The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

The firearm charge did have "or threaten to" as part of the charge. More might have, but that one definitely did.

Yes. It was interesting to read them, there is a little bit of detail, and one has to guess but the did detail in each charge, blunt instrument, firearm, etc. I feel so sorry for Gannon and now am even wondering what Laina was aware of--children are way more observant than some realize. And Harley.

I forgot until I just thought of it that Tee had applied for a job both was it in Colorado Springs AND Florida with Frontier Airlines. There is some Florida connection here... Whether she did it alone or had help on the other end...

Human remains found in Florida tentatively IDed as Gannon Stauch

Colorado National Guard

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says human remains believed to be Gannon Stauch have been found in Florida.

According to the sheriff's office, deputies in Santa Rosa County were called to a report of a deceased juvenile male in Pace, Florida on March 18.

An autopsy was performed and the juvenile was identified as Stauch, the 11-year-old who went missing from the Lorson Ranch neighborhood of Colorado Springs on Jan. 27.

Stauch's stepmother, Letecia Stauch, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, and tampering with a corpse. She was the one who reported Gannon missing, but evidence mounted that led authorities to arrest her earlier this month.

Police are asking if anyone saw Letecia Stauch in the area of Pace or Pensacola between Feb. 3 and Feb. 5 to call 719-520-6666.

Letecia was arrested in South Carolina before being extradited back to El Paso County.

Few details about what led to Letecia's arrest have been released, and a gag order has been filed for the case. We're expecting to learn more details at a preliminary hearing set for a future date, but most of the court documents connected with the murder charge have been sealed.

This is a breaking story, check back for updates.

Florida? This... this is surprising. I’m glad he’s finally been found and that it was sooner rather than later. I was worried the state would cut a deal in order to get information on his location.

I was too. I hope nothing here has to do with her providing anything. She lost her chance of using that info to cut any kind of deal now that he is found. Jmo, but I think she would have went to her grave or to prison and never ever give up his location, not to LE anyhow. And I honestly think it was her last bit of control and vitriol towards Landen (and possibly Al as well).

And doesn't walking away seem so much easier than all that would be required for this outcome? She would have had her freedom, her daughter wouldn't have been brought into this and the Stauch's would have Gannon, simply by just walking away.
Yes - walking away, even when financially, physically and emotionally difficult, is still so much easier!

This is something that I will never understand - why don't these step-monsters just walk away? What makes them think that killing another persons child will make their life better? When they feel that anger and hatred boiling towards any child, why don't they just go onto a different life? What can be done to better protect these children who never wanted to be raised by strangers? I am just so heartbroken for this innocent boy, Gannon, who likely suffered horrific emotional and physical pain at the hands of this sick woman.

I was a stepmother for a few years and the kids were not easy because their parents didn't have good parenting skills and they were at each other's throats. However, I never felt like harming the children in any way shape or form. There's something deeply evil about this woman. Believe me.

My understanding from the news coverage (not social media but TV stations) is that he was found by a highway construction worker. Doesn’t seem likely to have been a deal, especially with the 8 additional charges.
