Police believe missing Winona woman’s disappearance ‘involuntary and suspicious’

Madeline Kingsbury, 26, has been missing since the morning of March 31 when she was last seen at her home in Winona. She was supposed to show up for work that morning but didn’t. Numerous calls and messages from friends and family went unanswered.

A $50,000 reward is now being offered for any information on Kingsbury’s whereabouts.

During the course of the investigation, Winona police know that Kingsbury returned to her residence in Winona after dropping her kids off at daycare around 8:15 a.m. on March 31 in a 2014 dark blue Chrysler Town and Country minivan.

The father of Kingsbury’s children said he left in her minivan around 10 a.m. and when he returned later in the day, she was not home.

Police believe a similar van was seen driving on County Road 12 and Highway 43 in Winona County and then southbound on Highway 43 through the eastern part of Fillmore County. Later, a van similar to Kingsbury’s drove back towards Winona on Highway 43. This occurred during the timeframe of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Police said the van has been parked in her residence since 1:30 p.m. on March 31 and they are not currently looking for the van.

Authorities located her phone, the jacket she wore earlier that morning and her wallet inside the home.

Nothing to date indicates that Kingsbury left on foot or in another vehicle.

Winona Police believe Kingsbury’s disappearance is suspicious and involuntary.

Law enforcement have searched near her residence and along Highway 43 in both Winona and Fillmore counties.

Winona Police have been assisted by other agencies and volunteers. Search efforts included people on foot, in vehicles, on water and air.

Winona resident Madeline “Maddi” Jane Kingsbury has been missing since March 31. Her family and friends are encouraging people in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and across the country to place blue light bulbs in and around their homes to light Maddi's way home in the weeks leading up to her birthday on June 1.

The family is also raising money for the Light the Way Home for Madeline event at www.gofundme.com/f/LTWHmadeline. These funds will specifically be used by community groups to turn as much of the area Maddi called home blue to keep building momentum and bring Madeline home.

Separately, the family has also been accepting donations to assist with search efforts and to help Maddi’s two children at www.gofundme.com/f/the-search-for-maddi.

WINONA, Minn. (FOX 9) - June 1 is Madeline Kingsbury's 27th birthday, and her family and friends are hoping those who may know something about her disappearance will be inspired to say something.

In a TikTok video, Megan Kingsbury addresses her missing sister, noting she's been missing for two months.

"Unfortunately I don't have any updates as far as her being found. We haven't been told any new information," she said in the video posted on Wednesday, May 31.

She said they're hoping that with it being Maddi's birthday, it will prompt people to call in any information they may know or have been withholding about her disappearance. Madeline went missing on March 31 and has not had any contact with friends or family since. The father of her children is believed to have been the last person to see her. Here's a timeline of her disappearance and search efforts, which are ongoing.

The Facebook page dedicated to finding Maddi says volunteers will be conducting a search along the Mississippi River shorelines in Minnesota and Wisconsin on Saturday, June 3. The search won't involve the water as "law enforcement and other volunteer groups have been actively searching the river."

(ABC 6 News) – Madeline Kingsbury’s children will remain in the care of her family, according to the prosecutor in the case.

Adam Fravel entered an admission Monday and Ms. Kingsbury was found to be in default. Therefore, the trial tomorrow has been taken off the calendar.

The court battle was to determine if the children are in need of protection or services (CHIPS), given the fact that their custodial mother is missing.

A disposition hearing is expected to be set for next week.

Such sad and tragic but also awesome news as is often the case. It seemed like forever but wasn't and sounds like they have her remains as well which the headline doesn't indicate. My guess is the homework they did ltie finding her remains and the area to him, whether by phone records, someone with info, etc.

This also should and hopefully will end the custody fight. Custody seemed to be his motive for her murder. Didn't work did it you dumb arse!!

May you rest i peace Madeline. I am guessing the remains are hers and they know it.

The ex-partner of Kingsbury, Adam Fravel, was taken into custody Wednesday evening after investigators say they found human remains. Fravel is listed on the jail roster page of the Winona County Sheriff's Office as being held on suspicion of second-degree murder. He has not yet been formally charged.

  • Date: June 8, 2023
  • Time: 1 p.m. CT
  • Location: Winona City Hall
  • Watch: A live player will be provided above or stream live on CBS News Minnesota

The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner's Office is now working to identify the remains.

Remains were found and he was arrested. I think we can safely assume they found her.

I can only hope at some point they can upgrade the murder charges to first degree. This seems premeditated to me... And he instantly thought he'd have custody and is fighting for custody is another reason I think that.

Hopefully his arrest and finding her puts an end to any further custody issues and the children remain with her family.

Human remains found in Minnesota on Wednesday have been identified as a Minnesota mother of two who had not been seen since March, police said Thursday.

Winona police Chief Tom Williams made the announcement during an afternoon news conference.

"This morning, the Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy," he told reporters. "Law enforcement has confirmed that the remains are those of Madeline Kingsbury."

The woman's father, David Kingsbury, said the family was "relieved that Madeline has been found after months of intensive searching and grateful for the extraordinary efforts by law enforcement, other first responders and volunteers."

"We’re certain that the correct person has been arrested, will be appropriately charged, and convicted of his crimes. Things are moving in the right direction there and we look forward to getting justice for Madeline. For right now we will mourn as a family and properly and respectfully lay her to rest," he added in a statement, according to NBC affiliate KARE of Minneapolis.

