UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson killed in Midtown Manhattan by masked gunman in December 2024

This one also says they are legal. Numbers have at least doubled every year in the 5 years from 2017 to 2022. So we can assume at least 50,000 of them are on the streets by now IMO.

Are ghost guns outlawed in the US?

Building and buying 3D guns is legal at a federal level, however, they are being tightly regulated ever since Joe Biden came into administration.
Since the 1990s, do-it-yourself gun kits have been a popular pastime among gun lovers. However, their use in high-profile shootings has increased since the early 2010s. 3D printers have also been used to build fully functional guns, gun parts and accessories.
Before 2022, gun kits could be sold without serial numbers or being registered and buyers didn’t have to meet minimum age requirements or pass a background check to have one shipped to them.
According to data from the US Department of Justice, 25,785 3D guns were seized in the US in 2022, up from 1,629 in 2017.
It's pretty interesting that this is always a hot political issue and the timing of all of this.

I know of no one that has a 3D printer at home. I've never even seen one. Know little about it. I would think mainly businesses and maybe even some home businesses have them. My sister used to work somewhere she could make giant laminated posters, I kind of think of it the same. She wanted to get into that herself at home, never did but thought about it.

Even this article talks about Biden so is political,

I mean some killers in some cases have bought poisonous things off the internet.

If one wants to talk problems, it is the internet influence and lack of regulation. However, none of us want over regulation either. And there are dark sides to it. And not just in our country. Impressionable "kids" and I mean from kid through young adult.

Parents can't even keep up with the changes or what the kids are into either.

I was shocked and unhappy when Chromebooks were a thing and sent home with my grandchildren. As all are in schools these days, but that was years ago too. I'm on one right now. But that would be a major sidetrack.

Back to the point, the 3D gun very well might be legal as what you found shows to get one shipped, etc. No minimum age, etc. but he's not underaged so...

Laws do not keep up is one thing. God no one is even tried for how many years. Laws don't get passed as technology changes. It's all a hot mess.

We are on the internet but were raised in a time of common sense, morals, logic, etc. so we can enter it and see the b.s. if we encounter it. Know right from wrong. Etc.

Saw a very good show about him (never saying his name) the other night. He is a glory seeker.

But yes, and I keep saying it, things need to change, like the health care system. But he is no hero. And they are different subjects.

Gun laws do vary by state. These are hard questions to answer but good ones. And I am going to readily admit I don't know all the answers.

My home state is pretty relaxed on gun laws, I mean there is hunter safety but children can hunt with an adult. My grandson's dad is an avid hunter and my grandson has been hunting and shooting since a pretty young age. Quite good at it too. One can buy them a gun even, not sure whether it can be in their name. I've never done much that way and so not real sure. I'm talking WI. There are also conceal and carry laws, both states I'm in allow such but you need a permit I believe in both and a class. Talking more self defense there and pistols. I am no gun expert, my terms might not even be right.

Both are big hunting states, MN and WI. We just finished a bit ago the deer hunting season which is huge in both. Kids go with. It's a major tradition around Thanksgiving. MN is first, their season, then WI's starts. Imo they follow each other so people can hunt in both states and the seasons do not compete.

I know LITTLE about 3D printing, never even seen it, would like to know more. Never done it, seen it, etc. Laws have not kept up with the internet I can say that much.

Isn't he charged both in NY and now federally? The laws matter in NY if he has charges in each. Federal has their own laws. Federal law trumps state law IF they put down a law for all states. That's largely getting ignored some though nowadays by certain states, etc.
For instance, sanctuary cities and illegal immigrants, etc. are illegal by federal law but it gets ignored. First one I think to do that was CA.

Like I said it's kind of hard to answer but they are good questions.

As to the states, here is an example, people will drive from here to North Dakota for cigarettes because they are enough cheaper, it is worth a fairly long trip. Some do such things if close to a border just for gas, as gas prices vary per state, and taxes, same with cigs. Now there's pot, in some states it is legal and in some it is not. Everything is a huge nightmare.

I know CA has some over the top ridiculous laws. A lot of truckers will not even truck there. Over regulated so bad.

