JOSHUA "JJ" VALLOW, TYLEE RYAN, TAMMY DAYBELL, & CHARLES VALLOW: State of Idaho/Arizona vs. Lori & Chad Daybell *GUILTY*

1580704661510.png

Police seem to be no closer to finding 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan than they were when this story began months ago.

Since that time, the story has gained international attention as it’s taken twists and turns involving a purported cult, dead spouses, delusions of divinity and preparing for the end of the world. Despite all the angles, and the ever-growing number of people related to the case, the facts remain essentially the same as when it was first announced.

The two children remain missing and the parents, Lori (Vallow) Daybell, and her new husband, Chad Daybell, refuse to disclose their whereabouts to police. Both have been named persons of interest in the disappearance of the children. Law enforcement is also investigating the deaths of the Daybells’ previous respective spouses, Charles Vallow and Tammy Daybell, though neither Chad nor Lori have been named suspects in those cases.

Written timeline of events
  • April 3, 2018 - Tylee Ryan's father, Joseph Ryan, dies. Death ruled heart attack.
  • December 2018 - Chad Daybell & Lori Vallow make first appearance on Preparing a People podcast.

I was just doing some googling for Garth and came across this. Surprised it is still up but I think this is a fitting memorial to Tammy.

12- “Don’t forget about me!”

September 4, 2015
Soon after Tammy and I were married, she accepted a full-time secretarial position with Springville City. The city leaders realized it was time to computerize all of the old hand-written cemetery cards, as well as double-check their accuracy. It was more work than Tammy could do on a part-time basis, so they created the new position. The job came with full insurance benefits, and it was a blessing to us.
I was still on scholarship and progressing through BYU’s journalism program. I was offered the Assistant City Editor position at The Daily Universe beginning Fall Semester 1991, and suddenly Tammy and I felt rich. We were eating out a lot, going to concerts, buying whole boxes of Symphony candy bars at Sam’s Club, and so on. Life was great!
Tammy and I around the time of our first wedding anniversary.
Tammy and I around the time of our first wedding anniversary.
I was just enjoying living “in the now.” For once, I had put the future out of my mind. I had an adorable, loving wife, we both had good jobs, and we were having a lot of fun. Then came the announcement I’d been hoping to postpone for another year or two. Tammy said, “I feel it’s time we start our family.”
“Are you sure?” I asked. “Shouldn’t we wait until I have a solid job?”
“I feel our children are ready to come,” she said firmly, and I knew not to argue. We soon had a child on the way.
Our oldest son Garth attended my BYU graduation—in Tammy's tummy.'s tummy.
Our oldest son Garth attended my BYU graduation—in Tammy’s tummy.
Fast forward a few months later to my BYU graduation. Tammy was due in a month, and I was still worried how everything was going to work out. She told me she had prayed about it and was going to quit her job when the baby was born. She was confident I would find a job to support the family. I should have trusted her. She doesn’t have dreams or visions, but when the Spirit confirms something to her, I pay attention.
Garth was born in late May, and we loved our new little son. The Copy Editor job at the Ogden Standard-Examiner materialized within a month, and we moved to Weber County. As I outlined in an earlier post, the new job had a few pros and cons. Tammy and I were getting along fine, but Garth was actually turning into a wild child. He would get into the kitchen cupboards and dump everything out, particularly syrup. He was also a master climber. If he saw Tammy put cookies in the cupboard above the fridge, he’d find a way to get them when she wasn’t looking.
Garth was a bit of a handful as a child.
Garth was a bit of a handful as a child.
After one particularly challenging day, I went to the Ogden Temple to pray and contemplate my family’s future. I was blessed to receive a special vision where I was shown our children many years down the road. The kids seemed to be in their early 20s to late teens, and they were wearing Church clothes. It seemed to be a special event.
I watched them interact with each other from about 10 feet away. I recognized Garth, and he still had lighter hair. He was talking to a taller young man with brown hair. There were also two girls in the dream. The older one had dark short hair, and she was smiling at a girl with blonde hair. The four kids talked among themselves for a moment, then a brown-haired boy in his early teens came skipping into the room saying, “Don’t forget about me! Don’t forget about me!”
He joined the four others and smiled in my direction. This boy was the exact image of our son Mark, right down to the mischievous smile. I knew I was seeing the five children that Tammy and I would raise. It was neat to see their hair color and even their personalities. I went home and told Tammy about the vision, it brought great peace of mind to us that Garth might someday behave!
A few years later we were living in Springville again. I had taken the cemetery sexton job, and Tammy was eight months along with our fourth child, Leah.
I got an urgent call one morning at work that Tammy felt something was wrong. Her mom Phyllis was taking her to the Payson Hospital and I should meet her there.
When I arrived, Tammy was in a hospital gown waiting for her doctor to see her. She was lying on a bed and explained how she felt something pop deep inside her. As we talked, she suddenly started bleeding heavily, and it turned into a frantic situation. I gave her a quick priesthood blessing, then the nurses rushed her into an operating room. Phyllis and I got out of the way and then waited anxiously. I snuck down the hall and peered through the room’s small window. All I could see was the top of Tammy’s head as several nurses and two doctors surrounded her. I was scared, but I also felt it wasn’t Tammy’s time to die.
Within a couple of minutes, Leah was born via emergency Caesarean section about four weeks early. She was a tiny little thing, but she rebounded quickly and soon was the same size as other children her age. Needless to say, the doctor told us that Tammy was done having kids. He’d had to slice through her stomach muscles to save Leah, and combined with other factors, he advised her against ever getting pregnant again.
At the time, I was just relieved Tammy and Leah were okay, but lingering in the back of my mind was the sing-song chant of “Don’t forget about me!”
I didn’t press the issue, but Tammy hadn’t forgot about the vision either. We had some serious concerns, especially after Leah’s traumatic birth, but we also had faith the Lord would watch over her. Tammy became pregnant in the summer of 1999, and thankfully there were few complications. Mark was born in March 2000. It strengthened our testimony to see how each child fit into that vision, and we knew that our family was now complete.
That vision was so implanted on my mind that it has been a little eerie to see the kids become the people I had seen. However, I had never seen all five kids together at once like I had in the vision. When Garth departed on his mission to Oklahoma in 2011, Mark was still a small boy. Then Emma left on her mission to Tennessee before Garth returned. With the lowering of mission ages, Seth was getting ready to leave on his mission in June, before Emma got home. It looked like we’d have a stretch of nearly six years without having all five children home at the same time. I began to wonder if the dream was simply symbolic.

