Maya “May” Millete, 39, was last seen Thursday evening in her Chula Vista home near the San Miguel Ranch area, according to her loved ones. Family and friends said her car is still at her home and her phone has been going to voicemail since her disappearance.

Hospitals, jails and morgues have been contacted by the woman’s kin, but they said she has not been found at any of those locations.

Maya and Larry Millete are high school sweethearts married for 21 years with three children — ages 4, 9, and 11.

Maya has been missing from her Chula Vista home since last week. Millete says they had argued the night before.

"We had problems this year, up and downs," Millete told ABC 10News.

He said his wife has left before for the night to blow off steam, but he became worried when she didn't show up for their daughter's birthday on Sunday.

"If she didn't have her car, a friend would have to pick her up. That's the only reason I was like, 'maybe she's wine tasting or hiking with a friend,'" says Millete.

Maya works as a defense contractor at Naval Base San Diego and didn't show up for work on Monday.

"I called her boss, she didn't even log in. And that's the other alarming part, because work for her is like a party ... that's her outlet," Millete says.

Millete says he will continue to search, anxiously waiting.

More evidence in my mind that he could kill his wife.
Yeah, he's not real bright is he? I mean he is basically showing people what he is when he gets caught doing this... He should be trying to look like loving dad, loving husband... Not that I think he could pull it off...

Maya Millete encouraged to go to safe house before she disappeared, friend says…

Maya Millete's friends were so concerned about her safety in the weeks and months leading up to her disappearance in January that they gave her access to a safe house if she ever found herself in danger.

"I gave her an address that if she needed to go to, she could go to. She had just told me she was going to need to use that address," one of Maya's friends, who asked to remain anonymous for her safety, told Fox News.

"I had given it to her in person, but I told her, ‘You’re not taking the paper, you’re not writing it down, I’m not texting it to you.’ And I said, 'This is where you can go if you need to go. Memorize this address, and this is the code to get in.’"

Maya disappeared from her Chula Vista home on Jan. 7, the same day that she made an appointment with a divorce attorney after at least a year of marital problems with her husband, Larry Millete.

A friend of mine was telling me about a bad relationship her daughter is in. I tried to wake her up and tell her that she needs to look into domestic violence organizations because he might actually hurt her permanently! Even now, people are still not getting it.

Saw report about this on local tv last night. Made me so sad that Maya is one of the statistics bringing this about. But perhaps the loss of her life will save at least one other, if not more.

So sad

This issue is so complex that what is the fix? Maya had realized and was leaving so I will give her that but as we all know that is the most dangerous time. Not to make it sexist but I don't think men can ever completely understand or see the signs nor have the instinct for it. I don't mean they can't be totally against DV and be very well trained, I just think maybe in incidents or DV calls sending someone, a female who sadly may have even experienced it and then went on to train and help others, might be a start. The Petito case certainly comes to mind with this issue too.

The thing is imo you can't fix those that stay and some that even maybe play into the dynamic of the abuser. I am sure LE and prosecutors get tired of they charge, have a case and are willing to proceed but then the woman goes back or begs to have the charges dropped against her partner. It is hard to imagine ever stopping people from getting in abusive relationships or finding themselves in one and then convincing them to get out.

Personally I get outraged it is called DV. I get it but I also feel it is a way to differentiate from "serious" assault. These charges are often pled down to nothing or little to nothing and it also keeps those more serious crime statistics down.

And I can't help but often think it is because it is predominantly women and court and there are still areas very old school and the ol' boys club. I think lending to it also is the fact that underneath many think the woman is dumb to stay and brought it on herself...

Just some of my thoughts on DV. More awareness is great but I think it is going to take a lot more than that.

**And I want to make it clear that I know men are abused too but we do know it is predominantly women and children when it comes to DV. That's just a fact.

Search for missing Chula Vista mother heads east to the desert

Teams are concentrating on desert areas east of San Diego in their ongoing search for the remains of Chula Vista mother, Maya Millete.
News 8 traveled to the Anza-Borrego desert this past weekend for the search effort by Team Maya.
Fish Creek was where Maya’s relatives fanned out with about 30 search volunteers Saturday, armed with metal detectors, shovels and a drone.

“We are searching for a needle in a haystack,” said Richard Drouaillet, Maya’s brother-in-law.
Drouaillet said the missing woman would off-road in the area with her husband Larry Millete, who is now behind bars and charged with his wife's murder.
It's been almost 10 months since the mother of three was last seen.
“Honestly, at this point, we're probably just looking for clothing and bones, as hard as that is to say,” said Drouaillet.
The San Diego County District Attorney said at a news conference following Millete’s arrest that the husband would have been driving a black, Lexus SUV with a personalized plate, MAYLANI, on January 8. He is suspected of dumping his wife's body approximately 2.5 hours from the family's home in Chula Vista.