But I'm not up on NY's. However I did watch some things and the first degree murder thing was interesting. There has to be an aggravating factor, not just an intentional murder. To me, intentional, planned murder is first degree but I gather there it is not.

Like we tried to explain in Maxwell/Epstein, state is different than federal. This guy whose name I will never say can be charged in both imo. States have their own autonomy over a lot of things and in theory and through the years, that's a good thing usually, but it's changing and imo being abused by some too. Some people move just based over state laws, seriously.

Before I fell and in these last years, I was trying to decide if a buy a home or ever could again, what state I prefer to do it in because it's a long term thing. SS rules vary in each state. One state taxes SS, one does not. Sales tax in MN is far higher than in WI. Politics and freedoms are different in each but politicians can change every few years...

This is long enough but hoping it gives a picture of how it can vary.

And then one can get down to just counties.

MN was ridiculous over the COVID rules, WI much more relaxed. The MN governor's rules made no sense at all.

It's pretty out of control imo. And I get why people are up in arms over this and the health care thing, because it's a morass and a mess and unfair and more. But giving this guy any glory is not right, he's a 26 year old that planned a murder and didn't even have a gripe with him or that company so far as I've heard yet.

Now people come out of the woodwork and say things because I guess there's someone to hide behind and others to hang with while they say it, and no one brave enough to say a word before. Although honestly, I think they are often trolls, etc. in any case but each time real people fall for the sh*t.

This guy is a singular person that committed cold blooded murder. More may be involved. It is interesting he is mad at corporate America since his family is part of such and has owned, country clubs, nursing homes and more.

All of this I guess is just "my opinion piece". I will never combine the two things. You don't kill as an answer and people making him some hero is ridiculous. He IS no different than a terrorist shooter, etc. and imo intended to go on doing these type of things, someone was next imo. Attention as well, and all are sure giving it to him, or many.

My daughter was over a couple of nights ago, and we talked of this some, and I am SO glad she sees it. The things some of the last generations were taught has to be combatted but we are seeing the results for a lot of years now imo.

That's probably as far as I can go, if that's not even too much.

I guess I'd add the advent of the internet seemed to start a lot of things... But now I'm going down a path so will stop.
So it sounds like he will be/has been charged with a lot - both federal and state. I'll see if i can find an article that shows detail of all these federal and state charges.

These are his federal charges. Maximim sentence of death, minimum sentence 30 years in prison. His state charges will be dealt with first and we still wait to see what they will be.

Luigi Mangione Charged With The Stalking And Murder Of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson And Use Of A Silencer In A Crime Of Violence

For Immediate Release
U.S. Attorney's Office, Southern District of New York
Edward Y. Kim, the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York; Merrick B. Garland, the Attorney General of the United States; James E. Dennehy, the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”); and Jessica S. Tisch, the Commissioner of the New York City Police Department (“NYPD”), announced the unsealing today of a Complaint charging LUIGI NICHOLAS MANGIONE in connection with the December 4, 2024, murder of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan. MANGIONE was taken into federal custody today and will be presented this afternoon in Manhattan federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Katharine H. Parker.

Acting U.S. Attorney Edward Y. Kim said: “Brian Thompson was gunned down in cold blood as he walked down a street in midtown Manhattan. Thompson was allegedly killed just because he held the position of chief executive officer of a health insurance company. As alleged, Luigi Mangione traveled to New York to stalk and shoot Thompson in broad daylight in front of a Manhattan hotel, all in a grossly misguided attempt to broadcast Mangione’s views across the country. But this wasn’t a debate, it was murder, and Mangione now faces federal charges. This Office and its law enforcement partners remain steadfast in our commitment to fight violence in whatever form it takes.”
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said: “Today, the Justice Department has brought federal murder charges against Luigi Mangione. As alleged, Mangione planned his attack for months and stalked his victim for days before murdering him — methodically planning when, where, and how to carry out his crime. I am grateful to our state and local law enforcement partners for their tireless efforts to locate and apprehend the defendant and to ensure that he answers for his alleged crime.”

