San Antonio police believe a young mom and her baby who have been missing since January may be in danger.

Twenty-year-old Dlanny Chairez and her 18-month-old son, James Avi Chairez, were last seen January 4 in a store in the 7100 block of Marbach Road.

“Through the investigation, detectives now believe they might be in danger and urge anyone with information to contact the San Antonio Police Department Special Victims Unit,” said SAPD officer Alisia Pruneda.

A mother and baby’s disappearance has a family member fearing the worst

A San Antonio woman is hoping for the safe return of her niece and 18-month-old great-nephew after the two disappeared last month.

San Antonio police said Dlanny Chairez,20, and her son James Avi Chairez, were last seen in the 7600-block of West Military Drive.

Mariesol Gomez said she has tried constantly contacting Chairez but has not received a response.

“She left everything behind,” Gomez said. “It was all in drawers and on the floor. James’s clothes, diapers and toys. Everything.”

D'Lanny is in custody.
I'm reading on now:

SAN ANTONIO — Court records reveal new information in the case of a missing 20-year-old mother and her still missing toddler son. The San Antonio Police Department announced on Tuesday morning that D’Lanny Chairez is under arrest.

According to an affidavit, Chairez was brought into SAPD headquarters on Monday. It states she refused to answer any questions about her 18-month-old son, James Avi Chairez, but says she "spoke about wanting to give him up for adoption" and that she spoke at length about her mental health issues and wanted the victim to "be in a better place." It also said she spoke about not being ready to be a mother and that her son "deserves better."

Court records say family members have since questioned her about where she and James are, but she has been inconsistent, even saying she gave him away to “multiple different people for adoption.”

An affidavit says they have conducted multiple search warrants, including on Chairez’s trailer, where they found James’ car seat, stroller, diapers, toys and more.

They also say they found human blood on a crib bed sheet. Police do say they believe James to be alive, the search is ongoing.

"Investigators believe baby James is still in the San Antonio area. We are asking for any information on baby James’ whereabouts and who he may be with to call SAPD Missing Person’s Unit at 210-207-7660.”

‘Everything she says has been a lie’ | Missing boy, 1, believed dead, aunt says

A weeks long search for a missing 1-year-old boy continued Tuesday after the child’s mother, D’Lanny Chairez, was arrested on a charge of abandoning the baby.

An affidavit for Chairez’s arrest detailed how Chairez told investigators Monday she wanted to give her child up for adoption because she wasn’t ready to be a mother and the child “deserved better.” However, court documents state she was silent about any information on her son’s whereabouts.

"I asked her right away, ‘Where's James? Where is he?,’” Gomez recalled. "She's just breathes and she's like, 'I gave him up for adoption.' And I mean, I'm hysterical, I'm crying, I'm trying to understand why, I'm asking her, 'Why? Why?' And she just said she tried and she didn't want James to live the kind of life that she would have been living.”

Gomez said Chairez claimed she gave the baby to a couple she had known for approximately two years. Gomez said she pleaded with Chairez to get the baby back, but when Chairez said she wasn’t able, Gomez then asked for proof of the adoption.

“You're giving your child away, why didn't you give them the shot record?” Gomez pondered. "Why didn't you give them the Social Security card? Why don't you give them his health folder? Why didn't you give them all those diapers, you know, cases of diapers that you had there, the cases of wipes, the clothes, the toys, everything was there.”

After not hearing from Chairez, Gomez said she went to her trailer around February 22 and called police when she saw what appeared to be a blanket covered in blood. Chairez and her son were nowhere to be found. She said she called police.

Court documents appear to allude to the blood-covered crib blanket. Arrest documents confirmed the blanket was covered in human blood.

Based on the inconsistencies in Chairez’s story and the bloody blanket, Gomez fears the baby is dead.

"Everything to this point has led to — her actions right now are speaking very loudly,” Gomez said.

“I mean, as hard as it is, I don't think (he’s alive), because everything she says has been a lie.”

LE thinks he is alive and in the San Antonio area? Yet we have blood and a family who thinks he is dead? The blood is not clear, LE makes it sound like a spot or some small amount (not clear) on a crib sheet and family makes it sound like a soaked blanket.

