Nevada woman disappears from Walmart, brother says video shows masked man forcing himself into her car

The brother of a missing Nevada woman, who disappeared Saturday from a Walmart parking lot, said chilling surveillance video shows a man force his way into her car before driving away.

Naomi Irion, 18, of Fernley in Northern Nevada, was last seen about 5 a.m. at the store’s parking lot, according to a Wednesday statement from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Irion’s four-door sedan was later found in an industrial area in Fernley, and a suspect believed to be driving a dark, newer model Chevrolet High Country pickup may know her whereabouts, police said.

Irion’s older brother, Casey Valley, 32, told NBC News on Thursday that surveillance footage from the Walmart shows a man wearing a face mask and a hoodie walk to the parking lot from the direction of a dirt lot, circle his sister’s car and then force his way in.

“He circled around the parking lot maybe to make sure there were no witnesses,” Valley said. “He came up behind the car and forced his way into the driver’s side of the car. Maybe her door was unlocked. He either said or did something to make her move to the passenger seat and then he drove her car away into an unknown direction.”

Representatives with the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office could not be immediately reached Thursday to corroborate Valley’s account. Valley also told NBC affiliate KRNV in Reno about the video.

The sheriff’s office is expected to hold a press conference about the case later Thursday.

This seems terrible! I hope it’s not because Fernley is a sleepy town!
He makes a good point. I take him as saying in the case of a missing adult that LE should listen to the family that this is NOT LIKE HER... They have said throughout she would never just take off, etc., she was responsible and so on... We all know for decades it has been almost a thing of waiting the 24 or 48 hours on a missing adult and that LE in many places just kind of blow it off as oh she is probably partying, ran away, she will be back in a day or so, just wait and see... And with teens sometimes too. I get that they can't go looking for every adult who is an hour late or a teen who constantly runs away but it could be a lot better... I think Petito and some are bringing and awareness of this the last few years but it has a long way to go... Jmo...

I almost think the fact that Fernley is a sleepy town calls for the opposite reaction. First it's not usual in their town right? So something is wrong... And second if quiet, it is not like they are busy on tons of other cases right...?

An immediate reaction may not have saved Naomi, no way to know that until more is known or she is found I suppose but I do get his point. What if it could have no matter whose loved one this is? Red tape, rules/laws, etc... Whatever the reason needs to change... For some situations... Imo.

I agree. Immediate action needs to take place in alot of situations. The waiting period means life or death in most of these cases. In stranger abductions the victim is usually dead within 3 hrs, And most definitely in 24.

Yes, they at least need to immediately see and talk to family and friends and determine if it is like that adult to go missing. Did they not make it to work and always went? That was the case here, red flag right there. Had she ever gone missing before? Doesn't sound like it. Red flag. And then get right ON last place known and obtain surveillance video or ring door bell footage etc. immediately.

I get warrants are needed for some things but I don't see any invasion of privacy of an adult, etc. but if someone is in a public camera covered place like Walmart, they can't expect privacy.

And enough red flags get on it like NOW. She didn't come home or get to work.

She was talking to her friends online up to just minutes before her shuttle was due with no indication of anything and then disappeared.

There are better ways I'm sure than what I suggest but they could do at least this and see what they find. None of this 24 or 48 hour stuff when no reason to think there isn't something wrong.

I am listening to this, just started and this was a multiple day period... I don't know the details yet but they plan to get to the fact it sounds like it was over days...

They are saying just now that the family found out through the news and was not notified yet... Might be worth listening to this... They are saying the news came out almost like "under cover"... No family notified...

They are saying this guy is worth looking at for any unsolved murders in the area... Not saying there are any that were him but saying he is the type it is doubtful has been crime free (I'm paraphrasing))....

@Kimster maybe your thoughts on Karlie Guse aren't so far off...

It shouldn’t be too hard to find out if there are other missing women in that portion of the desert. Unless they haven’t been reported.

Again I’m thinking about the interview with his friend that says there’s no way he could’ve done this. He was adamant about it. Sounds like this guy is a master manipulator, if they got the right guy.

I didn't listen to that whole show last night but they were saying that now that he is arrested they have his DNA and should run it against other cases, etc. They also said when he was arrested when far younger I think they wouldn't have collected his DNA at that time but nowadays it is required if I have it right... So maybe more hits will result on other cases, that is IF that department does that...

Irion, Barker families call for change to Nevada's missing person procedures after deaths
As both the Irion family mourns for Naomi and the Barker family mourns for Ronnie, their loved ones are calling for change to how officials initially respond to missing person reports. They say they felt powerless after contacting authorities for help.

During searches, officials say time is important. In Naomi's case, Valley said it took 36 hours for a detective to pick up her case. Although the family still does not know the time of death for Naomi, they believe a quicker response should have been standard practice.

The nephew of Ronnie Barker, Travis Peters, sat down with News 4-Fox 11 on Thursday. Peters said the couple was missing in the Nevada desert for a week before his uncle died. Rescue crews made it to his aunt on April 5, just 26 hours after her husband's death.

Peters added that an initial missing person report by the family happened 8 days prior on the 29th of March. He said, to his knowledge, the search did not start until 4 days later on April 2 and this was three days before Ronnie and Beverly Barker were found.

Attorney for Troy Driver says he has yet to see evidence that warrants murder charges
The attorney for Troy Driver, who has been charged with the murder of Fernley teenager Naomi Irion, said there are holes in the case against his client and, so far, there’s not enough evidence to go to trial.

