Nevada woman disappears from Walmart, brother says video shows masked man forcing himself into her car

The brother of a missing Nevada woman, who disappeared Saturday from a Walmart parking lot, said chilling surveillance video shows a man force his way into her car before driving away.

Naomi Irion, 18, of Fernley in Northern Nevada, was last seen about 5 a.m. at the store’s parking lot, according to a Wednesday statement from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Irion’s four-door sedan was later found in an industrial area in Fernley, and a suspect believed to be driving a dark, newer model Chevrolet High Country pickup may know her whereabouts, police said.

Irion’s older brother, Casey Valley, 32, told NBC News on Thursday that surveillance footage from the Walmart shows a man wearing a face mask and a hoodie walk to the parking lot from the direction of a dirt lot, circle his sister’s car and then force his way in.

“He circled around the parking lot maybe to make sure there were no witnesses,” Valley said. “He came up behind the car and forced his way into the driver’s side of the car. Maybe her door was unlocked. He either said or did something to make her move to the passenger seat and then he drove her car away into an unknown direction.”

Representatives with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office could not be immediately reached Thursday to corroborate Valley’s account. Valley also told NBC affiliate KRNV in Reno about the video.

The sheriff’s office is expected to hold a press conference about the case later Thursday.

Troy Driver ordered to competency hearing, dismissal motion found 'premature'
The State of Nevada has ordered Troy Driver to participate in a competency evaluation before a trial into the kidnapping, murder and sexual assault of Naomi Irion begins.

Fernley Justice Court Bailiff Ted Bolzle released a set of documents Wednesday detailing the next steps determining if Troy Driver is competent to stand trial, following his attorneys motion for dismissal last month.

Troy Driver was officially ordered to appear before the Third Judicial District Court on August 5. The date of the examination has not been released, but he is next scheduled to appear in court on September 13 in person.

Lyon County District Attorney, Stephen B. Rye, then submitted opposition to Driver's defense teams motion to dismiss and for modification of briefing schedules amid an argument that Driver's trial should have a venue change from Lyon County to Churchill County.

He is competent enough to abduct her. Competent enough to assault her. Competent enough to murder her. Competent enough to not come forward but hide his deed. I am so SICK of this kind of SH*T. He is a danger and menace to society. PUT HIM AWAY and THROW AWAY the KEY. Any soft sobby hearts can help him then to change his ways or try to. This young lady was going to work and holding a job and doing her part. She was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and MURDERED. POOR HIM who can't understand!! BULL!!

Judge temporarily suspends case in Fernley's Naomi Irion kidnapping, killing

A rural justice of the peace has suspended proceedings in justice court for a man accused of kidnapping and killing a Fernley teenager until a state judge can decide whether he should undergo a competency examination.

Canal Township Justice of the Peace Lori Matheus originally ordered Troy Driver of Fallon to appear in Lyon County District Court for a competency hearing before a preliminary hearing is scheduled in her Fernley courtroom next month.

Her new ruling says that state law requires her to suspend further proceedings “if a doubt arises as to the competency of the defendant.”

“The district court can make the necessary orders regarding any required examinations in this case,” Matheus wrote Aug. 22.

Meanwhile, Driver's lawyers continue to argue he can’t legally be tried in Lyon County for the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Naomi Irion, which occurred in neighboring Churchill County.

Matheus earlier set a preliminary hearing Sept. 13-15 to determine if there’s enough evidence to bound him over for trial. She also had planned to hear jurisdictional arguments then.

It's funny how someone says the same thing and others like one comment. But not the other. It shows who likes and doesn't like who.

FERNLEY, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — The man accused of kidnapping and killing 18-year-old Naomi Irion last year was back in court Friday, and his lawyers want to close the courtroom and seal the record to the public and all media outlets. They said they plan to file a motion soon.

<snip>

Also at Friday's hearing, Driver's legal team said they are also planning to file a motion to change the venue, due to a lack of jurisdiction. They make that argument because Naomi was kidnapped in Lyon County, but her body was found in Churchill County. A judge will make a ruling on this, as well as other motions that will be filed in this case.

Various dates for the next status hearing were also discussed due to the construction inside the Yerington courthouse that may impact operations and hearings. However, Driver's next hearing is set on July 27 and 28, but if these dates are impacted by the construction, it would be moved to August 2 and 3.

Gee doesn't he know the new trend is to stand mute and get the attention for it Brian Kohberger did?

Lol.

Scumbags.

My understanding of the stand mute is for a plea hearing. He's already plead not guilty.
I'm just talking of him voicing the plea rather than remaining silent, regardless of when. Just a joke of follow the new trend that Kohberger set and NEVER voice it no matter when. But yeah.

Troy Driver, 43, “committed suicide by asphyxiation” in his “maximum security jail cell” at the Lyon County Jail, the sheriff’s office announced Sunday.

“On August 6, 2023, at 1817 hours, deputies assigned to the Lyon County Jail were conducting routine hourly cell checks and conducting inmate head counts when they discovered an image who was unresponsive,” Sheriff Brad Pope said in a statement. Authorities said that both deputies and responding fire department medical personnel attempted to revive Driver with “several rounds” of CPR, but such attempts were unsuccessful and the inmate was soon pronounced dead.

Someone took the law into their own hands! Wow.
You think so? Not so sure here. This was county, not prison and he'd been there a long time for all of a sudden someone to care about offing him. Not to mention I would think most people in county hope to get out and not go to prison.

So why now? Was he just released from solitary or something? Or was he always in the general population, again its just county.

All I know is her family was cheated of justice. I'd like to know how they feel about it.

Good point. I was assuming a lot.
