Missing Endangered Alert Issued for 13-Year-Old Wisconsin Boy Who Took Family Van and Gun

Wisconsin authorities have issued a Missing Endangered Person Alert for a 13-year-old boy who has now been missing for more than 48 hours.

James Yoblonski took the family fan early Monday morning and drove away from his Reedsburg home, as CrimeOnline reported. The van was later found on US 12 near Devil’s Lake State Park, and search crews found his cell phone and a campsite with some of his belongings nearby.

But they’ve not found the boy.

“It’s a very wooded terrain. The woods [are] very thick, there’s rock ledges, there’s cliffs,” Sauk Sheriff Chip Meister told WKOW. “You could be six, eight feet from another deputy and you can’t see that deputy — so that’s how thick it is.”

Meister said more than 40 officials are participating in the search along with both a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft from the Department of Natural Resources.

William Yoblonski, the boy’s father, told WKOW that his son “is not someone who would run away” and called the situation “dire.” He said he’s not concerned that the teen took the van — or, apparently, a gun that is missing from the home.

Rainy weather hampered ground crews searching for the boy on Tuesday, and the search ended at dark but was set to resume Wednesday morning.

The Sauk Co. Sheriff’s Office previously stated that while the handgun is suspected to be with Yoblonski, he is not a threat to himself or others.

Police continuously searched for Yoblonski in the Devil’s Lake State Park area, saying they believe he is avoiding law enforcement in an attempt to live off the grid as a survivalist.

Anyone with information on Yoblonski’s possible location is encouraged to call the Sauk Co. Sheriff’s Office at 608-355-4495.

I have to wonder if this is being done with LE's blessing or not. They didn't want anyone I thought searching and the father I know was feeling helpless because he couldn't go look.

A 13-year-old Sauk County boy who disappeared in or near Devil's Lake State Park has family ties to another case of a missing person in the Fox Cities.

James Yoblonski, who went missing June 12, is a great-nephew of Andy Wegner, who is married to Laurie Depies' mother Mary Wegner.

Laurie Depies, of Appleton, disappeared from outside her boyfriend's apartment complex at age 20 on Aug. 19, 1992. Despite an investigation spanning decades, her case remains open.

For Mary, hearing of Yoblonski's disappearance resurfaced many of the same feelings Laurie's did: "Fear, anxiousness, sick to my stomach and a thought of 'no, not again,'" she said.

Search for 13-year-old still considered 'missing persons case' nearly 1 month after his disappearance

Nearly a month after 13-year-old James Yoblonski went missing in the Baraboo Bluffs, local law enforcement leading the search said they're still working to rule out every possible explanation for the teen's disappearance.

"We're still treating this as a missing persons case," Lt. Steven Schram with the Sauk County Sheriff's Office told News 3 Now on Thursday. "We're investigating everything that can go along with that."

Schram added that the sheriff's office has gotten several tips of possible sightings, though most of them were reported too late to be helpful for the investigation. Other tips, including reports of new items located in the woods, have prompted renewed searches but have yet to lead to any significant progress in search efforts.

Law enforcement's main focus, Schram said, is ruling out other possible explanations for Yoblonski's disappearance, including whether or not the teen might have gotten support from someone else.

If and when new information comes in that might help locate Yoblonski, Schram said the sheriff's office has personnel on standby to react. No large-scale searches were planned as of Thursday, but that could change at a moment's notice.

"We're just as concerned about it as everybody else," Schram said.

I cannot even fathom what they are doing (or not doing) in this case. I am beginning to doubt a lot of things. He is THIRTEEN for goodness sakes. Much longer and I am going to start thinking LE in that area and assistance they could call for are total bumbleheads. Is there a plan here at all any longer? I figured they were formulating one at first... And working behind the scenes. Apparently not. And is he getting support or is elsewhere by now?

Sauk County Sheriff's Office exploring 'all avenues' in search for missing teen

The Sauk County Sheriff's Office said Friday that "all avenues are being looked into" in the search for a 13-year-old boy who has not been seen in a month.

In an update Friday, Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister said multiple investigators are reviewing tips, interviews and electronic information to find the teen. Meister said other locations of interest have been searched, but did not give further details on where those locations were.

Well gee. Avenues are being LOOKED at. What? Considered? Thinking about? Is there a PLAN?

This case began and seemed like they kept coming across evidence in the woods he was alive and gone intentionally and in what area. When was the last time such was said? I mean hikers etc. can find evidence of a fire, a water bottle or who knows what now and that doesn't mean its his. It is summer. Do they have any evidence he is still in the woods or alive?

This CHILD could not have packed so much stuff and hauled it to still have food, water and you name it after all this time. He is either dead (I sure hope not) or someone is helping him.