FBI Assistant Director James E. Dennehy said: “Luigi Mangione allegedly conducted the carefully premeditated and targeted execution of Brian Thompson to incite national debates. This alleged plot demonstrates a cavalier attitude towards humanity – deeming murder an appropriate recourse to satiate personal grievances. Through continued close partnership with the NYPD, the FBI maintains our steadfast commitment to fervently pursue any individual who promotes a personal agenda through violence.”

NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said: “NYPD detectives worked relentlessly to identify and widely distribute images of the suspect who allegedly carried out this premeditated, preplanned, targeted murder, and they are committed to assisting prosecutors in seeing this important case through to its rightful conclusion. This senseless incident highlights the critical role of the public in the NYPD’s public safety mission, and I thank everyone who saw something, said something, and did something. It is because of the public’s actions that we now have an alleged killer in custody back in New York City.”

As alleged in the Complaint:

Over the course of the last several months, MANGIONE meticulously planned the execution of Brian Thompson in an effort to initiate a public discussion about the healthcare industry. MANGIONE targeted the victim, tracked his whereabouts, and traveled from out of state to New York City, where the victim was scheduled to attend the company’s investor conference. After arriving in the City on November 24, 2024, more than one week before the murder, MANGIONE performed reconnaissance in the area around the victim’s hotel and the conference venue where the victim was scheduled to speak. Using a false identification, MANGIONE checked into an Upper West Side hostel.

In the early morning hours of December 4, 2024, MANGIONE traveled by bicycle from the Upper West Side to the area around West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue. At approximately 6:45 a.m., MANGIONE strategically placed himself in between two cars on West 54th Street, and as the victim passed by, MANGIONE walked up behind the victim and fired several gunshots from a 9mm pistol causing the victim’s death. The pistol was equipped with what appeared to be a firearm sound suppressor or silencer. After the murder, MANGIONE fled on his bicycle northbound through Central Park and ultimately back to the Upper West Side.

On December 9, 2024, MANGIONE was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania while he sat in a fast-food restaurant after being recognized by one of the restaurant’s workers. Members of the Altoona Police Department confronted MANGIONE, who provided the same false identification that he used when checking-in to the Upper West Side hostel. MANGIONE was also found in possession of, among other things, a 9mm pistol and a sound suppressor consistent with the weapon used to kill the victim.

* * *

MANGIONE, 26, of Towson, Maryland, is charged with one count of using a firearm to commit murder, which carries a maximum potential sentence of death or life in prison; one count of interstate stalking resulting in death, which carries a maximum potential sentence of life in prison; one count of stalking through use of interstate facilities resulting in death, which carries a maximum potential sentence of life in prison; and one count of discharging a firearm that was equipped with a silencer in furtherance of a crime of violence, which carries a maximum potential sentence of life in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years.

The maximum and minimum potential sentences in this case are prescribed by Congress and are provided here for informational purposes only, as any sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the judge.

Mr. Kim praised the outstanding investigative work of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force and the NYPD.

Mr. Kim also thanked the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, which has brought a separate prosecution against MANGIONE, which is currently expected to proceed to trial before the federal case.

The case is being handled by the Office’s Violent and Organized Crime Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dominic A. Gentile, Jun Xiang, and Alexandra Messiter are in charge of the prosecution.

