LIBBY GERMAN & ABBY WILLIAMS: Indiana vs. Richard Allen for 2017 murder of two Delphi girls *GUILTY*

On February 14, 2017, the bodies of Abigail Williams and Liberty German were discovered near the Monon High Bridge Trail, which is part of the Delphi Historic Trails in Delphi, Indiana, United States, after the young girls had disappeared from the same trail the previous day. The murders have received significant media coverage because a photo and audio recording of an individual believed to be the girls' murderer was found on German's smartphone. Despite the audio and video recordings of the suspect that have been circulated and the more than 26,000 tips that police have received, no arrest in the case has been made.[1][2][3]

Police have not publicly stated nor released details of how the girls were murdered.[6] As early as February 15, 2017, Indiana State Police began circulating a still image of an individual reportedly seen on the Monon High Bridge Trail near where the two friends were slain; the grainy photograph appearing to capture a Caucasian male, with hands in pockets, walking on the rail bridge, head down, toward the girls.[4] A few days later, the person in the photograph was named the prime suspect in the double-homicide.[5]

On February 22, law enforcement released an audio recording where the voice of the assailant,[7] though in some degree muffled, is heard to say, "Down the hill." It was at this news conference that officials credited the source of the audio and imagery to German's smartphone, and, further, regarded her as a hero for having had the uncanny foresight and fortitude to record the exchange in secret. Police indicated that additional evidence from the phone had been secured, but that they did not release it so as not to "compromise any future trial." By this time, the reward offered in the case was set at $41,000.[5]

Second link not available to me. First link copy pasted below. This was quite sad to hear. Sounds to me like he should have had an insanity plea/defence. If they find him not guilty, will he just be set free? That is a big risk to society there IMO.

DELPHI — The prosecution rested Thursday in the double murder trial of Richard Allen. Allen is charged with the murders of Abby Williams and Liberty German in February 2017. The day began with the state of Indiana calling its final witness at the Carroll County Courthouse.

The prosecution played eight recorded telephone conversations involving Allen. The conversations range from November 2022 to June 2023, when Allen was being held at the West Hill Correctional Facility. The prosecuting attorney outlined that Allen was making incriminating statements during those calls. Jurors heard Allen tell his wife Kathy that he killed Williams and German. Kathy would tell him, "No, you didn't it. You're not well. You didn't do those things."

In other telephone conversations, Allen was also heard saying he thought he did it (committed the murders of the girls,) but he also felt like he was losing his mind. He also expressed thoughts of killing himself.

Several of the phone calls were to Allen's mother Janice. He didn't talk specifically about the murders, but he did talk about he feels the system was killing him, and told them he was "losing his mind." He stressed to them that he would never do what he was accused of doing and that he felt mentally tortured.

Jurors also heard from state witness Brian Harshman. He is the Master Trooper in charge of analyzing more than 700 recorded phone calls where Allen was on the phone. Harshman also monitored his tablet, in-cell video, and Allen's review behavior reports.

Thursday morning on the stand, Harshman testified that in his estimation, the voice of the man known as "Bridge Guy" is the voice of Richard Allen.

A prosecuting attorney asked Harshman if he could identify Allen’s voice because he had so much experience monitoring all of Allen’s calls.

Harshman replied, "Yes.

The video of the girls walking on the Monon High Bridge was played in court again. The court heard the words, “Down the Hill."

Harshman was asked by the prosecutor whose voice he thought he heard.

Harshman simply stated, “Richard Allen.”

Phone call of November 14, 2022 (Richard Allen to his wife Kathy)

The phone call begins with Allen telling his wife Kathy that he’s sorry, but he just needs her to tell the investigators that he will tell them whatever they want. “Whatever they want me to say. I’ll tell them,” commented Allen on the recorded call.

As the audio played in court, Kathy Allen could be seen crying in the courtroom.

Allen's voice continued, “I don’t want you to worry about me. All I do is worry about you,” said Allen. He then referenced wanting to kill himself.

