PAUL & MAGGIE MURDAUGH: South Carolina vs. Alex Murdaugh for Double Homicide of wife & son *GUILTY*

This case is being kept pretty quiet, no major details released to speak of (other than it does say there were two different guns used), but no info regarding who found them, who called 911, very little else.

Of interest, the grandfather died just a few days after these murders and it sounds as if he was ill from various articles so probably not unexpected. I think of the typical motives, did grandpa have a big estate? How big in the overall family of grandpa's on down? They sound like a pretty well known family and a powerful one in their state, more on that in the article.

I think sadly this one may not go far but only because it was all so messed with to begin with or investigation impeded, etc. I think they almost HAD to reopen it and take another look at it with all that happened but odds of finding enough to put anyone away not so sure of. Hopefully at least cause of death will be changed. Maybe if anything, a friend that was along and watched or participated or whatever, now that there is maybe a bit of trust in that the Murdaughs are not so powerful and untouchable any longer, may come forward and ask for immunity to share what happened IF such did happen and a Murdaugh was involved.

I think of the Vallow Daybell case when re-examining. I still don't believe Alex died of natural causes and I have doubts about Joe and re-examining didn't do it but still I am glad the family of Stephen are getting a second look into it and I hope something comes of it for them. Time will tell I guess...

The body of a young South Carolina man who died mysteriously just a few miles from the infamous Murdaugh family’s home is set to be exhumed, his family has said Friday.

<snip>
Smith’s mother, Sandy, shared the plans to move forward with the exhumation and independent autopsy Thursday on a GoFundMe page, which had aimed to raise $15,000 to do so. As of Friday morning, it had raked in more than $40,000.

“Our family is so very grateful to all of you who came together to help us in our fight for justice for Stephen. I could not have imagined when we began this fundraiser that it would take off the way that it did. Thank you for not allowing Stephen’s story to be swept under a rug,” Sandy Smith wrote in the update on the page.

Sandy Smith, the mother of Stephen Smith, whose unsolved death has haunted her for eight years, had a short but excited message when she learned that state police are now moving forward with his case as an official murder investigation.

"I've been waiting on this news for almost 8 years!" Smith emailed to The Hampton County Guardian Tuesday night. "I'm in shock, I'm elated, I'm waiting for the next chapter!"

Smith's reaction came minutes after her new legal representatives in the case involving her deceased son, Bland Richter LLP, disclosed the results of a phone call with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Chief Mark Keel.

Keel told the family's attorneys that the death of Stephen Smith is now officially being considered a homicide, "a shocking announcement after eight years of being proclaimed a highway vehicular manslaughter," said Bland Richter in a statement Tuesday night.

So IS the death certificate being changed/is changed?? And did something actually cause this, meaning new evidence it is a homicide or a person of interest and info showing it is a homicide? Or is this just due to the pressure and lack of belief by just about anyone that this was a hit and run? By the way a hit and run is a homicide isn't it...? How could they close the case when it was still unknown who did it by the way??

Very happy for his mom but she never should have had this lack of justice and b.s. to begin with.

I guess the article says vehicular death is manslaughter not homicide. Funny depending on whether there is intent, not sure they can say that. I doubt all hit and runs are accidents. If you mow down your spouse intentionally is that manslaughter? Just saying...

"intentionally" is the difference between manslaughter and murder in your example.
Yeah that's what I mean, how can they say it was unintentional or manslaughter when they don't know what it was. Either way too it was still a whodunit and they closed the case wrongfully and haven't had to explain that. There are still a lot of questions about investigations in that area imo and especially any that may relate to Murdaughs....

(NewsNation) — A rape kit was reportedly ordered hours after Stephen Smith’s body was discovered in 2015, in what officials initially claimed was the result of a hit-and-run accident.
South Carolina authorities are now reinvestigating Smith’s death, and they no longer believe he was killed in an accident.

Michael Duncan, a former South Carolina Highway Patrol supervisor, told NewsNation’s Ashleigh Banfield during an exclusive interview Wednesday that troopers were never given the opportunity to present their findings.

Duncan was working during the incident, but he never went to the scene. He said troopers received a call to stay back.

Smith’s wounds didn’t make sense with a hit-and-run, according to Duncan.

“Extremely disappointed. … I’ve never seen wounds like this that come from a car … In totality, it did not make sense why they were calling it a traffic accident,” Duncan said.

Steve Peterson is a former investigative consultant for the family of Stephen Smith. He told “Banfield” that the case has been “screwed up completely.”

Sandy Smith said she believes her son was beaten to death. Investigators have no evidence at the moment connecting anyone to his death. Still, previous interactions with the Murdaugh family created unfounded rumors that the Murdaughs may have had a connection to Stephen Smith’s death, despite having no evidence of a connection.

<snip>
Smith family attorney Eric Bland explained it is extremely rare for the state to reverse its original rulings.

Alex Murdaugh’s son Buster was a classmate of Stephen Smith’s, and some questioned whether the younger Murdaugh was involved in Smith’s death. But Buster Murdaugh has since released a statement adamantly denying any involvement in the death.

Bland said he doesn’t know why Buster Murdaugh’s name is even being mentioned in relation to the Smith case, saying he has no knowledge of any relationship or connection between them other than they knew each other and were classmates.

“But there is, to my knowledge, no connection right now between Buster and this murder,” Bland said.

The attorney said, if anything, Buster Murdaugh’s name being mentioned has helped expedite reopening the investigation into Smith’s death.

“Something must have come up during the investigation having to deal with Alex Murdaugh and killing the wife and his son, because according to law enforcement … based on that investigation, some information came up having to deal with the death of Stephen Smith,” criminal defense attorney and former senior homicide prosecutor Bernarda Villalona said. “We don’t know what it is. But what we do know, the game changer, is that this is ruled a homicide, and now law enforcement will be involved in investigating to find out who is responsible for killing Stephen Smith.”

Totally agree with you GrandmaBear. Somehow the Murdaugh trial was a catalyst to re-opening the investigation, but as the Smith family attorney says, no connection to Buster (or any Murdaugh), at least at this time.

Perhaps a new/different thread for Stephen Smith is warranted?

Yes I think a thread on Stephen would be a good idea as news is heating up on it.

It is interesting the Smith atty said they don't know why Buster and a relationship is being talked of BUT on Scott Reisch's show I just saw, I gather Stephen's mom wrote a letter to the F B I back in 2015 implicating Buster Murdaugh in her son's death. This letter has apparently surfaced or just resurfaced.... So I just read here that the Smith attorney doesn't know why Buster is being connected but then here comes that news that his mother said he was or thought he was back in 2015...

Interesting that out of the gate a rape kit was ordered hours after his body was discovered. There has to be something I imagine that triggered that... Wouldn't be typical to order in a hit and run I wouldn't think... And then I suppose the fix and power started coming in...

Maybe it is not related to a Murdaugh but it is darned interesting the reopening came due to Murdaugh and now we have a change in cause of death as well and we have supposedly a letter from Stephen's mother in 2015 to the F B I, not anyone in the state of SC, saying she believed Buster to be responsible/involved in her son's death...

We won't know until we know but I think there are some logical and educated guesses that can be made here that may end up being correct...

One has to wonder if she went outside of SC to the feds with a letter why it wasn't looked into then... She I would think was trying to get beyond the power of the Murdaughs and she and her son being what some in power would probably call an unimportant family. One that was denied justice with no power to do anything... Especially locally, probably didn't dare...
