ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

President Biden to address the nation tomorrow .

That makes sense that Noze would have been into that one, so now I'm even more positive we had a thread on it before.
Yeah I followed or knew the Dermond case but don't recall every single detail but is ringing bells. I recall wondering if perp/s came by boat, etc., but don't think I recalled she wasn't found immediately, been some time. Haven't had a chance yet to look back at the thread and may not get to.

When I saw Nancy's headline, I thought it was a new case and it just sounded unusual as they do with trying to get attention to click in. Then when emu said OR I though no way I recall that one at all because I did not recall one in OR. I still have not watched it haven't had the time. The few things I have watched on anything recently, this week, I have not even been able to finish. Just been a rough one and not done yet.

ONCE said to me it was older, it rang bells with a case I recalled I thought maybe in FL but now we know it's GA. Still haven't looked back at the thread.

So understand one and all, I am flying a bit blind right now, never did watch the show of Nancy's, and then thought it reminded me of something in Florida or down that way, but was't sure, then emu said OR and still also haven't looked at the Dermond thread but I know darned well I followed it.

Hoping I get time but probably won't any time soon.

It is interesting what emu said in that now there is DNA or tests are available that can lead them to the perp/s.

And clearly this was not a bad one to be brought back to our attention either in that it was never solved and this was such a heinous and weird crime. Why would you behead the man and then take the woman off whether dead or alive and dump her with a cinder block or whatever in water...?I guess it definitely confuses things... Or what? You were trying to get some info out of one, scared her with beheading the husband then towed her out to get info (like bank account info or some such? all I can think of) or was some drug fueled mania or WHAT is this one???

I also may be thinking still of one other. Does anyone remember a judge and his wife and this is where I think Florida. Is this the same one? Or am I mixing up two in the south where both older spouses were murdered which isn't all that common? This man here was not a judge was he?

But in that one too, they were on a waterway, I recall that much... I thought Florida.

Anyhow, if two different ones or the same, neither solved and we and everyone forgets about them and what actually has been found out or has been done on them?

The OR thing really threw me off lol. BUT the DNA thing emu got by watching it is interesting. IF correct lol.

Find a case where one spouse is beheaded and one dumped tied to a cinder block elsewhere. I doubt there is another. If I hadn't just assumed Nancy's show was on a new or current case, and I did, it would have rang bells on a case in the south but I still think even there I am mixing up two unless they are one and the same.

Annnnnnd he's blocking another release of a man that a judge has ordered his release

I don't get a lot of time and sometimes do read but don't have the time to comment and sometimes don't even get to check or read but your state has serious crime and politics going on, no offense intended. Not as if any of us can fix it/help it. And i'll knock my own always when deserved as well.

Not up on all of it by a long shot but I am fed up with politics playing into justice. There's always been some of that probably with big ones or even littler ones like Read where issues can be used or played but it has gone so far beyond. We are taught we have the best system in the world well uhm things keep changing for one thing and I'd agree yeah, we don't stone women to death or anything. And thank God I still have a lot of faith in juries however they are only as good as the info a judge lets them receive and so forth. That can all also be played. I'm in danger of wandering off as I can do on a first morning off in a week from HE77. And have plenty of real life stuff to conquer.

I don't even know the deal here other than I'm guessing someone was exonerated and they are blocking release?

I'm just reacting to all the posts here and there I see about your state in general, do not take me wrong, many from you, and crime as well. So not commenting well informed and kind of jumping to the fact much is political most likely.

A judge orders release then higher up blocks. WHO though is right? There's bad on all sides and politics.

I'm commenting blind, probably shouldn't do that. Just again commenting to the politics always going on. It isn't that i've read it or am informed because I haven't, as to THIS one or any in particular.

Okay, coffee has started to kick in. I shall stop.

A new one by Linda. A Canadian case and about the dangers of releasing violent offenders back into society. Linda's are always good and yes, unfortunately I guess, her platform is Youtube where I find a lot of quality shows and this is one. It also highlights the release of dangerous offenders is going on not just here but in Canada and elsewhere too. This nutty experiment has gone too far. Imho.

As usual she says a lot and packs in a ton into a short time in only the way imo Linda can do.

Oh yes and the PM, Trudeau, has yet to speak to this young woman's family.

Just finishing. This is maddening but all too common of a story nowadays. At first it doesn't seem like he's got all that much of a record UNTIL one keeps listening.

There is so much blood on the hands of judges and politicians these days who can't be tough on criminals, it is ludicrous.

Goodness. :(

So I know little about the Ashley Benefield case and don't think it's followed here. Did anyone follow it? Been tried recently now verdict in. Also called the Black Swan/Ballerina murder trial. I don't know the motive or what happened and while I have seen the trial has been on lately, I didn't follow even when bored with little crime news because no time to watch a jury trial.

Guilty of manslaughter. Is this the only charge she faced or did they pick a lesser included? Sounds like it was all she was charged with or they would have read other verdicts of "not guilty". So some major coverage but not the highest of murder charges. Didn't realize it was only manslaughter and don't really know much about it at all.