Our five children on the night Seth (in the middle) was set apart as a missionary. As I watched them, my vision from more than two decades earlier was fulfilled.
Then we received word that Emma had contracted a serious illness on her mission and needed to return home a few months early. We picked her up at the airport in December 2013, and she was pale and deathly ill. It took her several months to recover.
Meanwhile, Seth had received his mission call to Virginia. The night that Seth was set apart as a missionary, the five kids all put on mission badges and posed together. As I watched them, I got emotional, realizing the day had finally arrived I’d seen in my vision. I was so grateful Mark had not been forgotten!
In my next post, I will delve into some of the interesting experiences I had while working as a cemetery sexton.
Interesting in here that he felt it wasn't Tammy's time to die yet but years later he felt the opposite didn't he....

And here is where he mentions Garth climbing on top of the frig, etc. which many say is so like the story Lori told of JJ the night or general time frame he died.

I also found it interesting he talked as if Tammy wore the pants when she decided it was time to have children, even though he hoped to wait some, he says he knew he had better listen...

It seems he manipulated that (if true) the other way over the years as snakes like he will do by using for one her grandma, probably his other visions and who knows what other coercive ways. So she had wanted to be a stay at home mom... Hmm. Maybe that was just while the kids were young or something... Or she had no choice. It is certainly said she was the breadwinner. As we know he was running around both spending I am sure and authoring books no one bought.

I have found the easiest way to keep up since I have limited time is mostly just to listen to Nate each night. Putting him on for an hour either live or recorded if I can't catch the live I feel or hope covers the highlights. There is clearly too much to know it all or hear every detail covered, even for the reporters. He kind of said as much last night. Whether I will ever have a calm enough life to go back and listen or watch these trials on a day off is debatable.

So anyhow I was watching his last night. It wasn't live but I was glancing at the chat posted with it as it went along. i worked til past 9 so I couldn't catch it live.