“We're moving eastward. All that area about two and half hours from Larry's house. That's where we're focusing our searches from now on,” said Drouaillet.
The Milletes went camping with their three children and relatives in the Glamis Beach sand dunes area the weekend before she went missing, which was over New Year’s weekend. Court records show the family also went to Glamis over the Thanksgiving 2020 holiday.
News 8 mapped out four Border Patrol checkpoints equipped with license plate reading cameras.

Sister of Maya Millete petitions for guardianship of missing woman’s 3 children

The sister of Maya Millete has filed a petition in San Diego probate court seeking temporary guardianship and, eventually, permanent custody of the missing mother’s three children.

The filing on Nov. 2 by Maricris Drouaillet comes two weeks after Maya’s husband, Larry Millete, was arrested and charged with his wife’s murder.

Drouaillet wrote to the court that the children could move in with her family – including her own children, ages 16 and 18 – in Moreno Valley in Riverside County.

“The children would be able to share a bedroom while we work on renovating our living room to accommodate the Millete children,” the petition stated. “If permanent guardianship is granted, we intend on moving to a larger residence in the same area.”

The filing also indicated Drouaillet intends to seek out therapy for the three children, and place them on her own health insurance policy if guardianship is granted.

“It may also be beneficial to put some distance between the Children and the media frenzy in San Diego County that has ensued as a result of the circumstances alleged to have occurred between Larry and Maya,” the petition concluded.

Currently, the couple's three children, ages 5, 10 and 11, are living with the husband's parents in Chula Vista, according to the court records.

News 8 spoke to San Diego family law attorney, Anton Georghiou, who is not involved in the case. He said the court needs to make a ruling on guardianship soon because the husband is in custody.

“It may be a year, it may be two years before the case goes to trial. He may end up sitting in jail for that entire time, and you can't just leave the children in legal limbo while dad is sitting in jail,” said Georghiou.

In the petition, Drouaillet said the paternal grandparents have not allowed her side of the family to visit Maya’s children since the Chula Vista mother went missing on January 7.

The court records allege Larry’s parents let the father telephone his children from jail, in violation of a criminal protective order and, “asked the older children to read him the news headlines about his criminal case, instructed the older Children [to] watch the movie ‘Shot Caller,’ which is Rated-R, and spoke poorly about our side of the family.”

Above BBM. I was so hoping they could use this!! I don't care if the parents were even clueless (which I highly doubt), they are under their care and he was NOT to be calling them and he did so for hours on end. Bit mistake finally at least in one regard by Larry and likely by his parents. I personally think this alone is BIG to have a reason for a chance in custody.

Maya would be I think proud of her sister and BIL. I don't envy their load though. They have been through a lot and continue to have to deal with trying to find her, they kept it in the news as much as they could throughout no answer the past year, now a legal process of Larry and charges for Maya's murder and fighting for custody while maintaining their own lives and taking care of their own children. The strength they have shown is amazing imo.

‘He is a danger to the community’ | Bail request denied for Larry Millete

The bail review hearing was held on Thursday for Larry Millete who is accused in the killing of his wife, May “Maya'' Millete.

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — On Thursday, the judge concluded that Larry Millete is "a danger to the community" and denied his request for bail.

The bail review hearing was held on Thursday for Larry Millete who is accused in the killing of his wife, May “Maya'' Millete.

Thursday’s court appearance comes after prosecutors filed a court motion aimed at keeping him in jail. In the filing, Deputy District Attorney Christy Bowles argues if Larry Millete is released on bail, he might try to kill a man who allegedly had an affair with his missing wife.

The motion filed October 21 and entitled “People’s request to deny bail” contained new information in the case including quotes of statements she allegedly made to friends in 2020 about her husband.

“Larry does have a scary temper... nothing the people outside of the family have seen,” Maya is quoted as saying last year. “I don't think he would hurt me, but I think he would hurt the kids to get back at me."

The prosecutor wrote that Larry Millete would not only be a danger to his children – as well as a flight risk – if released on bail; but he might also try to murder the man he suspected of having an affair with his wife, May.

“The defendant told May's brother he was willing to pay $20,000... to possibly kill the man involved in the affair with May," the motion stated.

News 8 is not identifying the man involved in the alleged affair, and he has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

But prosecutors clearly believe the man's life may be in danger if Larry Millete gets out on bail.

"The defendant sent photographs of the man to the spell casters indicating he had done research… to hurt or cause the death of the man he believed was the cause of his broken relationship with May,” the prosecutor wrote.

Millete’s attorney, Bonita Martinez, did not respond to a News 8 request for comment and she has not yet filed a written response in court.

Thank goodness. This Judge came right down on him and his phone privileges after it was found he was talking to his children against orders. Now he calls him a danger and denies bail. Both seem like the right decisions to me and I wish we saw that in every case when it is called for.

