Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

No kidding. I did not even really think about that part, good point. I did think at her age to be pining or connecting with someone from high school is, I don't know, maybe not strange as people do reconnect and find each other later in life sometimes, but she was married with children and they killed her husband! One wouldn't think they would be that close...

No real surprise the turn out in this case. Yes, I am cynical in cases like these. I don't see the average person having gotten away with this, not being tested, driving a cop car home (favor shown), plenty of time to "get clean", etc. The glasses seem like a "dead" giveaway to me. Even with shock, I find it very hard to believe he did not know this was a person.

It says they are calling for his resignation and I am not surprised at that either, nor am I surprised at his resistance to it.

I would like to see an accident re-enactment just for starters...

they also tell him that his story of it happening in the middle of the road didn't happen, saying it happened on the shoulder.

I missed this one but see you posted it above earlier.

It is horrible. It also seems to occur if not regularly well not infrequently or unheard of either, I have heard of other times where it is high numbers of girls who are school students. It seems they are at war in a sense and the government and military is not capable of stopping these evil thugs for lack of a better term.

It is beyond words disgusting when they prey on the vulnerable like youth and yet think they are so powerful using such tactics.

I won't pretend to be entirely up on Nigeria but I know enough to know it has serious problems.

Praying for these girls and their families!

Yeah. It had mostly went over my head until today. Apparently 300 boys were kidnapped in December? 7 years ago a large group of girls were kidnapped. Scores of them still missing.

I recall another one with a large number of girls. It probably was seven years ago, it seems like it was just a few plus years, but I do that all of the time.