He covered the bruises. Someone in the chat said that the ME (is it ME there or coroner, whichever one has less training) needed to resign or go. Actually hers is one testimony I did catch or listen to most of on the stand. She clearly got it wrong and should have called for an autopsy, etc. but I know they aren't doctors, etc. so I could see how it happened although I feel she certainly had some reasons to do so or at least things that didn't add up. She was also a very good witness in the sense that she never answered more than the most short of answers as it is smart for a witness to do, just answer the question. She also accepted the findings of the autopsy on exhumation by someone more qualified and agreed with it.

But these bruises now coming into evidence... That was the point of the person in chat was how, with all these bruises, could this ME not call for an autopsy. And I had to admit that's a bit too much to ignore along with the other kind of odd things. Tammy falling on the floor, Chad's changing story re that, etc., etc. In my mind I agreed, she needed to go and leave the position.

But then that got me thinking, did she even see Tammy's arms or any or much part of her body? We don't know what she was wearing. It led me back to twice I believe where someone responded where I was present, I mean an ME/coroner. They just pretty much announce and sign off on the death. They take the story and if believable and natural causes, they don't undress them or anything, they more or less just sign off and then complete a death certificate. Maybe that is just a bit too simple and not enough in any death... And it happens in probably a high percentage of them.

I don't think she testified about any bruises, maybe just one if I recall and it is likely because she couldn't see them so was Tammy dressed in long sleeves, etc. in a cooler October idaho season...

This was news as it was the first we heard of all these bruises and the local ME never touched on them.

Now on the point of the bruises, clearly it was from grabbing her, holding her, or even grabbing a sedated Tammy or some such and getting her onto the floor or something on that order...

You know I'm not convinced of who killed JJ and Tammy. I think Chad killed Tammy but I also think he may have killed JJ. I think even all three may have played into JJ's death as to hands on and disposal. The hair from Lori is on the outside of the plastic over JJ which to me is far more damning than if on the inside of the plastic. Far less chance it could have just been on his body, etc. from the day. The fact I can think it may be this one or that one is all due to guess what? The facts that show there WAS a conspiracy or I wouldn't be wondering which part of it did what... And because there are things that make each possible because all were present, talking, texting, plotting in this case or that case and on the right dates, that is what leaves it in the air as to which one but it also shows conspiracy which is why it is that way if that makes sense.

I am trying to say that in and of itself, the fact we can't be sure which one it was because of all the ties and evidence, shows the conspiracy. Even if it leans more towards Chad and Alex it then comes to what is the reason and who else if Chad was involved was also involved as they wished to marry, her kids were dark, etc., etc. and that is straight to Lori. There is so much more I can't even word but it is ALL THERE.

They need to string this together in closing big time because it IS THERE. I think most smart jurors can already do that and this will be a conviction but a good closing will ensure it.

Mel P should be interesting. I look for her to help Lori if even in a subtle way as Mel G basically tried to do with the life insurance re Charles and her knowledge of beneficiary. Mel P said she would never turn on Lori and Chad. I am curious whether this still holds true. She is deep in this and she moved with Lori and Alex. She married quickly and did I think all directed to from divorcing, marrying, moving and more. Personally I think she is a Lori clone, younger version, same manipulative person, etc.

But the prosecution is calling her so they must feel it will add something more than take away...

I think the Rexburg coroner did mention/notice a bruise but the point was made somewhere that embalming fluids can help to show bruising more clearly and that helped the Utah medical examiner who attended the exhumation because Tammy was buried in Springville, Utah. (the embalming fluid helped preserve Tammy's body).

Garth and Emma's testimony will be interesting. I am presuming they will be called. I will have to look back at the Alex phone evidence re Tammy's death.

It is coming together, I believe, as significant evidence for all three murders.

Yeah I think she did notice one bruise on one arm I believe. Nothing much more on her testimony.

The cousin is or was worried that Garth will lie for his dad and put himself in a bad place, let's hope not as it would be a stupid thing to do and would be quite obvious imo.

Yes, I am real curious as to how these "kids" will come across as they are now years older. Will they act naive or still have a lot of naivete? Or did they actually as many kids do see a lot more and understand a lot more than we think and if so will they admit it? I doubt it.

I too feel every piece is coming together with every new bit of testimony and each witness it now has 3/4 of the jigsaw pieces needed to see or almost see the entire puzzle picture. I think they will have an awesome closing as honestly, they've done a great job throughout imo. Of course we still have the defense to go...