Watched the verdict this morning, not sure why since I don't know the case, curious I guess and like to see justice served.

Okay. I gather there was also a second degree charge because one of the talking heads is saying this was probably a compromise verdict. How do you compromise in 30 minutes which I heard was the time the jury deliberated (unless they meant on this day only and there were others). Not clear to me. However she is facing 30 years since a firearm was used. I'm surprised if second degree was also in there it wasn't read in going up the charges as to the finding on that (not guilty I'd assume).

Knowing nothing at all about the case, some takeaways as to this and watching the verdict. It came in late at night per the judge so jurors were able to deliberate late, seeing this more so lately in a few courts and kudos to the ones doing it. A clock on the wall is shown right as they usher the defendant out in cuffs and I rewound and stopped the vid to try to see the time, and hard to tell but appears to be around 11 and the show had aired about 8 hours before now so that fits. So IF they only deliberated 1/2 hour which is how it sounds, court also ran late into the night right? Kudos for that too.

Cameras were fully on the victim's family in the gallery leading up to the verdict and then on the defendant herself. So different than what we saw in ID recently where basically no one could be shown and a camera on the defendant was at quite a distance (Daybell).

A PSI investigation was asked for and allowed and judge said they are running at least a month to six weeks out to do such so sentencing will be set some time from now when they reconvene. Bail was asked to be continued pending sentencing and argument given to that but judge denied it without explanation so I take it she's been out on bond until the verdict came in and this was tried.

I don't know the crime or case facts or what either side claims or even really what happened, nor motive. Might have followed the case had if had come across it prior and saw something about it, but I didn't too much. Have heard of it but probably more so more recently with trial coming up and then underway.

In the way of news, the verdict was covered (this was Vinnie and Court TV) but little said after as time was up. Just before verdict waiting for her and all to come in, he said wife died, dad brought home a woman nine months later, this one and then not long later dad was dead, at her hands, doesn't tell much. Firearm involved as she is facing 30 years for manslaughter because of the firearm per FL law.

Not even sure why I watched it but little on lately and was curious and thought I'd lean more. But didn't, could go looking but not going to.

Not sure why sharing either other than this trial has been a bit of focus, coming across hows on it lately as was in trial and also thought some may know more of it, be interested.

I'll give it to Florida on the cameras in the courtroom, the trying late into the evening (assuming) and letting jurors deliberate late.

I don't know how you compromise in half an hour if that is real time on all days or if there was only one day and that's how long they were out OTHER than I guess an initial vote maybe taken where zero felt it met second degree and all felt it did meet manslaughter. One talking head, the LITTLE time they had after before news had to end it was talking it must be a compromise. I wouldn't be so sure on that but again I don't know if Vinnie's mention of one half hour was total deliberation time or what. They could have done better to inform.

But then that's "news" and maybe there will be a follow up with more time given to a show on it but then in the way of "news" something else will be up next and no time maybe until sentencing comes IF they are even on it by then.

Most have slowly finally realized to start using platforms like YT but they still are of limited air time, etc.

Like the Delphi coverage yesterday, all channels or news had like two minute coverage of reporters that were there ALL DAY. They've all learned to use YT finally but still limit to a two minute time crunch to cover the day.

Anyhow, no point really, just sharing a recent verdict for anyone who might know more of the case. Watched out of more flat out boredom (not bored as to it being a work day and the usual tons to do) but when I take time to read or watch something, little on lately or discussed and so on, like in the morning hours when I get a moment, or after work.

Just been seeing this one as trial was on the last days or couple weeks, not even sure of that pop up lately. And saw that a verdict came in last night so put that part on.

So anyhow don't know sh*t about it

Okay, just read countless posts in the comments, a good way to know about a case one didn't follow because people will debate and talk of all the key facts. Shot him FOUR times? Called him over? Had guns ready? Was packed? Much more.

Twenty years. He could have been given a lot more as WI judges have a lot of discretion which can be a good thing or a bad thing. Some can also go too light, or too harsh. Didn't catch the whole thing.

He could have done consecutive but did it concurrent. Sounds like jury did not find it intentional and not first degree intentional.

I haven't followed since it happened but recall this case.

Still live. Light sentence it seems is thought. Reporter feels defendant had real remorse though. And more.

Wow. showed the defendant's statement to the court and family, worth a watch. I think I may have seen one that I may believe to be truly remorseful and not just for self. Rare. I think he may be truly sorry. Also looked right at the family when expressing remorse.

This whole incident was well, one I think while not two sides to, he did wrong, there was more to it than known. Doesn't excuse it though. Tubing the Apple is mostly a totally drunken event especially by the young. Has been for decades and there is probably some incident every weekend, and a lot of trouble, disrespect, and more. Fights, rebelry, more.

It's still live.

And I haven't looked back on the facts of this in awhile but I recall being pretty torn about what the real facts were.

Dad just interviewed and he appreciated the apology, expected double the sentence, etc. Did not expect the apology but glad the defendant made one.

Anyhow, not a strong opinion one way or another on this one as I have followed it since it happened but I think it falls in the middle.