My guess is like usual, most LE will say they are alive until they have to say otherwise and I speculate they think he is in the San Antonio area because I am thinking she perhaps did not have a vehicle, so how far could she go? After all, she was seen riding a bus around for hours without the child. All just guessing on my part.

I have less hope than I did previously. At this point, I don't see why she would not tell LE the truth if he is alive... She would be in less trouble I would imagine and they would let her know that I would think and even perhaps no trouble if she can show he is alive and well....

This reminds me of many cases like Evelyn Boswell and Kaylee Anthony... Claiming the child is with family, a sitter, a "nanny", etc... but untrue... I have a bit of slim hope yet but not a lot...

My thoughts, too. Most won't say they think a person is deceased unless there is absolute proof and/or murder charges have been filed. No one can come back later then and say that the investigators didn't do their job and weren't ever looking for a live baby cause they just assumed he was dead.

This doesn't sound good at all.

I agree. I think she would likely tell if the baby was somewhere safe. If she has custody, and she left him with a sitter safe and she nor they hurt him in any way, then she has done nothing wrong nor have they. I hope we are wrong but I agree, LE always says they believe and hope they are alive until proof to the contrary... Or almost always...

I’m confused about the timeline. When was the bloody blanket found, versus when was the store video taken where he was definitely alive? Perhaps LE has based their hope that he’s alive on the timeline. Kids get nosebleeds and such - is the blanked soaked like the family seems to imply or is it a spot or two? Although, any blood in a case like this is less likely to be a nosebleed.

Good question. All I can find is that the blood was found my law enforcement after the two went missing.

According to the documents, police searched Chairez’s home multiple times and discovered “apparent blood ... on a sheet that is consistent with a crib sheet.” Tests confirmed that the substance was human blood, the documents said. Investigators also said James’ car seat, stroller and other items remained in the home, KENS reported.

Family's plea to missing toddler's mother: 'What deep secret do you have?'
Still Marisol is desperate for one answer -- Where is Baby James?

"At least give us an idea of where you may be because your silence, says a lot right now," Gomez said.

Thursday, records show the 20-year-old mother has lawyered up.

"That just means now that she's doesn't have to say anything," Gomez said.

Mariesol fears her niece will remain silent as she has, despite meeting with detectives in the last 24 hours.

"She's sticking to the story of that he was adopted,” Gomez said. “And she went to a good family."

Missing child’s mother tells great aunt she gave up baby for adoption in newly released recording

The great aunt of a child last seen several months ago has shared a recording of a conversation she says she had with the baby’s mother about the child’s whereabouts.

Mariesol Gomez says the mother, D’Lanny Chairez, admitted to giving up baby James Chairez for adoption. However, it’s unclear when the recording took place.

Quick timeline from links:

Thanksgiving - James last seen by relatives, mother D'Lanny cuts family off at this time

Jan 4 - video capture of mother and James at Walgreens on Marbach Rd

Feb 22 - aunt seemingly enters trailer home of D'Lanny and James. She sees blood on blanket/crib sheet. Home is in disarray with visible areas of damage. All of James possessions are in home.

Feb 22 - aunt makes missing person report

Feb 22 - mother and son seen in 7600 block West Military Drive

Feb 24 - D'Lanny rides VIA bus alone for hours.

So what happened between West Military Drive on the 22nd and this hours long bus ride 2 days later? Hopefully, her phone will prove useful.

I’m banking on the phone records too.

The aunt happened to go over there the same day that they went missing? What are the odds?

It seems screwy, doesn't it? Feel free to double check my dates. I'm thinking D'Lanny might have went on the run after realizing her aunt had called the police. But I dunno.
I think too there may have been a catalyst here. Perhaps the aunt texted her and said something on the order of she wanted to see the child and was coming over or calling the child in missing or perhaps she was otherwise alerted somehow. It would also explain her leaving with nothing of the child's necessities.

The thing is apparently the child was safe and alive up to this point....

we at the very least know that the baby seemed/looked fine weeks/months after the aunt says they saw him last and was already making excuses for them not seeing him. I wonder if the aunt was getting too clingy or too (insert any reason) and she didn't like it and she just had enough and needed distance. Been there.

I have no idea if this particular baby is fine or not though.

It seems there is some dynamic here we are unaware of that involves the family. It gives me hope he was seen that recently but what worries me is the mother though not telling LE where the child is... If he is fine, why wouldn't she...
