Family offering $20,000 reward for man who disappeared after ‘weird run-in’ with stranger

Katie Wells of Rigby tells EastIdahoNews.com her nephew, Dylan Rounds, was last seen Saturday in Lucin, Utah, on the farm where he is working. Rounds apparently called several family members last Wednesday after having a “weird run-in” with a guy on a gravel road.

“The man was walking down the gravel road barefoot. He flagged Dylan down, who was in his truck. He asked to use Dylan’s phone and was acting erratically. Dylan felt the man was dangerous and may have been high. When he asked Dylan for a ride, (Dylan) did not give him a ride,” Wells explains.

Wells says the man was spotted in Montello, Nevada several days later asking about Dylan and there are reports that the man got a ride to Dylan’s trailer on Saturday.

“We don’t believe anything was ransacked,” Wells explains. “Dylan is missing, his phone is missing and his wallet.”

Noting Dylan’s age, Wells says some people seem to think Dylan ran off, but she suspects foul play.

“He is an old soul, farm boy at heart. All he wants to do is get up and work all day every day. He isn’t interested in partying, he isn’t interested in travel. He never dated in high school. He’s not your typical 19-year-old,” Wells says.

Dylan’s mom, Candice Cooley, lives in Twin Falls and his dad, Justin Rounds, lives in Ucon. They are actively involved in the search and are offering a $20,000 reward to anyone who finds him or knows where he might be.

Yeah, my take on Kurt is that regardless of whether he was after the reward, he believed that the info was (at least) potentially credible, but it's my understanding that the mother now thinks it was a ruse, which doesn't make sense to me, does it to you?
As for the grandma call, the info was that it was from Dylan's farm but now that I've thought about it, I suppose that that could still be accurate and that for some reason, info re a call to Brenner from the 'grain shed property' gate was withheld, which I don't understand since by that time, he would have already either confirmed or denied any contact with Dylan, right?
I'm not following you on the comments about the grandma call?

Sorry about that. I was confused as to where the grandma call actually occurred, that is, whether it was from his farm or from the gate of the grain shed property.
I've since reviewed the press release from Nevada in which it's stated that the call was to a family member and was from Dylan's farm. It went on to state that the "last cell data communication was...near his farm", which I assume is the call to Brenner that the parents believe was from the gate area of the grain shed property.

A false story could be to throw off suspicion on another, for a reward or just a lot of speculation in that area/rumor that led to such imo. I think they were even probably looking at Kurt in the beginning (the parents) as they didn't know who or what and he had equipment out there and he was in Montello recently etc. Hard to say.

Maybe as far as pinpointing the exact location too it took getting more detailed records, pings, triangulation or something which took more time. I don't understand all that stuff but it's one thought or I think the first rush of family finding out he was missing and trying to figure things out as to where he was, who was where, etc.

Even if Brenner had already confirmed or denied any contact, it may be one of those things just not formerly shared and is just one of the inconsistencies, etc. that are adding up but maybe not enough to charge with murder, or anything relating to Dylan.

If as she said he likely called Brenner to unlock, it makes sense and it also tells us the owner of that property with the grain shed trusted him to do at least that. It may be part of why he was allowed to live there. Mom in beginning talked like he was a squatter (think she did) but he is no squatter if he had a key to the gate and had to be called for Dylan to get it unlocked. Maybe the owner exchanged the right to stay there with taking care of such things. It also says Dylan was not trusted with a key. Can't recall if it was key to gate or shed but one of those two.

Yeah, I don't know whether Dylan ever had a key but it causes me to wonder (again) about his arraingement with the property owner. (If it's been explained, I obviously missed it.)

The mother of Gabby Petito – a 22-year-old New York woman who died at the hands of her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, on the final stretch of their cross-country road trip in late August 2021 – is shining light on the case of missing Utah farmer Dylan Rounds.

Nichole Schmidt shared a missing poster for Rounds, 20, to her Twitter page, which has amassed a following of more than 70,000 users, on Monday with the hashtag #MissingPosterMonday.

Rounds vanished on May 28, when the then-19-year-old told his grandmother he needed to get his grain truck out of the rain.

Dylan Rounds’ parents optimistic there will be a break in son’s disappearance case soon

The parents of a missing man from eastern Idaho who disappeared nearly nine months ago are optimistic there will be a break in the case soon.

