ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Sad :(. I wish sometimes they would clarify a bit better. It is unclear if the fourth child who escaped was one of her children. I am assuming probably that's the case but it does not make it clear.

I don't have an opinion here as I would like to know more about the case. Did none of the partygoers see this happen or hear anything? That number of people at the party, were all asleep other than her? I suspect it was claimed no one saw as LE first thought she tripped over edging and then changed the theory based on the injuries to going off a second story deck, both accidental? What was said by all party goers? Were all interviewed? Did the accounts match? How was it she was discovered and when and by who? Did she mix her own drinks, did she bring her own choice of drink? Admittedly that is a high alcohol level but it still does not mean it was an accident.

There is too little information in this article, typical, to know but I would like to know how thoroughly they investigated it or if they more assumed it was an accident. If not investigated thoroughly, then I think it should be looked at. Any "accident" should be fully investigated imo.

Appeals court reverses Denise Williams' murder conviction and life sentence

Tallahassee FL 11/25/2020
One of Tallahassee's most notorious murder cases took an unexpected turn after an appeals court reversed Denise Williams' conviction on a first-degree murder charge in the killing of her husband, Mike Williams.

But on Wednesday, the First District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee upheld her conviction on another charge — conspiracy to commit murder — and its accompanying 30-year sentence. The decision means the 50-year-old will remain in prison.

Mike Williams, a 31-year-old real estate appraiser, was reported missing Dec. 16, 2000, during what was supposedly a solo duck hunting trip to Lake Seminole in Jackson County.

But he had actually been shot and killed on the lake, the victim of an elaborate plot by his best friend, Brian Winchester, and Denise Williams, who prosecutors said wanted to get out of the marriage and collect $2 million in life insurance money.

More than 17 years later, Winchester confessed to carrying out the actual shooting and testified against Denise Williams, who for years had played the part of a grieving widow.

She was found guilty by a Leon County jury in December 2018 of conspiracy to commit murder, first-degree murder and being an accessory after the fact. She was sentenced to life in prison.

A three-judge panel overturned part of the verdict. In a 19-page order, Chief Judge Stephanie Ray and Judges Lori Rowe and Adam Tanenbaum unanimously found that the state failed to produce "competent" and "substantial" evidence to prove that Denise Williams was a "principal" to murder under state law.

Well that's disgusting. Can it be retried? I doubt it...?

So judges have more power than juries in all these cases now?

After I commented, I went and read a lot of their decision. A lot of it is dry reading with law, historical law and interpretation, etc., but I somewhat get it now but still, to me, the jury found her guilty and that should be the main thing shouldn't it? She apparently did not fit a key first "principal" in the murder charge as there was no evidence she encouraged him, cheered him on, was not there, was not the instigator, etc. which I guess applies in that particular charge... He also admitted to being the instigator of most things... Still, the jury felt it proved right? I don't know... Those same things did not save her though with the conspiracy charge as there was evidence of that. At least she can't try to say she was not in on her husband's murder or conspired about it and more...

This is HORRID. Disabled boy as well, blind and with leg braces. The St. Louis Police Association started a Gofundme, not sure I have ever seen that before.

Ask me right now of what I think of the death penalty... For certain offenders...

And he's a new daddy. Death.
