Police believe missing Winona woman’s disappearance ‘involuntary and suspicious’

Madeline Kingsbury, 26, has been missing since the morning of March 31 when she was last seen at her home in Winona. She was supposed to show up for work that morning but didn’t. Numerous calls and messages from friends and family went unanswered.

A $50,000 reward is now being offered for any information on Kingsbury’s whereabouts.

During the course of the investigation, Winona police know that Kingsbury returned to her residence in Winona after dropping her kids off at daycare around 8:15 a.m. on March 31 in a 2014 dark blue Chrysler Town and Country minivan.

The father of Kingsbury’s children said he left in her minivan around 10 a.m. and when he returned later in the day, she was not home.

Police believe a similar van was seen driving on County Road 12 and Highway 43 in Winona County and then southbound on Highway 43 through the eastern part of Fillmore County. Later, a van similar to Kingsbury’s drove back towards Winona on Highway 43. This occurred during the timeframe of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Police said the van has been parked in her residence since 1:30 p.m. on March 31 and they are not currently looking for the van.

Authorities located her phone, the jacket she wore earlier that morning and her wallet inside the home.

Nothing to date indicates that Kingsbury left on foot or in another vehicle.

Winona Police believe Kingsbury’s disappearance is suspicious and involuntary.

Law enforcement have searched near her residence and along Highway 43 in both Winona and Fillmore counties.

Winona Police have been assisted by other agencies and volunteers. Search efforts included people on foot, in vehicles, on water and air.

This man is a slacker and I'm sorry but i doubt he is after his children out of love for his children. I am glad they suspended visitations, I was not a fan of the first decision that thought the kids needed the continuity of continuing to see him on supervised visits while in jail. I think that would do more harm than good.

Things aren't ideal but they are young so more likely to rebound well especially if they hopefully know little as they were in day care during this heinous crime. I wonder if her family is keeping them in their day care, that would give them a familiar routine I'd think.

She worked at home mostly I think and he did not work so the fact there was day care leads me to believe she couldn't even count on him to watch the kids while she worked. Abusive, a slacker, and all around loser and a murderer of his children's mother. Allegedly.

She had something to offer, he has/had nothing to offer.

Why is it it goes this way so often in this world. Sad.

Custody battle for the children of Madeline Kingsbury comes to an end

The custody battle that began between the parents of Madeline Kingsbury and the father of her children has been waged ever since he was arrested and charged in connection with Madeline’s murder. That battle seems to have finally come to an end, with a decision being made Thursday.

Madeline’s parents have come to an agreement with Adam Fravel, the father of the kids, to allow them to have sole legal and physical custody of the children.

Fravel’s visitation rights will be suspended while he is in custody.

Another part of that agreement--Winona County will close the child protection case that was opened after Madeline initially disappeared.

Winona County has also been dismissed as the children’s guardian while their grandparents maintain temporary guardianship.

Thank goodness although in no way do I think Fravel did it with the thought of what is best for his children. It got CPS to stop and the more he fights/fought it, the more it shows one of his motives for her murder imo. Plus he didn't stand a chance and has a lot bigger things to worry about.

Happy though that her parents get to have them even though things are far from right in their world with the loss of Madeline and charges against the father.

Neighborhood cameras and he is on them changing license plates. He then admits to stopping at a gas station which shows the wrong plate is on the van. This man not only is no rocket scientist, I don't think he knows his ABCs or 123s. DUMB as they come.
I agree. He is a complete moron. Which I am glad. It got him caught. If he got pulled over for being drunk, And he wasn't. Say your ABC's. Uhhh...A,B,C,D,E,F,K,J, Something. Count backwards from 100. 😳🫡🤔😣

I agree. More harm than good. I'm sure they already witnessed many instances of abuse. Now he is charged with murdering their mother. It would be very confusing to them. At that age, They can't process it. Like say a teenager.I hope they can get the mental help they need. This will effect them. What they've seen without a doubt of abuse. And coming to terms with this as psychiatrists seem fit. The children are always stuck in the middle and are victims. Always. Their mom is gone. Dad is in jail for killing her. Their lives are turned upside down. Even if given a stable life with family members.

I think I said a few times in this thread he may be one of the stupidest I've seen in awhile. They didn't even have to connect dots, the dots were connected by him for them. Absolutely heartbreakingly sad this hard working young mother who was getting away from him is dead. He though is almost laughable except he IS and will always be a MURDERER who crossed the line and that's ALL he is. And a DUMB one.

And hard on the grandparents. They love and will love those children and do their best but it is hard to do that at an older age, raise them, and an additional component of having kids that had a mother murdered and their dad imprisoned. They didn't ask for this but stepped up as anyone would (any good person) and will do it.

I thank God at LEAST the kids were in day care when he did this and didn't witness it. However, I am sure as you said they witnessed plenty of other things.

Prosecutors to seek aggravated sentence in Adam Fravel’s murder case

Winona County prosecutors have filed a notice of intent to seek aggravated sentencing in the case against Adam Fravel; the man charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Madeline Kingsbury.

In their filing, prosecutors outlined their reasoning for seeking an aggravated sentence, citing the fact Madeline’s body appeared to have been concealed. They base their argument on the fact that Madeline was found in an isolated area, wrapped in a sheet, partially encapsulated by a culvert, and appeared to have been covered by wooden debris.

They cite findings from a previous Minnesota Supreme Court ruling, State v. Hicks, which found that “the concealment of a homicide victim’s body, in of itself, may be an aggravating factor under sentencing guidelines”.