The charges contained in the Complaint are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The 26-year-old man charged in the predawn killing of a health insurance executive on a Manhattan sidewalk this month is scheduled to make his first appearance in New York State Supreme Court on Monday, prosecutors said.
The man, Luigi Mangione, is facing three state murder charges, including two terrorism counts in the death of the executive, Brian Thompson. Mr. Mangione also faces weapons charges.
The hearing on Monday will be the first opportunity that Mr. Mangione and his lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, will have to formally respond to accusations leveled by the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
In addition, in a parallel case, federal prosecutors in Manhattan unsealed murder charges against Mr. Mangione on Thursday. He has pleaded not guilty to those charges.
The killing, in the early hours of Dec. 4, gave rise to a debate about the frustrations that Americans have with the health insurance industry — the high costs, the denials of coverage and what many say is the industry’s prioritization of profits.
Mr. Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was walking that morning toward the entrance of a Hilton hotel on West 54th Street when a masked and hooded gunman opened fire behind him. Mr. Thompson, who was headed for an investor meeting, was shot once in the back and once in the leg.
Authorities have said that it was Mr. Mangione who waited nearly an hour outside the hotel that morning, armed with a 3-D-printed 9-millimeter handgun fitted with a suppressor. And as Mr. Thompson walked by, Mr. Mangione raised the weapon and fired, the police said.
Days later, Mr. Mangione was eating hash browns at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., when a fellow customer remarked to a friend that he resembled a person in photos released by the New York Police Department. An employee, who overheard the conversation, alerted the local police and Mr. Mangione was arrested.
Officers found a handgun, ammunition and fake identification cards on him, as well as a 262-word handwritten manifesto in which he appeared to take responsibility for the killing.
Prosecutors in Manhattan, led by District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, have said that Mr. Mangione meant to terrorize civilians.
“This was a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation,” Mr. Bragg said at a news conference.
Ms. Friedman Agnifilo, Mr. Mangione’s lawyer, has called the parallel prosecutions a confusing and “highly unusual situation.” In federal court on Thursday, she voiced her frustration, saying that she had been prepared to defend her client that day in state proceedings.

Did not go into the link but you often post if not all, the bulk of such anyhow which I appreciate. Not at my best time right now.

So I took a lot from this, but the key point was there is still a NY charge which will at this point proceed before the federal charge. He is up a creek, as he well should be.

I mean there's a lot more there but that's the main thing.

Being handled by the Office's Violent and Organized Crime Unit, a lot about the planning and premeditation.

People need to stop glorifying him, he's nothing but a common criminal although perhaps went for a higher level of glory. He is not some folk hero. He77 he wouldn't even know what the folk part of that means.

Personally I think there's a bit more behind this, others, something online, not sure if we shall ever hear it.

But people should NEVER applaud cold blooded murder.

I'm struggling to find the words.

I understand the analogies, that the health care industry kills too by denying care. TOTALLY agree. An eye for an eye too for example. I wanted so badly to kill our killer that I begged to talk to someone. And then did, a pastor. At length. Try being around the killer of someone you loved for a week, not under arrest but you know of it.

I know what I sound like but going to finish it anyhow.

You don't fix a thing this way and AGAIN he did not even seem to have anything personal here as to this guy/victim.

It is NOT the answer.

People need to come together if anything and yell as a group and that does not happen any longer. They have divided and conquered for many years now but there are some issues we really do all agree on.

I could sidetrack here a thousand ways but not going to. And of course just jumped off your post, not involving you.

A good find by the way.

He had a hearing today. Did watch it but don't have the link right now, Tons covered it though. His attorney went on about the grandstanding and the big perp walk show, the mayor and commissioner, etc. Said saying things and poisoning jury pool, not using word alleged, that he's innocIment til proven guilty, yada, yada. Pled not guilty I believe. Asked to have discovery sped up. Prosecutor had a fair amount to say too.

Good Lord he seems arrogant and smug. Imo.

The suspect accused of killing UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson has pleaded not guilty to New York state murder and terrorism charges.

Luigi Mangione, 26, appeared in court on Monday to be arraigned on 11 state criminal counts, including murder a crime of terrorism.

As well as the state-level charges, he is also accused of federal (national-level) stalking and murder offences that could lead to a death penalty sentence.

Prosecutors allege that Mr Mangione shot Mr Thompson in central Manhattan before going on the run. Authorities later arrested him at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania.
Mr Mangione appeared in court on Monday wearing a maroon sweater, white-collared shirt and khaki trousers.

In addition to a long stream of journalists waiting for the suspect to appear, members of the public - almost all of them young women - were in court, some of whom told CBS, the BBC's US partner, that they were there to show their support.

Mr Mangione is facing 11 state criminal counts in New York, including first-degree murder and murder as a crime of terrorism.

If convicted of all the counts, he would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Federal prosecutors have also separately charged Mr Mangione for using a firearm to commit murder and interstate stalking resulting in death. Both charges could make him eligible for the death penalty.