Richard Allen could be heard crying during the call. His wife Kathy attempted to console him by saying, “You’re okay. You’re okay,” she said. They then tell each other how much they love each other.

“I wish I could see you one more time. I’ll see you in the next life. I swear I will. You take care of the family for me,” Richard Allen told Kathy.

Phone call of April 2, 2023 (Richard Allen to his mother Janice)

Allen told his mother he couldn’t get in touch with Kathy because the phone system went down. His mother said it was very good to hear from him. They talked about storms that passed through Delphi, and they also talked about religion.

Allen asked his mother how long she had been going to church, and he wanted to know church she was attending. He cried as she talked and expressed his happiness to hear her answers.

Richard Allen told his mother on that call that he found God and turned his life to Christ on March 21, 2023. He told his mother that he hasn’t slept much, but would eventually. He really wanted to reach his wife. He ended the call with, “Love you too mom. Bye.”

Phone call of April 3, 2023 (Richard Allen to his wife Kathy.)

Investigators claim Allen made incriminating statements during this telephone call.

The phone call starts with Richard Allen saying, “Hey. Are you there?”

“Yes babe,” said Kathy.

“I did it,” said Allen.

“What?” questioned Kathy.

“No, I did it. I killed Abby and Libby,” said Allen.

“No, you didn’t,” replied Kathy.

“Yes, I did,” said Allen.

“No, you didn’t. You’re not feeling well,” pushed Kathy. “Why did you say that?”

“Because maybe, I think I did,” said Allen.

“No, you didn’t. They are messing with your mind,” replied Kathy. “Don’t you ever say you did it.”

“I think I did,” said Allen.

“No. Why would you say that?” she questioned again.

“I think I did. I’ll say I did. I don’t know,” said Allen.

Kathy's response was, “Exactly. You don’t know. There is something wrong. They’re trying to get you to say you did.”

“I want to apologize to the families,” Richard Allen continued.

“Just don’t talk anymore, okay,” Kathy.

“I’m sorry,” said Allen.

“Don’t talk anymore. I’m hanging up,” said Kathy.

The call ended.

There were other conversations where Richard Allen expressed he was losing his mind. He said he wanted to kill himself and that he wanted Kathy to understand that he, “Did it” (referring to killing Abby & Libby.)

Kathy repeatedly told her husband he wasn’t well.

“I think I lost my mind… You should know I did it, babe” Allen replied.

Allen added that he did not understand what was going on.

Kathy replied, “Neither do I."

There were several breaks during the afternoon session. One was to allow Special Judge Fran Gull to watch a 30-minute video in her chambers. The state hoped to enter the video as evidence, but the defense argued it was unaware of it and said it was irrelevant to the case. After watching the video, which reportedly showed Allen acting out in the Cass County Jail and becoming irate towards the guards, Judge Gull sided with the defense and did not allow it to be played.

The prosecution rested after Judge Gull ruled on the video, and the defense team for Richard Allen promptly called its first witness to the stand.

Neither defense witness was on the stand very long Thursday afternoon. The first witness was Cheyenne Mill. She said she was on the trail on February 13, 2017, the day Abby Williams and Libby German disappeared. She told the defense attorney she saw a man on the trail who was overweight and did not speak to hear when she said hi. She also testified to taking photos along the trail that day, and she shared those photos with police investigators.

The second witness was Teresa Liebert. She was shown a map of the area, and she pointed out the private road owned by her neighbor Brad Weber. She also pointed to the location of her home. Liebert said she saw someone who "appeared to be strange" standing near the mailboxes, but she could not see his face or what he was wearing.

Upon cross-examination, the prosecution asked, "So you are telling us around 8:30 AM on this day, you and your husband were coming home and saw a man you had never seen before, but you didn't see his face or a photo of him?"

Liebert replied, "Yes."

The prosecutor responded, "Thank you for coming in today. No further questions."