Davies, who is now the lead defense attorney, said police were “eager to find someone who fits the profile that makes sense to them,” after complaints from Irion’s family about how the Sheriff’s Office handled the investigation following the disappearance of the 18-year old.

Lyon County District Attorney Stephen Rye said the case against Driver is moving forward.

"I can't comment directly on the evidence," Rye said.

Davies said the defense is retracing the investigation done by police and as things stand now, he doesn’t think there is enough evidence to go to trial.

“I’m still looking for the evidence supporting the charge against my client and I don’t see it,” Davies said.

Defense seeks to toss murder charge in Nevada kidnap-killing of Fernley teen
Lawyers for the man accused of kidnapping and killing a Fernley teenager are seeking to dismiss the murder charge by arguing he can’t be tried in Lyon County because she was killed in a neighboring county.

Troy Driver’s public defenders filed the motion to dismiss Wednesday in justice court in Lyon County where Driver is scheduled to appear Tuesday on first-degree murder, kidnapping and other charges in the March death of 18-year-old Naomi Irion.

They cite a state Supreme Court ruling last year that forced separate prosecutions of a Salvadoran immigrant who eventually pleaded guilty to four murders in two northern Nevada counties.

They say investigators acknowledged in the criminal complaint that the evidence shows Irion was killed in Churchill County where her body was found buried in the desert northeast of Fernley on March 29.

Prosecutors said in charging Driver, 41, of Fallon, days later that he abducted Irion in Lyon County from a Walmart parking lot in Fernley on March 12 “for the purpose of committing sexual assault and/or purpose of killing her.”

Such an intent would establish jurisdiction for a Lyon County murder trial under the high court’s ruling in the case of Wilber Ernesto Martinez Guzman.

But Driver’s lawyers say prosecutors won’t be able to prove he was the kidnapper, and therefore can’t establish he had the intent or committed the necessary “preparatory act” to be tried for murder in Lyon County.

Lyon County District Attorney Stephen Rye said in an email to The Associated Press on Friday that he plans to oppose the defense motion but hasn’t yet filed a formal response and anticipates the matter will be discussed at Tuesday’s status hearing in Fernley. Driver remains jailed without bail.

Troy Driver facing new sexual assault charges in Naomi Irion case
Troy Driver is now being charged with sexually assaulting 18-year-old Naomi Irion. He was first charged with kidnapping Naomi back in March, followed by additional charges of murder, destroying evidence and burglary in April of 2022.

The Lyon County District Attorney's Office filed the new complaint against Troy Driver on Wednesday, July 20 following an ongoing battle from the defense to relocate murder charges from Lyon County to Churchill County.

According to the district attorney's office, Driver sexually assaulted Naomi before shooting and killing her between the area of Fernley and Churchill County.

Driver's defense attorneys are currently trying to get his murder charges dropped, arguing that Lyon County is not the proper place for the charges because the murder happened in Churchill County.

Prosecutors filed a sexual assault charge along with several other charges Driver is facing:
  • First degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon
  • Kidnapping in the first degree with the use of a deadly weapon
  • Robbery with the use of a deadly weapon
  • Ownership or possession of firearm by certain persons prohibited
  • Burglary of a motor vehicle
  • Destroying evidence
Driver's next hearing is set for September 13, 2022, where he will be attending in-person for the first time since his arrest in March.

Troy Driver will not be arraigned on new sexual assault charges
The man accused of kidnapping and murdering Naomi Irion from Fernley won't be arraigned on recently filed sexual assault charges.

Driver waived his right to an arraignment for the new sexual assault and gun charges filed last week.

Prosecutors believed he kidnapped Irion then sexually assaulted her before killing her and burying her body in a rural area of Churchill County.

The next time Driver will appear in court will be for his pretrial on Sep. 13.

A judge will also hear arguments from the defense on why they believe the murder charge should be dismissed.

That will be the first time Driver will be at court in-person and not virtually.

He changed his tires to avoid being caught... I'm listening and adding here...
He knows what to do. He's a sicko, But he is lucid in his thinking. I believe he did ALOT of planning. What to do before, To achieve his sick goal and how to dispose of her and get rid of evidence. He thinks like a serial killer. Am organized one. I believe he had been watching her. I don't know if he has a record, But he's definitely offended before and worked up to this. Fantasy, Lower offenses, Escalating to this. Always. It doesn't just start at this point. I bet he has an unfortunate trail of victims. And I have the feeling he's gotten away with it. The victims not saying anything. Just a feeling I get. IDKY.

Troy Driver defense team claims he is incompetent to stand trial
Troy Driver's defense has filed a motion claiming he is incompetent to stand trial.

The motion comes from the Fernley Justice Court just days after Driver waived his right to be arraigned on new sexual assault charges recently added to the case against the 42-year-old.

The motion claims Driver is incompetent to stand trial, stating he lacks the ability to understand the nature of the charges against them and the nature and purpose of the court proceedings. His defense believes good cause exists to refer Driver for an evaluation to determine whether he is competent.

His defense also amended the motion to dismiss to include the new sexual assault charges.

He is competent enough to abduct her. Competent enough to assault her. Competent enough to murder her. Competent enough to not come forward but hide his deed. I am so SICK of this kind of SH*T. He is a danger and menace to society. PUT HIM AWAY and THROW AWAY the KEY. Any soft sobby hearts can help him then to change his ways or try to. This young lady was going to work and holding a job and doing her part. She was kidnapped, sexually assaulted and MURDERED. POOR HIM who can't understand!! BULL!!