He has yet to enter a plea on those charges.

Prosecutors have said the federal and state cases will move forward parallel with one another.

In court last week, Mr Mangione's lawyer - Karen Friedman Agnifilo - said that the two sets of charges appear to conflict, with the state charges accusing him of seeking to "intimidate or coerce a civilian population" while the federal charges focus on crimes against an individual.

Ms Agnifilo said that the overlapping cases were "confusing" and "highly unusual".

"I've never seen anything like what is happening here" in 30 years of practising law, she said.

In court on Monday, she further told the judge that she believed that statements from government officials - including New York City Mayor Eric Adams - make her "very concerned about my client's right to a fair trial".

"This is a young man," she said. "He is being treated like a human ping-pong ball between two warring jurisdictions here."

She also accused state and federal authorities of treating Mr Mangione like "political fodder" and a "spectacle" by bringing him back to New York by helicopter, surrounded by officials and armed guards, in full view of cameras and journalists.

The judge, Gregory Carro, said that he is unable to control what happens outside court, but vowed that Mr Mangione would receive a fair trial.

In response, the state's prosecutor said that he had never seen a case with a "higher volume" of quality evidence.

The suspect is currently in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn after being returned to New York amid heavy security last week.

Authorities believe that Mr Mangione carried out a targeted killing of Mr Thompson, pointing to evidence that he was angry at the US healthcare industry.

The federal complaint notes that a notebook found in Mr Mangione's possession expressed "hostility towards the health insurance industry and wealthy executives in particular."

Some on social media praised Mr Mangione's alleged crimes, often sharing their own anger at the US private healthcare system.

Speaking to CBS, the BBC's US partner, on Sunday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that the online rhetoric has been "extraordinarily alarming".

"It speaks of what is really bubbling here in this country," he said. "And unfortunately we see that manifested in violence, the domestic violent extremism that exists."

It wasn't all that long but interesting to watch. Four cops behind him standing while he was at the table with his atty. She also went on about I forget if she said assault rifles or machine guns and she didn't even know officers had such weapons, when he was escorted, I think the highly public perp walk. Not much of a surprise being this is the kind of case political grabs onto big time. Imo.

Of course always guns come up.

She says never seen anything like it in 30 years the difference in the fed charges and state, yada, yada. I wasn't all that impressed with her but suppose she's making a record. Seemed pretty shaky to me, maybe knows her stuff, no newbie. Think she represents someone in Diddy or some such or her hub does, something like that.

Prosecutor said fed was going to let them try their case first and no such whatever is going on, that is known already. And imo as well, the cases do not have to match. They are two completely different court systems and different charges. She referred to her client as a human ping pong ball and here came federal charges out of the blue.

I don't find any of that very noteworthy. I DO think they did total grandstanding with the perp walk and who attended and all. For the publicity and politics, that I do not disagree with. However, this is also a man who is dangerous and did an act everyone is well aware of and all need to know he IS under arrest and off the streets. But yes, there is grandstanding, no doubt.

Personally I think his atty is probably overwhelmed she has two different courts to deal with now as well and she didn't have a lot of notice on the fed charges. Well, that's how it goes. Of course could also all be a game on her part, how do we know...

She is making a record, certainly, out of the gate.

Can't imagine what defense they think will work. If the evidence is all it is said to be.

Boy the part in your article about almost all young women being there for him. This world has gone so dumb. Of course they could be paid and sent as many supporters are in other things. A well known fact but political so shall leave it.

Even the four cops behind him seemed like overkill in a way BUT you also have a man who the public is well aware of what he did and most do not want him to escape and the public maybe needs to see they are't giving such a chance. For all the "free him" and b.s. on the internet it often does not match the more silent majority and what they think. I don't think it ever does. On any issue.

He's just another spoiled brat who benefited off corporate America himself imo. I am open to changing my opinion on that but I have seen no reason to yet. Attn seeker at all costs I guess but then was he stupid enough to think he wouldn't be caught? Probably. Sometimes the smartest minds have absolutely no common sense.