Chase Venstra, 41, and James Brenner, 59, two men who interacted with Dylan in the days before he vanished, were arrested in July for felony gun crimes in Utah. They have not been charged in connection to Dylan’s disappearance, but Dylan’s parents believe Brenner, who was squatting on nearby property, knows what happened to their son.

“We have a lot of information, it just cannot publicly be released. It will completely jeopardize the case at this point,” Candice Cooley, Dylan’s mom, tells EastIdahoNews.com. “Things are happening behind the scenes, just not at the speed we want them to. But there is progression.”

Investigators have said there is “substantial evidence” that Dylan was the victim of a homicide and his parents have spent countless hours looking for their son in the remote Utah desert. Although searches have slowed during the winter months due to heavy snowfall, Cooley and Justin Rounds, Dylan’s father, have tried to remain hopeful.

“It still doesn’t even seem real,” Rounds explains. “I’ll just be sitting there some nights and all of a sudden get like a kick in the gut realizing what’s happened. You know that he’s gone…I don’t even know how to explain it.”

Rounds’ parents have publicly expressed disagreements about how the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office in Utah has handled their son’s case. The office is working with the FBI and while Cooley says there have been some “stalls and hiccups” over the past few months, they are patiently waiting for an arrest tied directly to Dylan’s disappearance.

“We do know there’s more evidence. We don’t know what it is but we know that there’s more,” Cooley says.

Brenner has a violent history. Sounds like Brenner may have moved Dylan’s body. DNA on Dylan’s boot belonged to both Dylan AND Brenner! Dylan’s phone was found at the bottom of the pond due to LE tracking it there. There’s some kind of video on Dylan’s phone that was recorded at the time of his disappearance! The video showed Brenner cleaning a gun, and he had blood stains on him. Wow!

The shirt Brenner was wearing in the video was found and analyzed, and Dylan’s DNA was on the shirt.

All of this is on the probable cause statement.

I wonder if we’re ever going to get to see that video of Brenner? And why was Dylan‘s camera taking a video of him? Did Brenner accidentally set it down and the video started playing? Whatever it was, it’s like Dylan calling from the grave.
Reminds me of Abby and Libby, whatever happened. His own phone giving evidence used to arrest his killer.

“We have fought so hard for charges”: Dylan Rounds’ mother reacts to murder charge in son’s disappearance

A day after formal murder and desecration of a body charges were filed in her son’s disappearance, Dylan Rounds’ mother is speaking out about the last nine months.

“Knowing who our son was, knowing what he would do in our position is what has kept me going forward,” said Candice Cooley.

“We knew the first day we got out there when we saw Dylan’s boots what happened,” Cooley said. “For us, this is a win. We have fought so hard for charges.”

“This is good news,” Cooley told KSLTV on Saturday. “We don’t have a conviction and we don’t have Dylan’s body, but we won the first battle.”

Cooley described the evidence as solid.

“If a jury doesn’t convict him, I will be absolutely shocked,” she expressed.

Cooley said she’s confident that her family and volunteers will find her son’s body.

“When the weather breaks, and we can get out there—and if some sort of deal hasn’t been cut and we’re still facing trial—we will spend the whole summer out there finding our son, and we will find him,” she said.

I would think they could cut a deal with him so they can find Dylan.. The video tells it all!

Dylan Rounds’ parents detail timeline of when they think son was killed, say murder charge is a ‘huge win’

“The video showed the defendant with blood stains on his arms and shirt as he was cleaning a gun. The shirt which defendant is wearing in the video was analyzed and the victim’s DNA was found on the shirt,” the probable cause statement says.

Cooley says the video was recorded inside Brenner’s trailer at 7:27 a.m. on Saturday, May 28 – around 30 minutes after Rounds spoke with his grandmother on the phone. It was the last time his family heard from him.

After the call, Rounds went to move his grain truck inside a shed near Brenner’s trailer before it started to rain.

“We know Dylan was at the gate (to enter the shed) around 6:57 a.m. If you give it another five minutes, he’s up at the shed around 7:02, 7:03,” Cooley explains. “So everything happened within like 32 minutes.”

Cooley says her son’s phone did not record anything else and she, along with Justin Rounds, Dylan’s dad, have no idea how the device preserved such a crucial piece of video evidence.