The defense, or lack, should be interesting.

Significant dates to compare to the testimony about Alex's phone movements and receipts in the thread reader app below.

Sep 9 Tylee's death, dismemberment, burning and burial. Raccoon text.
Sep 23 JJ's death and burial
Oct 2 failed shooting on Brandon
Oct 2 Lori purchases wedding ring
Oct 3 Tammy's dead Grandma visits Chad
Oct 4 and 5 Tammy visits Springfield
Oct 9 failed shooting by man in ski mask
Oct 19 Tammy's death
Oct 23 Tammy's funeral
Nov 5 beach wedding

I was struck about how quickly that raccoon text was made after Alex left the property.

Of course, his kids were never “dark”!

Oh boy. I'd sure like to see that one but in the same breath not. I am real curious to see how the judge gets her to give a straight answer or if he can. She talks a big word salad takes it around in a circle and when she finishes you realize she never answered the question. Not sure I can take her but I am also curious to listen to it (rather watch though) and see if the judge admonishes and whether he can get her to answer the questions directly and just answer the questions.

Maybe she will surprise me but I doubt it. Maybe her circular talking was only because it was TV, etc.

Does anyone think the will call Ian?
Because of the recordings he made for the police, I think they will.

Been watching today's testimonies on the East Idaho News website and it's explosive!

They are on lunch break right now and WOW. I'm going to wait and see what you guys think. Bottom line for me is that the evidence keeps stacking up high against Lori as a co-conspirator in the murder of her children!!!!!

I don't know who the Gilberts are but the court is deciding whether to allow a podcast mentioned by them as evidence. The podcast features Jason Mow, Thor, Lori, Mel Gibb etc and is from 2018, I believe.

I was struck about how quickly that raccoon text was made after Alex left the property.

Below are the movements of Alex's phone from Sep 9th to 25th as shown in the thread reader link I previously posted - link is shown again above.

Wright says he could not identify much of anything to investigate with the Yellowstone trip - everything seemed normal and Wright is confidence Tylee returned to the apartment.
After Alex's device returns to Lori's apartment, it goes to a Maverik gas station for ten minutes around 9:43 p.m. It then goes back to Lori's apartment from and then to Alex's apartment.
There are several data points on Alex's device in Lori's apartment early on Sept. 9 - from 2:42 a.m. until 8:49 a.m.
Wright says he observed all the activity on Alex's device for the month of September. Alex was often in Lori's apartment from around 8 - midnight and then the device would go into Alex's apartment. It would stay there until morning or sometimes at late as noon.
"This was the only time I observed it go to apartment 175 between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m."
An overhead map is now shown of the apartment complex and Wright points out the distance between Alex and Lori's apartments - around 80 meters.
Other data points were recorded on Alex's phone at 4:37 a.m., 4:39 a.m., 4:41 a.m., 5:14 a.m., 6:47 a.m. and 8:49 a.m.
On Monday, Sept. 9, the device departs Alex's apartment at 9 a.m. It travels north to Chad Daybell's house - eight miles north of the apartment - and arrives around 9:15 a.m.
Numerous data points were recorded between 9:15 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. at the Daybell residence, Wright says. Lori is taking notes as Wright speaks. Some of the jurors are too. By 11:45 a.m., the device is traveling southbound and returns to Rexburg.
At 11:52 a.m., it stops at Del Taco for ten minutes.
There were four major data points Wright observed during the time period Alex was at the Daybell property. A data point appears at the shed at 9:21 a.m. with a 6-meter radius margin of error.
At 9:22 a.m., there is a data point at a gate into the property (you can drive onto the property at this gate). No quality data points are received until 9:39 a.m. and another data point is received at 10:57 a.m.
Wright agains mentions the gate allowed a vehicle to drive onto the back part of the property.

We now see the raccoon text Chad sent to Tammy on Monday, Sept. 9 at 11:53 a.m. telling her he had been burning limb debris when he saw a raccoon and had to kill and bury it in the family pet cemetery.
Coupled with the text and data points by the fire pit, "this certainly set up some red flags for us."