The jury had one question for Liebert. A juror clarified that there was no school on February 13, 2017, then wanted to know if the person by the mailboxes could have been a student.

She said, "No."

‘I did it. Do you still love me?’ Jurors hear Allen’s phone call ‘confessions’ in Delphi murders trial

Jurors heard several phone calls Richard Allen made to family members during Day 12 of testimony in the Delphi murders trial.
Two others briefly took the stand on Wednesday. Steve Mullin, a Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office investigator who previously served as Delphi’s police chief, discussed Allen’s Ford Focus SE and the limited number of similar vehicles registered in the Carroll County area.

Brad Weber, the owner of property across the crime scene, said he drove on an access road in his van around 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2017. That would’ve been around the time of the murders. In Allen’s confession recounted by Wala, he said a van spooked him, leading him to panic and kill the girls.

Before the jury entered the courtroom, the prosecution and defense sparred over some exhibits, with the state hoping to admit a few photos taken from Allen’s phone to show what he looked like before his arrest. Special Judge Fran Gull said she would take up the issue after lunch.
So RA mentioning the van and Weber confirming he returned home in his van at 2.30 pm seals it for me and hopefully for the jury too.

Delphi murders: Defense team calls first witnesses after prosecution rests

The first of the defense team’s witnesses took the stand late Thursday afternoon after the prosecution came to a rest in the highly publicized Delphi murders case.

For 12 days, the prosecution has called dozens of witnesses to the stand to present their case and lay out their belief that Richard Allen is the infamous “Bridge Guy” captured in cell phone footage from Libby German’s phone.

Prosecutors believe the girls encountered a man while out walking the bridge and were led down a hill to be raped before their killer panicked, decided to slash their throats and covered their bodies with sticks before fleeing the area.

An unspent round found between the girls’ bodies has been one of the main pieces of evidence against Allen. A firearm expert said the cartridge came from Allen’s gun.

Jurors also heard about dozens of confessions made by Allen, including one where he allegedly detailed how he led the girls down the hill intending to rape them before being spooked by a van and deciding to kill them. A neighbor told jurors how he was returning home around that same time near the crime scene – driving a white van.
I'd point out for all of the years in this case, not once has the word rape ever been used in reporting that I can recall. Here it is used twice now.

People over all these many years argued or debated if the crime was even sexually motivated. For me, of course it was. A man and two young girlsm, whether rthat's called sex or power, it is related. And then we never knew who or what or why then years later an arrest and such was still debated because, of course, there was still no info, evidence or anything shared that there was any DNA or SA, etc... Now we are through the P's case and still no proof or sign of SA. Although I think MOST know the intent and purpose and always have.

But now based on what? Allen's confessions right? News is saying intent to rape, etc... And the word rape is being used here now.

I don't really have a point, it just stuck out to me and so now it's okay to say that...

But again just based on argument and suppositions... I know and have always felt it was sexually motivated, if you can call rape and control and power sexual, it is but...

It's in the wee hours. I just I guess try to understand where news is coming from and what makes it okay now to say such... It is the case, I've never doubted it but..

And I also am just imagining what the girls' families are going through here. I mean can anyone imagine... And feel so awful for them.

Tom was turned today to a verdict. That is very significant to me. As even up to a couple of days ago as a juror, he said he couldn't convict. Yesterday but far more so today, gave him enough.

I didn't finish watching and will likely since now I can't sleep go back to hear more on it and catch up but for him to say that tells me a lot.

Just jumping off this post/news. Noticed the rape thing in reading it.

And just thinking of the families and all of this sh*t.

So also, before I forget, the defense already started? Wow. So prosecution wrapped in in what, less than two weeks or about two weeks? Which I think was their estimate.

Okay. I am either way overtired in the week hours or I swear I saw when I first looked at this that they did have a voice comparison expert, etc. I was reading it and it disappeared. Maybe it's me and I'm on a different post.

I will say on that though that i've said all along for a long time now, his voice is a dead on match. Not a shred of doubt when you hear the comparison.