Hopefully the guardianship will go to Maya's sister as well as I think there is plenty of cause to change it from Larry's parents.

They probably don’t believe he murdered his wife. What is wrong with these parents? They’re turning out criminals with their ability to stick their heads in the sand.

The parents of Chris Watts, Brian Laundrie, Scott Peterson, now Larry Millette here just to name a few...

It would be nice to see just one time the parents of the perp do what is right and I believe in their heart know is right... I also don't believe Maya's family would keep the kids from seeing Larry's parents IF not advised to by counselors it would be detrimental to the children. I don't think Maricris would stop a relationship with the other grandparents nor probably even Larry with his children unless recommended for the children's sake. Larry and his parents have proved they will damage the relationship and opinions of Maya's family in the children's eyes and influence them as well.

Scum.

SAN DIEGO — The husband charged with murdering Chula Vista mother, Maya Millete, has filed an objection to his sister-in-law taking over guardianship of his three children.
Larry Millete – who remains in custody – and his parents, Benito and Judith Millete, filed the objection on Nov. 8, stating, “May Millete, the children’s mother has not been served with the Petition for Appointment of Guardianship.”

How maddening. With the ways today of giving the defendant every chance and bending over backwards for them, it wouldn't surprise me if they grant this and say it has to go to publication even though he is charged with her murder. They are buying time/hoping to cause a delay or trying to, that much is clear or hope to.

I don't see why a neighbor's opinion would carry much weight, although changing schools and neighborhood might carry some. However, children in school would know the father of these children is charged with their mother's murder and that can't be pleasant for them.

I wonder location-wise how far the grandparents are from Maya's sister or if necessary, she could accommodate running them to the same school at least for now which I wouldn't be sure is best anyhow. Sadly, it is Larry M. who caused his OWN children's situation. It seems though nowadays crazy things go on with again, all chances being given to the defendant beyond what is fair. In my opinion, even though hard for them, they need to get the children away from Larry M. and his parents, he at least it seems is telling them their mother ran off on them and this will be his defense most likely too....? He also places them in fear of what will be done to him in jail/prison like when he tells a child to watch something on TV depicting such to cause them more damage/harm/fear for HIS safety.

The judge in his case came right down on him over the calls to his children but is it the same judge for the custody case? No idea. There is a point I guess about changing schools and such but what is the lesser of two evils, these children's lives have changed and will continue to do so most likely and in the long run, they are better off I think with Maya's family if Larry's parents are going to do as they did, like allowing phone calls against court order, they clearly are dictated to by their son and not the best interests of the children. This man is poisoning these children imo but he also is not convicted yet BUT he uses his children and that is evident. What is also evident is his parents will do anything to allow the children contact with their father against court order and this alone should be one would hope enough reason to grand the petition of Maya's sister, one can hope. The lives of these children have changed and will change again because of what their father did. Not much can be done about that except hopefully a judge realizing in the long run they are better off with Maya's family and one can only hope they will overcome this with time and help. Just my opinion of course.

I went on a weekend trip with some friends to Glamis back in the 80s. I couldn’t stand that place! I got the worst sunburn I’ve ever had in all my life. All it was is nothing and sand. I can’t imagine in my wildest dreams trying to find somebody buried there. However, if it’s like it was then, there’s a lot of off-road vehicles and maybe at some point they’ll see something.

'There is no winner or loser' | Judge says Millete children will remain with paternal grandparents

This is soooo wrong to me. THEY LET THESE children have contact with the dad against court orders. Lots of it by their twisted son.

I get the man is not convicted. I get the grandparents are not him. I get the children may feel safe there and it is more routine for them or close to home, etc. I get the children should be put first in such decisions. HOWEVER, where is the logic and common sense, convicted or not? Why can't a judge look at the facts, he told his kid to watch a show about how daddy would likely be treated in prison and what he would go through... They are going to let this continue and their minds turn more away and be poisoned....

These kids are in a horrible situation regardless. I don't think there is a perfect answer BUT this decision isn't the best of them imo.

At least they have regular visits on her side... Maybe, just maybe, once they get exposure to their mother's side of the famly and used to it, the judge may revisit it and perhaps that is what she is thinking... And to be fair, I don't know, there are probably things we don't know and can't know... This is so unfair to Maya's family, just add salt and more salt and more salt to the wounds. However, it is about the children and where is best... I don't know. Just SAD.

The search for the remains of Maya Millete will continue over the long, Thanksgiving weekend near the Glamis sand dunes.

But family members will have to return to Chula Vista on Sunday for their weekly visitation with the missing mother’s three children.

“We had our fingers crossed that maybe the courts would let us see the kids for the [Thanksgiving] holiday, but I don't think it's going to happen,” said Richard Drouaillet, Maya’s brother-in-law.