I think there is more to this story they are not sharing. The whole survivor thing comes from somewhere. And/or you know what type into that a child of this age would run into online. And he took a gun. Isn't it always weapons, plans, living off grid...

I want to know WHO gave him the book or guide and why. I want to know a lot more than that.

To the public they are treating this as no big deal but someone else is either involved in this or he connected with. Imho.

At first it seemed like a teen just wanting to try such. Well I bought it or thought maybe but not at this point. Something else is up or was wrong at home, etc.

(WFRV) – Authorities in south-central Wisconsin gave an update regarding a missing 13-year-old boy who originally went missing on June 12.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office provided an update on the case of missing 13-year-old James Yoblonski. On June 12, authorities sent out a press release saying that Yoblonski was missing.

<snip>

Law enforcement and Yoblonksi’s family have reportedly done more searches of the area of USH 12 since June 12. The release also mentioned that law enforcement has searched several other locations that are believed to be areas of interest.

We will continue this investigation until it is resolved.

'It's your worst nightmare coming true'; Sauk County teen missing for a month

13-year-old James Yoblonski has now been missing for exactly one month.

The Sauk County Sheriff said they are still working to find him, and there are several people working on the case.

Yoblonski's father, Bill Yoblonski, sat down with 27 News and said waiting for answers has been a nightmare.

"It's your worst nightmare coming true," Bill said.

30 days and 30 sleepless nights, Bill Yoblonski said he hasn't stopped wondering where his son could be.

"I wanna know where he's at," he said. "I don't care why he did it, I just wanna know where he's at and I want him home."

Bill said trying to describe what this past month has been like feels impossible.

"[It's been] a living hell," he said. "Not sleeping, nightmares, getting tips from different people and searching different fields."

He remembered the moment he realized his son was gone.

"He wasn't in bed so I checked the bathroom, he wasn't there, so when I turned around and looked out the window, the van was gone," Bill added.

Bill said he's holding on to hope that his son will be found, but is growing frustrated.

"I'm not getting a lot of answers from the sheriff's department," he explained. "I'm getting some, but a lot of unanswered questions."

27 News reached out to the sheriff's office and was told to email them with any questions.

We sent a list of questions including: Is James’ disappearance being investigated as a criminal matter? If so, are there any suspects? Do you believe James met with someone? Do you think he's still in the woods?

The lieutenant responded with a press release which said it's still an active investigation and they are looking into all avenues. However, he did not answer our questions.

Father of missing 13-year-old Sauk Co. boy offers reward

The father of a missing 13-year-old Sauk Co. boy is offering a reward for information leading to his son’s return.

William Yoblonski posted about the reward, offering $10,000 for the return of his son, James. The reward will not be offered for just tips on his whereabouts.

I do not know what is going on here but they need to find this CHILD! what is this lackadaisical bunch of b.s. like this is some game or teenaged thing he is doing and all is fine? I cannot even IMAGINE what his father is going through.

LE can't find a teenaged boy after all this time? He has outsmarted them all? Maybe it's not that easy but it's like they aren't even trying! I allow for maybe they are hard at it behind the scenes but been awhile and this is a teenager and they knew his last whereabouts or so I thought. What is their problem?!!

It's disgusting to think you have to post a reward to give people incentive to give information, They should have given before.

I agree. They are downplaying it. IMO because he is a survivalist. But HE IS 13! And with a gun. My biggest concern would be that he isn't the survivalist they think he is. Not this LONG!!! And the gun with him, He may lose hope and use it on himself!

Yep. Bunch of b.s. Can't imagine being his father and seeing nothing being done.

Just another article about the reward.
They need to get searchers back out into the woods. The time of "scaring him deeper into hiding" is over. Find him.

James Yoblonski's father offers $10,000 reward in search for missing 13-year-old

William Yoblonski, of Reedsburg, who says he last saw his son the night before he was reported missing on June 12, said his $10,000 reward is for information that brings his son home. He said that the reward money will come from mortgaging his house.

"The $10,000 reward is only if he's found," Yoblonski said. "In the last three weeks, we haven't gotten any tips or anything."

"That tells me he went in there, set that camp up, and came out the same way he went in," said Yoblonski, adding that he feels James may have been picked up by someone. "As much as they searched, they should have found some evidence of him being in there, and they found nothing."

A second makeshift campsite was discovered by searching authorities, but none of the items were James's, according to his father and the Sauk County Sheriff's Office.

"Come out from wherever you're hiding," Yoblonski said he would tell his son. "We want you home. We love you very much."

I hope he goes home. That he is O.K. That someone hasn't preyed on him. The campsite that wasn't his makes me think someone who was homeless may have preyed on him. Or he accepted a ride from the wrong person. I hope not. JAMES! PLEASEEEE GO HOME!