I don't know where that link went or about such testimony but I saw it and now I don't.

So even though I don't see it now I saw it and yes the voice is DEAD ON and it's RA.

I was going to say so they DID do this and end with this, etc.. But now it changed or I am on the wrong post. Regardless....

To what is here now...

The women in his life... Mom and wife... Talk about a manipulator re RA... This comes through so clearly... BUT talk about the women in is life and the feeding and control themselves..

It is all so obvious imo.

To not go on or get bogged down, yeah the D so far is a nothing burger.

Of course they will shoot for the stars and get more sensational and try to do as they've done.

To this day, I can still see evidence of the leaks and influence and media and some still fall into it.

Their killer is right here. It's not some huge conspiracy. It is ALL THERE.

Well those two defence witnesses were completely irrelevant. One saw someone at 8.30 a.m. and the other at around 3.00 p.m. If the other D witnesses are as quick as those two we could have a verdict by end of next week.
I think they will start out with the more minor stuff and nothing sh*t and try to end with what the think is bigger. But it isn't gong to do it imo. This deal is sealed, has been for me for a long time even before any confessions honestly. It's his voice, there's more but it is HIS voice. Heard it a LONG time ago and 100 percent. And you know what is really sick, his wife and mother KNOW IT. HE77 I know it and don't know a one of them... It's overwhelmingly RA that killed these girls not just based on that, but on much. The D ried to do the blizzard ting but it is alli tis.

And there were definitely some mishaps and screw ups in this case but in the end, they found and have the right man.

Imo.

So RA mentioning the van and Weber confirming he returned home in his van at 2.30 pm seals it for me and hopefully for the jury too.
Many things for me, but the voice overall sealed it for me long ago. DEAD ON MATCH. But much else has and doe too. The van is further icing.

He has been TRYING TO CONFESS for God's sake and no one will let him. He probably as he said is happier than he'd ever been because he isn't living amongst, I'm sorry, but whatever the heck is wrong with this family...

"But you know that I done it right?"

Direct quote. RA to KA.

KA--"Don't say anything"

Then silence and low talking.

Tom has a LOT of every part of the conversations.

MORE.

He's toast and should be. I';d hope. For the girls and their families.

It's all there, despite the time despite the missteps. It is SO THERE.

Unless I missed it here, and I admit I totally may have, in listening to Tom there was a lot of back and forth about the confessions in court, and the D only wanting snippets of some played, full on others, and vice versa maybe by the P.

I think there is a TON we are unaware of re admissible and arguments as to what can come in, etc...

And I'll add in all I listened to today Gull has ruled for the D more times than will ever be reported, have any been reported? And against the P.

I will take inexperienced never been watching a trial in a courtroom before full coverage Tom any day of the week. I need to go to bed it is 4:11 a.m. but it's also quiet and just catching up... he has not taken a stance all along and is so much more than fair but today did it for him...

Google searches on RA's home computer the P wants in. Argument. By end of day never did hear what they were about...

Okay I thought I read most but can I ASK has NEWS reported any of THIS??????? Because I certainly never heard nor read any of this major SH*T.

This is from me, not Tom or anyting read or watched.

There is absoutely NO WAY Kathy Allen you do not know that is your hub on the bridge, that he is BG and that that is HIS VOICE.

NO WAY. ABSOLUTELY NO WAY. And in this case, I'm not even allowing for denial or not wanting to believe it as I can in some... NOPE.

Working backwards here.

When it is put together though with all else, it is pretty significant. And then the seeh through wheels or spokes or whatever.

And I am not doubting but haven't caught up with all, so you are saying not til cross exam in trial did they look for such?

I am seriously asking, I don't know. I have three days now of Tom's I am watching. I go to the new, especially with all of this more significant part of trial and then when time, go back and finish the rest. I read here, even though not real enamored with news, it catches me up on basics when I don't have time.

I will at some point watch all of the fullest coverage on this case even if it has to be after the fact.

