Family offering $20,000 reward for man who disappeared after ‘weird run-in’ with stranger

Katie Wells of Rigby tells EastIdahoNews.com her nephew, Dylan Rounds, was last seen Saturday in Lucin, Utah, on the farm where he is working. Rounds apparently called several family members last Wednesday after having a “weird run-in” with a guy on a gravel road.

“The man was walking down the gravel road barefoot. He flagged Dylan down, who was in his truck. He asked to use Dylan’s phone and was acting erratically. Dylan felt the man was dangerous and may have been high. When he asked Dylan for a ride, (Dylan) did not give him a ride,” Wells explains.

Wells says the man was spotted in Montello, Nevada several days later asking about Dylan and there are reports that the man got a ride to Dylan’s trailer on Saturday.

“We don’t believe anything was ransacked,” Wells explains. “Dylan is missing, his phone is missing and his wallet.”

Noting Dylan’s age, Wells says some people seem to think Dylan ran off, but she suspects foul play.

“He is an old soul, farm boy at heart. All he wants to do is get up and work all day every day. He isn’t interested in partying, he isn’t interested in travel. He never dated in high school. He’s not your typical 19-year-old,” Wells says.

Dylan’s mom, Candice Cooley, lives in Twin Falls and his dad, Justin Rounds, lives in Ucon. They are actively involved in the search and are offering a $20,000 reward to anyone who finds him or knows where he might be.

Gotta give it to Nate that he covered this. I don't see another one that did. WhaBret happened to Duty Ron who had mom on a lot, etc. for instance? I don't watch him any longer so not sure.

Not a lot interesting but for that very reason it kind of is. This is the county I guess that mom yelled about but I give them this, they had cameras, unlike so many cases we see ow that don't or the judges think they can seal all etc. and keep cameras out.

One thing I noted is that there is something federal here where the feds have an interest and so scheduling had to consider that. I'm tired, and I am not fresh on it, but did we know that...?

Brenner appeared, shackled obviously, in prison orange. Antoher more normal (or used to be) thing than like the Kouri Richards thing (not sure I have name right) where first thing she has her attorney ask is to attend in street clothes and even if found guilty to attend sentencing in street clothes. WHAT?? and WHY at that point?

Again it isn't full of any major things but is clearly a small county courthouse with county lawyers and for that reason alone, and it is short, I'd suggest watching it.

The mom in this case, as we know, has come down on them pretty hard, well dad too, and here we get our first glimpse.

I don't really have anything or positive or negative to say about this hearing.

Did you see the part where Nate was interviewing Dylan’s parents and they said that Brenner stumbling into the courtroom was fake? Why would you fake that? So people would feel sorry for you or something? I didn’t get that.

He seems to be very sorry for himself, so I guess he wants others to feel that way too.
What a SOB.

James Brenner, man accused of killing Dylan Rounds, appears in Utah court

The man accused of killing Dylan Rounds limped into a Utah courtroom Monday afternoon wearing an orange jumpsuit, handcuffs around his wrists and shackles on his ankles.

James Brenner spoke only one word during the nine-minute hearing in the Box Elder County Courthouse. An EastIdahoNews.com camera was rolling as 1st District Judge Brandon Maynard asked Brenner if he was OK with the timeline of future hearings and Brenner responded, "Yes."

The 59-year-old is charged with aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a human body along with some firearms charges.

During Monday's hearing, Michael Studebaker, Brenner's attorney, asked Maynard to appoint co-counsel to assist in the defense.

Maynard said he would look into having an additional defense attorney appointed and explained the challenges the court has to deal with as Brenner is facing both state and federal charges.

"Here's the problem that is presented in this case. Mr. Brenner is in federal custody and each time this court acts, it has to get permission from the federal government to bring Mr. Brenner in," Maynard said.

Wardle said the process takes six weeks, so Brenner's next court appearance, where a decision will be made on whether to hold a preliminary hearing, won't be held until July 31.

Candice Cooley and Justin Rounds, Rounds' parents, were in the courtroom with extended family members and explained how they felt seeing Brenner walk into the hearing.

"He's despicable. His whole act of limping around is a complete act," Cooley told EastIdahoNews.com. "I don't know if it's so we think he's going to die or make him some sort of deal, but he wants people to feel sorry for him."

Rounds added, "He looks for attention to have people feel sorry for him. That's all. I think it's an act."

Not sure but hardly a new thing for defendants to fake all sorts of things. Their mental status, illness, being a newly converted one to get Kosher meals a/k/a Stauch, etc.

Nothing about Brenner I have ever heard would make me give him the benefit of the doubt. Jmo though.

I hope they will find Dylan soon. He seemed like a sweet guy, living his dream. So bitter his future got stolen like this. 🥺
Without a doubt. This creep (Brenner) has nothing redeeming about himself or he could give the answers to where Dylan is. I am sure he never will, he doesn't have a drop of decency in him from anything I've seen to date.

'GROSS NEGLIGENCE' | Dylan Rounds’ mom blames cops for huge search delay when suspect James Brenner ‘clearly moved missing son’s body’
DYLAN Rounds has been missing for almost 500 days, but his devastated mom is still searching for answers.

There's no body and the man accused of killing the 20-year-old on his farm in Lucin, Utah following his disappearance on May 28 last year has not been convicted.

When mom Candice Cooley sat down with The U.S. Sun at CrimeCon in Orlando for an emotional and heartfelt interview, the anger and frustration over the way the Box Elder Police force handled the investigation was evident throughout.

She said she still can't believe the incompetence of officers and strongly believes her beloved son was "literally under our feet" before he was allegedly moved by the killer.