I don't know if I buy any longer that he is still alone and in the wilderness. This is too long for supplies to last imo and now we hear the second campsite etc. had no evidence it was his and so forth. I don't care if he is the smartest most mature 13 year old on the planet, and we have no reason to think he is, no way he is in mosquito filled, no kitchen, no shower, no refrigerator woods this long in by choice.

He had help or has went elsewhere.

He is lost and injured or dead.

This entire woods things was a ruse, leave evidence there and a trail and is elsewhere or someone else did same, not him.

I'm also going back now and starting to rethink all of this. What proof is there this kid left on his own or left at all? Is there video in their neighborhood? At dad's office where the gun went missing? Surely there's a ring doorbell somewhere, a security cam from another business in town where the office is (not sure where it is, just guessing). What did he have with him and take? How do they know he didn't pick up or meet with someone else on leaving?

There is no explanation for how they are treating this in my opinion, as if no big concern, unless something else is going on or they are entirely uncaring and inept.

Father of missing Sauk Co. teen frustrated with investigation, offers own theories

Almost seven weeks after 13-year-old James Yoblonski went missing in Baraboo, his father feels frustrated with investigators and feels like he’s being treated as a suspect.

William Yoblonski still gets tips about his missing son’s whereabouts, though not as many as he would like. Regardless, he plans to search the bluffs in Baraboo and Devil’s Lake State Park on Friday and over the weekend.

“I just want him home,” William said. “People care and that’s what I wanted. The story pretty much died until I put the reward out and now it’s back in the news.”

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office has not stated that they have a suspect or that they are investigating anyone. Since the investigation started with a two week long search of the bluffs, investigators maintained that they believe James set out to live off the grid as a survivalist on his own.

William said the survivalist theory could be true, but also said he thinks someone kidnapped his son and may have set up a camp site to distract investigators.

On Friday, William said he believes police view him as a suspect.

“Oh yeah most definitely,” he said. “It’s hurtful for one. I love my kids and I would do anything for them. I wouldn’t do something like this. I didn’t hurt my son. No way. I’m strict with my kids. My boys will tell you the same thing, I’m very strict, but I want them to succeed and do better than I did.”

William feels like a suspect because he heard that the sheriff’s office was contacting his distant and estranged relatives, including a daughter currently living in prison.

“You’re looking in the wrong spot,” he said. “Find my son. You’re wasting time, money and resources. Start looking where you should be, not at these spots here.”

He maintained that he’s complied with every request from the police.

“I’ve done everything,” he said. “I’ve been open and honest with the officers. I’ve turned over all of my memory cards from cameras at my house, my business and everything.”

When asked directly by NBC15 News if William knows where his son James is, he responded with the following statement:

“No. If I did he’d be home right now. That’s why I put out the reward because the tips had stopped pretty much and I just want him home,” he said. “I will do whatever it takes to get my son home safe.”

I'm not sure what to think here but I think above I started to wonder how they even know this boy went missing when he did, if there was any camera footage on such and such a date in their neighborhood or dad's job, etc.

I'm not accusing him but I came to realize not long ago there absolutely wasn't any evidence he took the vehicle, gun or anything else.

Also couldn't help but wonder where the survivalist thing and "book" or "guide" came from and whom it came from.

BUT didn't they say they found evidnece at first of him, that he was well supplied and could survive for some time, etc.?

Or where did that come from...

All I know is I've ceased believing he is likely in the woods doing what he wants and happy to be there. I don't buy it any longer.

Missing teen's father takes polygraph test, says 'I had nothing to do with my son's disappearance'

The father of missing 13-year-old James Yoblonski took a polygraph test nearly two months after his son disappeared.

Bill Yoblonski said he was given a polygraph test by the Sauk County Sheriff's Department Thursday morning and passed the test.

A detective on the case confirmed to 27 News confirmed Yoblonski passed.

"Maybe that'll relieve people," Bill Yoblonski said. "I had nothing to do with my son's disappearance."

27 News spoke with Bill Yoblonski moments after the test. He said he hopes this will take the attention off him which can instead be used to help find his son.

"At first, I was upset, but now that I know that proves that I'm innocent and I had nothing to do with it, it's a relief in a little," Bill Yoblonski explained.

He said feeling like a suspect has made the past almost two months even harder.

"It makes you feel even worse that you haven't found your son and he hasn't been brought home yet," he said. "You know you're innocent but yet here we are doing this [polygraph]."

Bill Yoblonski said an FBI agent helped with the test and the investigators asked him questions such as "Do you know where James is?" and "Did you have anything to do with James' disappearance?"

The FBI is now helping the Sauk County Sheriff's Office search for the teen.