I saw this was going to be this exact situation. It was sadly obvious. And him all along. So obvious. Only one with motive. It's unfortunately a story we've heard too many times. This is so sad. I agree with others this was premeditated. I wish we had the death penalty.

Agree entirely. 100 percent.

WINONA, Minn. (FOX 9) - Adam Fravel, the ex-partner of Madeline Kingsbury, was charged with murder just days after her body was discovered in a wooded area off of a remote stretch of Highway 43 in Mabel, Minnesota.

Prosecutors charged Fravel in Winona County court Friday with two counts of second-degree murder, just two days after Maddi’s body was discovered. He made his initial court appearance at 11 a.m. via Zoom and is scheduled to return to court for an omnibus hearing on July 20.

Fravel ‘infatuated’ with Gabby Petito case

According to court records, police interviewed Fravel on April 1 and April 2 about Maddi’s disappearance. Fravel allegedly told police his relationship with Maddi was not working, and they had separated. He claimed Maddi told him she was in a relationship with someone else about two weeks earlier, and she was trying to find an apartment for her and the children.

Police informed Fravel about a report claiming he told Maddi if she "did not listen up, that she would end up like Gabby Petito," charges read.

Fravel admitted to being "infatuated" with the Gabby Petito case, in which a 22-year-old woman went missing after traveling with her boyfriend around the country. Petito had been strangled to death and her remains were found near a park in Wyoming, according to charges. However, Fravel claimed he was just trying to make a joke.

The day Maddi was found

A Fillmore County deputy was searching a rural area next to a public gravel road approximately one mile from Highway 43. The deputy found human remains in wrapped in what appeared to be a gray fitted bedsheet that had been closed with black tape. The medical examiner noted there was a knotted towel around Maddi's head and neck. The preliminary autopsy report determined the manner and cause of death as homicide and homicidal violence, according to court records.

Fravel was arrested later that night on June 7 in Mabel, Minnesota. He remains in custody at Winona County jail.

Fravel appeared before District Judge Mary Leahy Friday and ordered bail to be set at $1 million provided he not use mood-altering substances and have no contact with Kingsbury's family.

Phillip Prokopowicz, a former Dakota County prosecutor who is leading the case against Fravel, had asked for an unconditional $2 million dollar bail, citing a potential 306-month sentence for Fravel if he is convicted and public safety, including Fravel's two children.

Fravel's lawyer, Zach Bauer, had argued for a much lower bail that included GPS monitoring.

Leahy, in accordance with a previous family court order, agreed to let Fravel have supervised visits with his children in a secure facility.

The children's lives had been upended, Leahy said, and she wanted to "keep a level of consistency" for the young children.

<snip>

She had been wrapped in a grey fitted bed sheet that had been closed with black "Gorilla" tape. Investigators found a roll of the same type of tape at the couple's Winona residence and one of their mattress' appeared to missing the same type of sheet.

Fravel told law enforcement he traveled to that area the day Kingsbury went missing. Police were able to find video evidence that shows Fravel traveling to and from Mabel that day.

This man is one of the stupidest perps I've seen in a bit and even over time and we've seen a few. Their bed sheet, their gorilla tape, she ends up right on a route he admits to taking and so much more. DUMB.

Whether she was seeing someone else or not, I'd just say this came from him so who knows if true or not although it very well may be true.

It bothers me that the charge said intended to cause death and yet it was not premeditated... Huh? He only has to intend in that second or two doesn't he?

I wonder if they will upgrade the charge later on...

The Gabby Petito remark also indicates it was something that crossed his mind. Definitely not enough on its own maybe but put together with it all, it seems to indicate if she left him and did not come back to him, etc. that this was his thinking of what he would do...

She was the breadwinner and he didn't work I'm hearing on Grizzly. Total loser most likely, living off her and doing nothing. Why were her kids going to day care if he did not work? Just starting to watch her coverage of it all, don't know if I'll get through it.

I don't know all the details yet, so maybe this will end up not possible, but I suspect the driveway or farm or whatever he turned around in may be where he dumped her and they found her... If so, he was dumb enough to tell them this story about stopping to turn around there and a b.s. story that he packed the wrong things to store at his parents, never going all the way to his parents on that trip. I'm thinking because he simply went to some area he knew out that way to dump her and then concerned they could show he didnt go all the way to hsih parents on that trip, he shared that and the bogus reason for it.

For anyone like me who hasn't read it all or watched the PC, here is Grizzly's video on it all. From what she has said she will have it all in this show and it was filmed with the PC upcoming so sure she had that on as well.

Neighborhood cameras and he is on them changing license plates. He then admits to stopping at a gas station which shows the wrong plate is on the van. This man not only is no rocket scientist, I don't think he knows his ABCs or 123s. DUMB as they come.

Former partner of Madeline Kingsbury to keep parental rights in custody case

Adam Fravel, the former partner of Madeline Kingsbury, appeared in court Wednesday morning for a custody hearing of their two children.

It was decided that Fravel will keep his parental rights, but visitations are suspended while he is in jail.

The county official serving as the legal guardian of the Kingsbury children said both are doing well. They added that Madeline’s parents are doing the best they can to address and care for the children’s mental health.

Judge Leahy denied the motion filed by Kingsbury’s parents to end his parental rights. The Judge believes custody should be handled in the open Family Court case and not through the child protection order.
