13 years old.

Risperidone is also used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Risperidone is also used to treat symptoms of irritability in autistic children who are 5 to 16 years old.

A lot of pics from her memorial at this link. SO SAD!

There are a ton of pics in there and it was a long article but there was some info as well:

Police will allege Stein spent up to five hours driving around Sydney with his fiancé's daughter's body in the back of a boat, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The 31-year-old spent hours deciding where to leave her body before dumping it near a river, police will claim.

Detectives believe Charlise's mother had left her daughter in the care of Stein last Tuesday night - the last time she was confirmed to be alive.

Police will allege she was killed within the following 15 hours.

So he is actually in a big city with her in the back of the boat, for FIVE HOURS. I assume he was pulling the boat with the truck and most likely she was in the barrel or covered. Wow. I wonder why he was looking in the city for a spot... I mean he may have went in to buy the sand bags but then why not look for somewhere remote after that... And cities are full of cameras...

So mom left her in his care but didn't report until days later... Where was mom? And why did she leave her with him to begin with? Did she leave the area? Go out to party? Go back to town? Some part of me (no real reason) keeps wondering was this to be her first meeting with him and time to "bond" alone together before mom and he got married and mom loved and naively trusted him...? We have few details on how often Charlise was with mom or him or even if ever or how long mom and him had been together...

Later in the article it says the police can't get near mom yet. Well, I hope there is a real reason for that medically or mentally. It seems unusual to me, it's not like she was in a car accident or something and healing physically.

Mom may be completely innocent and totally over the edge and grief stricken and I don't judge that. I hope she does manage to step up soon for her child if she is innocent and against him and talk to police and asist with information. And if she is not, well then that protection in hospital better not last too long imo.

Defense and mental health assessments... Typical. And if he was known to have issues what was the child doing with him? The conversations with the mother seem to point to her involvement or knowledge. I sure hope not but am not too optimistic with regard to her either...

Every person who kills a child is an evil doer regardless of the media.

I am on Quetiapine. I am not bipolar or schizophrenic. I have severe clinical depression. It is used with other medication I take. I take 250 mg at night and 2 25 mg's in the day if needed. I don't care who knows it. Hold it against me. Judge me, Whatever. So when they use this crap as an excuse it really pizzes me off. I've been under mental health care for 3 decades. Another excuse they use saying she has been under care for years.

Risp Was prescribed to my son when he was having meltdowns during middle school. He has AS. In his case, he was more docile. I don’t see how that could contribute to killing someone? Sounds like excuses to me.