The conspiracies have probably already started. I wouldn't know. I've stuck to sane watches about it. Although I thought the doctor part of the team on HTC was very much off the mark in one show. I often do. Part of more than a few reasons not my fave channel. On the other hand Lauren has been very good with her coverage in Delphi and before that in Daybell. So my opinion on that channel is often mixed.

I've gone on long enough. I did though watch the hearing and on a couple of channels actually. There was a problem with it it seemed a couple of times so I went back to see if it got worked out, etc.

This is imo already being used politically, such always are. And the intent may have even involved such.

It's early days yet really.

Scott's shows usually involve several top cases so even though it says Kohberger, this one is on there first. He covers a lof of law in it, for anyone who has trouble following our system and that includes me. I can barely post but wanted to o share, he talks he federal law, etc., why went something is not a conflict but seems like one and so on. Let's see if I can even get it done, not managing too well. It's a good show, they generally are, if I ever join anyone, it would likely be him.

It belongs in other threads, I'm not going to manage that, like Kohberger, again his shows generally have updates on several cases. Let's see if I can manage it here even. I did not know a lot of this stuff, as to the fed law, judges, magistrates, etc. And he's sane.

I did not even know most of this stuff is the new hype/b.s.

Some will watch, some probably won't, but it's at the start pretty much. He always has an ad or two. Not going to probably manage to post on like Kohberger, etc. Can barely do this but thought it pretty good.

Luigi Mangione visited Thai gun range before UHC CEO killing: Report

Luigi Mangione, the man accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, visited a gun range during a trip to Thailand three months before he visited New York, according to travel companions.

The 26-year-old visited the gun range after taking a solo trip across Asia early last year, two German tourists, who met him while traveling, told TMZ’s new “Luigi Mangione: The Mind of a Killer” documentary.

The tourists, identified only as Paul and Max, said Mangione skipped a beach day and visited the range instead.

They also tourists claimed Mangione was “obsessed” with the book “Hit Reverse: New Ideas From Old Books” by Indian author Jash Dholani, which examines philosophical viewpoints from various authors.

According to Dholani, Mangione attempted to buy 400 copies of the book, but the transaction was flagged and rejected by the bank. Mangione was only able to buy 1 copy of his book.

The federal charges could carry the possibility of the death penalty, while the maximum sentence for the state charges is life in prison without parole. Prosecutors have said the two cases will proceed on parallel tracks, with the state charges expected to go to trial first.

Why would he need 400 copies of a book?? Unless it's for some group or some such.

He clearly is not broke from any insurance denial if he was traveling in Thailand. I think it's already been determined he did not do this from any personal grudge but was looking to be some "famed" person or some such, or be known for something, and philanthropy go figure.

Transaction flagged, I wonder why. No funds or some other reason...

Probably thought self smart practicing at a gun range out of country but then was so stupid when he committed the actual crime.

Been out of commission for awhile so not up on much but that's my read on this for now.

Again, not a hero.

Sure is a lot of idiots around who wish to support the cold-bloodied murderer of a father.

I tried to come post this news last night but all keywords I searched brought up no results when trying to find the thread. It was late and so I gave up.

A lot of idiots is correct. What a revolting message they are sending. It is cold blooded murder and he IS no hero. Talk about lacking a single brain cell...

Once I thought about it for a bit, this sounds like a lot of money to us, but it's not. It isn't representative of that many people either. Thank GOD it would mean hopefully there are not that many crazy idiots who can't see a very easy right from wrong situation. I mean at $1 each that's only 300K idiots and we know it is far less than that because probably no one gave only $1. This is a few out of a country of multi millions of people and that would be the highest number it could be and no way people gave only $1 so it's only a "few" people so to speak.

It is also a drop in the bucket for legal defense. He is facing charges in two states and then federally. Imo $300K is not going to go far or come close to taking him through all three.

The message it sends, and to HIM as well, is dangerous and disturbing but I agree it comes from total IDIOTS.

He also doesn't need the money as his family are wealthy. Lets say they each gave $10 - that would just be 30k people. They need to realise that they need the money more than he or his lawyers do.