We now see a slide showing the activity from Alex's device on Sept. 22 - the last time JJ was seen alive. "There was some traffic with the device," Wright says. Alex went back and forth between Lori's apartment and his apartment between 4:29 p.m. and 12:11 a.m.
Alex's device doesn't move from his apartment between 12:11 a.m. and 9:41 a.m. on Sept. 23. At 9:41 a.m., the device travels from the apartments Chad Daybell's home where it arrives at 9:55 a.m.
By 10:12 a.m., Alex's device departs the residence southbound until Rexburg and goes to Lori's apartment at 10:22 a.m. It stays there until 11:14 a.m.
Two data points were found near the pond on Chad's property between 9:55 a.m. and 10:02 a.m. Other data points were recorded at the house's front door.
Wright points out on a Google Earth image where Alex's data points were recorded on Chad's property.

Wright says Alex's phone was at or near the Daybell residence four times in September 2019. On Sept. 6, Sept. 9, Sept. 23 and Sept. 25.
Alex Cox visited Dan's Window Tinting in Rexburg on Sept. 23 for about five minutes. He visited the store twice on Sept. 25.

This is a continuation of Alex' cell phone movements Sep 23 through Oct 9th.

Wright says he was looking at gun range data because of gunman incident involving Tammy Daybell, the attempted shooting of Brandon and the fact a lot of guns and ammunition were found inside Lori's garage.
Wright says on Oct. 9, there were a series of data points associated to Alex's phone at Sportman's Warehouse in Ammon. Wright points out on the map where the data points were recorded inside the store.
Wright went to Sportsman's Warehouse and pulled all the receipts during the time period Alex was there. "One particular receipt caught my attention," he says.
There were around 60 receipts and most were paid with credit or debit cards. The one that caught Wright's attention was a cash receipt. There were five items on the receipt - including a pair of Frogg Togg rain pants.
The property manager at Alex's apartment had a pair of Frogg Togg pants in their possession. There was also a ski mask, soft drink and gloves on the receipt.
When Wright was investigating at the store, he learned a camo beanie listed on the receipt was no longer in stock but all of the other items were.
We now see photos on the screen showing the glove Alex purchased (not the exact glove but one that was in the store when Wright visited).
The glove has a mitten portion that you can pull over your fingers or you can keep off. If the mitten portion isn't folded over, you can use your fingers.
e now see an image of the three-hole ski mask Alex purchased (not the actual mask but the same one that was inside the store when Wright investigated).
Now we see the Frogg Togg pants that were purchased - again, not the actual pants but a pair that was inside the store when Wright visited.
Wright says a number of searches were conducted on the HomerJMaximus account on Oct. 9, 2019. One was "Frogg Togg sizing for pants."
On Oct. 9, Alex's device left Sportman's Warehouse at 4:12 p.m. and traveled north from Ammon to the vicinity of Chad's house. It didn't stop but drives by and continues onto Highway 20.
The driver turns around and drives past the Daybell residence again before for returning to Alex's apartment until 5:16 p.m. The device remains at the apartment until 11:28 a.m. the next day.
A map is shown on the big screen and Wright uses a laser pointer to show the spots where data points were recorded by Alex's phone the evening of Oct. 9.
A data point is recorded at a canal behind Chad's house. "The road is fairly narrow and there is no shoulder. I was looking for a possible location where this person could have gone or if there was a vehicle nearby where it might have parked.
There really was no place for a vehicle...but right here near this canal there's a little pull-off that would fit one vehicle."
Back to the cell phones Alex bought at Walmart. He bought one on Oct. 8 but it was not activated until Oct. 9 at 1:20 p.m. Ten messages were sent between this device and Chad Daybell between 7:13 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
While Alex's other phone was recorded at staying at his apartment that entire night, the new phone was texting Chad.
The cell phone carrier did not keep the text messages and nothing was able to be traced from the new phone. Blake suggests we take a lunch break because she's at a good stopping point. We will be back in about an hour.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who was hoping she didn’t know what was happening to her. Sadly, that’s not the case. And I’m frustrated that not one of her kids is in there to see the honest truth.
So can I ask how do you picture it. If he is holding her arms he can't be choking her or putting something over her head at the same time. Did he get something over her and then hold her by the arms. so she couldn't tear it off? I don't like to think about it but I can't quite see how it was gone about....? Were there two, Alex and Chad and one held her down...?