Dylan's boots were found near the area where Brenner was living, and a cell phone was discovered at the bottom of a nearby pond.

The pair knew each other and Candice fears they became embroiled in an argument that resulted in Dylan being shot.

In a letter sent to the Sheriff's Office last August, she also fumed about Dylan's disappearance not being reported to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NAMUS) until four weeks after he vanished.

New DNA evidence was found recently by expertly trained dogs and is being examined in the hope of further pinning the disappearance on Brenner.

Another preliminary hearing which was scheduled for Monday, October 2, has now been moved to Monday November 13, but Candice has already seen enough false dawns to last a lifetime.

"I understand our judicial system is slow," Candice told The U.S. Sun.

"But no arraignment in seven months is just unacceptable. If nothing happens with this next hearing I will push for a change of venue. The process has to move. Something has to happen."

Candice and the rest of Dylan's family have been tearing their hair out after some baffling moves from the authorities.

She questioned why Brenner was given two attorneys.

"By law, he shouldn't get two attorneys, it's not capital murder and it's not the death penalty," she said.

She will also never understand why it took so long for sniffer dogs to be unleashed around the area where it's believed Dylan was last seen.

"It's almost as if they are waiting for him (Brenner) to die," she said.

"I just don't understand it. We have the evidence to prosecute and we have the charges."

"Brenner is not going to tell us anything until the charges are real," she concluded. "He wanted to cut a deal with some of the other charges but there's no way in hell we will leave this unsolved."

Saying 500 days makes it seem much longer. That his mom has had to wake up that many days without her son, Or answers.

Hearing for suspect accused of killing Dylan Rounds delayed as family continues search for missing man

A court hearing for the man accused of killing Dylan Rounds was postponed this week as the search for Rounds continues in the remote Utah desert.

James Brenner, 59, is charged with aggravated murder and abuse or desecration of a human body along with some firearms charges. A hearing was scheduled Monday in Brigham City but was continued, leaving Rounds’ family frustrated.

“We understand our justice system is slow but we have had charges since March and have not even had an arraignment. That’s just unheard of,” Candice Cooley, Rounds’ mother, tells EastIdahoNews.com.

Because he faces federal and state charges, there have been complications with Brenner’s court proceedings.

“Here’s the problem that is presented in this case. Mr. Brenner is in federal custody and each time this court acts, it has to get permission from the federal government to bring Mr. Brenner in,” Utah First District Judge Brandon Maynard said during a June hearing.

Despite the delays, Rounds’ family has spent the summer searching for Dylan in Lucin with heavy equipment and K9 teams focused on the area where Brenner was staying before Rounds disappeared.

“That’s all we have to go off of. People ask us all the time what’s new with the search and we really kept everything we are doing private because of how much craziness there has been with people coming out. We’re out there and we’re looking but we are keeping it to our private groups right now,” Cooley explains.

Brenner’s next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 13 in Box Elder County, Utah.

Grieving family of missing teen Dylan Rounds face agonizing wait after murder suspect’s hearing delayed for six months

THE devastated family of Dylan Rounds continues to play an agonizing waiting game in the desperate search for answers.

She was hoping a court case would start before the end of the year after a hearing slated for October was moved to November.

But the Rounds family was informed last week that, because of a scheduling conflict with one of Brenner's defense attorneys, the preliminary hearing won't start until May.

Candice wants action now - but knows with a date now set in stone, there is at least some light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

They feared the judge would stall the case yet again but Candice, who has fought tirelessly for answers, told The U.S. Sun: "Yes, it's disappointing it takes that long, and it's actually because of the attorney's schedule but it's not another continuance.

"It originally sounded like that was going to be the case but then the defense surprised us all.

"Everyone wanted it sooner but it's up to the judge and he said May so we just have to stick with that," she added.

"There's nothing we can do with that, we are at the mercy of the judge. To me, it's crazy to think that an attorney could be busy until May. He has two attorneys and it's only one of them who's tied up until May, but at least something is moving forward."https://www.the-sun.com/news/9873642/dylan-rounds-james-brenner-court-date-killing-missing-person/#

I'm surprised she thinks that is set in stone. Such never is. And that's just until a PRELIMINARY?? And that will be two years since he disappeared and from that first thing, an early on case thing, a preliminary, the rest could be another three years at the rate they have excuses and reasons.

And yes, she is right, it is crazy one atty. is booked until May, etc. They are OVERBOOKED and take on too many if that is even true. It is often a bunch of b.s. to get later dates. I know this for a fact, I've been told it and I've seen it done to buy time.

It surprises me she is somewhat okay with it, thinks there is light at the end of the tunnel and that this is set in stone. I've never seen anything like this set in stone. Judge might say that's it, no more delays and then we are going forward or give a warning but it still isn't true or set in stone.

This is a sad case too, they do not have their son back/his body. I think they and all of us out here in the public are pretty sure he is dead sadly.

What a creep the perp is. Not a decent bone in his body. Give them their son.

Are you off for the holiday from school already? See you've been updating a lot of cases. I'm so out of touch with everyone.

I can't imagine what torture this is to his family! Candice doesn't have any illusions about Dylan's fate I guess.
And all because of that whining coward.

Yeah I don't think she holds out any hope he is alive nor does Justin. For good reason I'd say. I don't think he is either.

You nailed it with calling Brenner a whining coward. He is the epitome of such. On this earth breathing air and taking up space for no good reason.. Worthless vermin.

Not a go to channel of mine but he has Candace on and one has to admit this case has had no attention at all in months anywhere. So bumping Dylan and it is worth hearing how this case is not moving and more.

Just like if Nancy or whoever had a family member on and the person is not your fave reporter, they HAVE a family member on so I watch.

Actually worth it too.