I don't with all but do a fair amount on ones that I really want to now of. With Chad's, I wanted to hear his kids and made a point of going back to hear them testify, I wanted to hear Colby, and a few, even though I was working when such were live.

At least there was that option. In this one as of now, since NO recording, I will go back and finish all of Tom's.

Sorry, so back to the original point, are you saying this was just NOW done...?
Yes, I'm saying it was just now done. My issue is they ran a search on RA's exact model. I want to say it was a Ford Focus SE? There is more than just an SE.

Investigators say only one Ford Focus SE model was registered in Carroll County when Abby and Libby were killed

(This is from an IndyStar link. This seem to indicate it was checked in 2017. He admitted he was parked there so it had to be his vehicle.)

Investigator Steve Mullin testified that only one car was registered in Carroll County that appears to match the one seen on surveillance footage captured near the trails where Abby and Libby were killed: suspect Richard Allen’s vehicle.
Mullin said a search of Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicle records for Ford Focus cars registered in Carroll and surrounding counties in 2016-2017 returned 31 entries. He then said without duplicates, the search narrows to 18.
Mullin said the list of cars in the region narrowed even further, to eight, when searching for the number of Ford Focus ‘SE’ models, which is the type of car that police said Allen drove.
When asked how many Ford Focus SE cars were specifically registered in Carroll County during that time, Mullin replied “one.”
Jennifer Auger, one of Allen’s attorneys, argued the car captured on the Hoosier Harvestore surveillance footage does not show the registration or model. She further pointed out the trails are frequented by out-of-town visitors.

The state concluded the day by hearing from Brad Weber, a Carroll County resident who testified he was returning to his house, located near the trail, after clocking out of work at 2:01 p.m. on Feb. 13, 2017 – the day the girls were killed.
Weber estimated his commute takes 20-25 minutes to get home. He was shown a picture of a van, which he confirmed was his.
When the defense asked on cross-examination if he'd stopped anywhere, as he'd previously told police, Weber angrily shouted 'no'.

No other questions were asked before he was released from the witness stand.

Circumstantial evidence:

RA placed himself at the scene of the kidnappings prior to the murders.
His car on scene.
Unspent bullet with ejector marks matching his gun.
How many confessions are mentioned in court docs? Several, if I recall.

I'm interested in actual testimony personally.

More interested in a fair trial with good evidence that proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
I just found this looking for something else.

I personally want to remove the car evidence because IMO the prosecution botched that.

And add in the detail about Brad arriving home in his van during the murders. That is HUGE. That was a new detail in the confessions and then was vetted and proven to be true.

I'm interested in how the defense is going to put on their rebuttal case.

Okay. I wondered and wanted to know. That is a bit late in the game I would agree.

And where were their ducks in a row ahead of time on this kind of thing... I will say that and give that...

However, I do get that and caught it that D was driving in some days back on how common Ford Focuses were even with what features maybe in crossing someone and so they wisely imo went and looked at such because the D kind of showed they would be doing that...

Should they have done it ahead? I suppose, in a perfect world.

I actually drive a Focus. The smallest and cheapest model of a Ford I've ever had but I love her. She has two names... That's my business lol.

But for me the being able to see through the tires or rims is also huge and now we have no others in the county... Mine has no such add on and I'd say that's pretty rare to add to it.

And that's been pointed out too...

They don't vary a lot. There's a smaller engined one which of course they couldn't tell from a picture. All are smaller engines than some cars but there is one that is smaller than the normal focus too.

Where do you get they only ran the SE rather than the black Focus in general?

Not doubting just wondering, hadn't heard that. I am behind but trying to stay abreast of most. I fell asleep I think five times yesterday. Not sure what is going on with me, did watch a fair amount of Tom and then dozed off for like the how many-eth time yesterday or last night. I am up on all I think that is here, and a lot more than some honestly, because it is not ALL here, there is a lot more solid detail out there, and that's what I am trying to keep up with but can't entirely, but did not know about this search being for the specific model, etc.