If convicted, the judge will consider several factors to determine Fravel’s sentence, including his previous criminal record, arguments from both the defense and prosecutors and statewide sentencing guidelines.

The statutory maximum sentence for second-degree murder in Minnesota is 40 years.

Fravel, 29, is scheduled to appear in court on July 20th.

Well good. It seems there are some who are trying to show they know sentencing is not appropriate these day and use what they can to add to it, employ what they can, etc. In MN no less. I'd vote for these folks if they stick with it and give him the most they can. I don't doubt they'd prefer it be clear first degree either.

She was a cute young mother, who should be with her children right now as I type this out. I hope he gets the max. I really do.

I do too. A mother, a working one who likely took care of her kids well and supported his lazy arse. One day she is alive and has a family and an extended family even if the relationship with him was ending and the next day she is dead at too young of an age.

We see so many cases one has to stop a moment sometimes and realize just how huge this is and how bad those that murder are. Her family I am sure is devastated and now get to raise grandchildren who lost both parents.

He deserves the stiffest sentence and I wish it was first degree as I think he likely did plan this although it was a stupid plan and he was far from bright about it, I believe it was planned and intentional.

Hearing delayed two months in Maddi Kingsbury murder case

An omnibus hearing, where a plea is normally entered, had been scheduled for Wednesday but both the prosecution and defense attorneys asked the judge to postpone it.

In asking to delay the omnibus hearing, one of his defense attorneys said they expect another 400 pages of discovery to be disclosed and the prosecution says the results of new testing done by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension won’t be back until mid-August.

The judge has now set the omnibus hearing for September 22.

IF there is a real reason for delays, I get it. It sounds like there may be here. On the other hand this is just a hearing, not a trial. I guess we will see if the further discovery indicates him further, will he then plead guilty and that's why they needed the time... Doubt it but it's a recent case so not a ton of delays yet but wouldn't doubt it will continue...

He really shouldn't waste the time and money for the State but he will. He was so dumb and so obvious what a waste of resources to take this to trial.

A vibrant young hard working mother alive one day and dead the next with a trail of more than bread crumbs but giant dense bagel crumbs. Past that. I don't have the words. Oh we know he didn't mean to draw them a map or realizing he was doing so, but he did so basically anyhoow and is probably still hitting his head and falling over in a thud :thud:If he has even realized his own stupidity. Debatable.

I'm not just talking of the travel either, I am talking about every obvious thing that pointed to him from the start in this case.

She was a mom, hard working and 26 for goodness sakes! LOSER. CREEP. DUMB POS.

He is an idiot. It's my opinion he planned it. But not very well. It was his own stupidity that pointed to him. GOOD!!!

I think he planned it too, not sure how long ahead but long enough to not be questionable that it was intentional and planned. But yes, a total traceable obvious idiot. He drew them a map of his plans with his crayons. Or gave them the easiest dot to dot of any case I've seen recently.

Warrants offer new details in murder case against Madeline Kingsbury's ex-boyfriend

Just a few weeks before she disappeared, Madeline Kingsbury told a friend whom to blame if something ever happened to her.

"Know that Adam did it," Kingsbury allegedly said. "I would never leave my kids."

That is just one piece of a trove of new details recently made public after a Winona County judge last week unsealed search warrants in the case against Adam Fravel, Kingsbury's ex-boyfriend and father of her two children who is charged with her murder.

Court records show friends and family knew for some time that Kingsbury and Fravel were in an abusive relationship, one Kingsbury was trying to get out of. Several people told police Kingsbury said Fravel had beaten her in the past, according to search warrant affidavits.

One person told police Kingsbury said Fravel had taken their children in the past and had not told her where they were, and he had recently been threatening and assaulting her.

Kingsbury had allegedly told people she never reported Fravel to authorities because she didn't "want the kids to get in the middle of it," but had asked for advice on how to get out of her on-and-off-again relationship. She and Fravel had started couples therapy at the end of 2022, documents state.

That changed when Kingsbury began seeing another man she planned to live with. Court records show friends told police Kingsbury had applied for a townhouse in Goodview, just northwest of Winona, the week before she disappeared and had told Fravel she would move out of the home she shared with him. One friend told police she knew Kingsbury was excited but afraid to see how Fravel would respond.

Kingsbury's mother and sister told police Fravel was emotionally abusive and controlling — he would insist Kingsbury not talk to her new boyfriend while he was around and demanded to see text messages between the two.

Warrants show several friends and family told police Fravel reportedly told her, "If you don't listen, you'll end up like Gabby Petito," the social media influencer who was slain by her boyfriend while traveling in 2021. Fravel later told police he meant it as a joke.

The unsealed warrants also lay out law enforcement suspicions that Fravel may have tried to get rid of evidence. Police looked over camera systems at Kingsbury's home and Fravel's parents' home, both of which he had access. Cameras at Kingsbury's home appeared to have been ripped off the walls and their memory cards removed, while network data after March 30 appears to have been deleted.

During an April 7 search of Kingsbury's home, police found a computer tower and laptop in a dumpster as well as what appeared to be a burned computer device in a nearby fire pit. Court documents also show Fravel turned off location data and usage history on his cellphones.

On April 9, when it was about 70 degrees, a neighbor of Fravel's parents captured footage of Fravel dressed in dark-colored clothes, including a stocking cap and jacket, driving an ATV on the property, traveling with a shovel.

Police seized Fravel's ATV and the shovel the next day, according to court documents. Cadaver dogs, which are trained to alert or indicate human remains, reacted to the ATV's bed and the shovel's spade.

Fravel's next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 22.

More evidence of sheer stupidity, all of it. The last several paragraphs particularly so.