“How did that phone start recording? It has driven us crazy,” Cooley says. “I’m pretty sure when Brenner took the phone, he just hit the wrong button or had a wrong swipe and had no clue. Then it started recording.”

Rounds’ parents say the video shows the “cold-heartedness” of the alleged crime and has made them more determined to see that justice is served on behalf of their son.

“When I heard about the video of him washing the blood off of his hands and the gun…it hit me hard. I was so angry. And I wasn’t supposed to tell anybody about it – it was just hard,” Justin Rounds says.

Justin Rounds recalls visiting the area where Dylan disappeared last May for the first time and speaking with Brenner. Looking back, he feels the conversation may shed some light on why the man may have killed his son.

“When I got there, Brenner was talking about how Dylan backed into his horse gate. He was a little frustrated and I didn’t think a whole lot about it at the time. But that could have been what set him off,” Rounds says.

IDAHO FALLS — While many enjoyed camping, boating, visiting cemeteries and spending time outdoors this Memorial Day weekend, Candice Cooley and Justin Rounds marked a horrible anniversary: the disappearance of their son.

Dylan Rounds vanished May 28, 2022, in Lucin, Utah. Since then, one Christmas, one Thanksgiving, one summer and Dylan’s 20th birthday in August have passed with Cooley and Rounds wondering what happened to their boy.

“Every day has been a first. This whole year has been at first,” Cooley tells EastIdahoNews.com.

For months there were no answers. Then, in March, 59-year-old James Brenner was charged with one count of aggravated murder and one count of abuse or desecration of a human body.

<snip>
Brenner was squatting on property near Dylan. He has a violent criminal history, according to court records, and video captured on Dylan’s phone the morning he disappeared showed Brenner with blood stains as he cleaned a gun, charging documents say.

Brenner’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 5 in Box Elder County, Utah, and Dylan’s parents are frustrated the legal system is taking so long.

“We feel like he’s sitting in jail laughing because you get charged on March 3, and here we are almost three months later, and he still hasn’t even been arraigned,” Cooley explains.

Family reflects on 1-year anniversary of Dylan Rounds' disappearance

It’s been officially one year since 19-year-old Dylan Rounds disappeared from Lucin, Utah. Since then, a man has been charged for his murder, but Rounds' body has yet to be found.

Rounds moved to Lucin last year to pursue his dream of being a farmer.

Tuesday marked one year when his mother, Candice Cooley, called law enforcement to report him missing.

“It was just that gut feeling that you knew,” she said.

The last time Rounds contacted his family was May 28, 2022.

Since then, Cooley has never given up the search for her son in the desolate lands of western Utah.

“You’ve got to have an answer. When you have an answer you can start to process. Until you have an answer you can’t process it,” said Cooley.

For Rounds' family, there’s no justice or peace of mind until Rounds is finally found.

“You don’t want to do a memorial, you don’t want to do anything until you have answers, so you just stay recluse and get through the weekend, and that’s what all of us did,” said Cooley. “It was easier to not deal with people.”

Gotta give it to Nate that he covered this. I don't see another one that did. WhaBret happened to Duty Ron who had mom on a lot, etc. for instance? I don't watch him any longer so not sure.

Not a lot interesting but for that very reason it kind of is. This is the county I guess that mom yelled about but I give them this, they had cameras, unlike so many cases we see ow that don't or the judges think they can seal all etc. and keep cameras out.

One thing I noted is that there is something federal here where the feds have an interest and so scheduling had to consider that. I'm tired, and I am not fresh on it, but did we know that...?

Brenner appeared, shackled obviously, in prison orange. Antoher more normal (or used to be) thing than like the Kouri Richards thing (not sure I have name right) where first thing she has her attorney ask is to attend in street clothes and even if found guilty to attend sentencing in street clothes. WHAT?? and WHY at that point?

Again it isn't full of any major things but is clearly a small county courthouse with county lawyers and for that reason alone, and it is short, I'd suggest watching it.

The mom in this case, as we know, has come down on them pretty hard, well dad too, and here we get our first glimpse.

I don't really have anything or positive or negative to say about this hearing.

i see I did more than a few typos. Forgive me I think they affect nothing in clear what word i meant etc. Tired. Was to work a shift starting at 10 tomorrow but someone needed me to switch today to being there at 7. Long days and hours.

So I'm not going to go back and edit my errors. So there :bigtongue:
