Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

In the midst of all the rumors and leaks, I'm wondering about that car! They sure are focused on it and with all the media coverage on this case, I thought they'd find it quickly. But no, it's still a mystery!
Makes me wonder if they even have the right type of car mentioned, especially with the way they have backtracked so much on what they have made public themselves.

Idaho murder victim's family hires local attorney amid frustrations with police probe

The father of Idaho victim Kaylee Goncalves has hired a local attorney amid a souring relationship with police and concerns over missteps in the quadruple homicide probe.

The family recently retained Shanon Gray, of Gray Law Criminal Defense, whose cases have ranged from kidnappings to drunken driving arrests.

Gray, who began his career as a prosecutor in the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office, recently moved from Portland, Oregon, to Moscow, Idaho, Kaylee's father Steve Goncalves told Fox News Digital.

"I have a lawyer for a reason," Goncalves said in an exclusive interview Sunday. He added that he rarely communicates with police directly anymore. "They talk to my lawyer now," he added.

Moscow murders: Tuesday marks one month since stabbing near campus

Tuesday marks one month since the stabbing attack that claimed the lives of four students near campus at the University of Idaho. In its latest update, the Moscow Police Department (MPD) asked the public to "stay focused on the official facts" released by police.

In a news release Tuesday, Moscow Police said it has received tips based on "rumors and speculation," rather than official case information, due to swirling ideas surrounding the investigation.

In a press release video posted Tuesday, MPD Captain Roger Lanier reflected on the events of Sunday, Nov. 13, and his reaction to the first reports of what happened on King Road.

"It was hard … It took me a second. I really had to think about what I had just heard. Four murders in Moscow, Idaho, is so out of character," Lanier said. "Once I got over the initial shock, I knew I was coming to the station. So, I drove in and everybody just kind of fell into a role. That was a all-hands-on-deck moment. It became fairly apparent when I got to the scene that we were going to need resources outside of just what the Moscow Police Department could provide."

Lanier said the conflicting information has had an "unfortunate" impact on the victims' families, students at the University of Idaho and friends of the four killed one month ago. Lanier said some of the victims' friends have received "death threats."

On Monday, Lanier also said based on some new tips, Moscow Police have been re-interviewing people apart of the case in order to clarify some of the information police have been receiving.

Many videos have been submitted to the FBI digital tipline, Lanier said, including videos from gas stations and the area around King Road. Lanier called the massive amount of tips "a daunting task" that police have many analysts to handle.

"We've been trying to use those videos to garner new information," Lanier said. "There is hours and hours of video."

Police are also interested in a 2011-2013 white Hyundai Elantra with an unknown license plate. Lanier said that they believe the car was in the area at the time of the murders and the occupant(s) of the car may have seen something. MPD is looking to speak with whoever was in the car that night.

Police are also withholding information they have in order to refrain from compromising the investigation, Lanier said.

"We are keeping that information safe," Lanier said. "We owe that to the families and we owe that to the victims. We want more than just an arrest. We want a conviction."

Lanier warns people in the video to stay away from propagating rumors and information that has not been confirmed by police.

"It is very very frustrating for investigators, it makes it hard to stay on track," Lanier said.

Police are still accepting tips through their tip line and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

"Anything could break this open for us," Lanier said.

There is still no suspect.

I don’t understand this decision. I do hope it helps, however.

I think the cops are going to ask the attorney to try and make this guy understand that he's creating a lot of problems for the police department and that he'll tell you whatever the police tell you. I'll call you every day to update you on whether or not any information was given to me today.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Friends have been getting death threats. I've heard of suspects and people who it was pretty obvious they were the person responsible, But not that. All of this back and forth, Posting news that doesn't matter. This case has become so muddled, It may have already become unsolvable. Do people think the perpetrator isn't keeping up with the news?. There is already way too much out there.

Yeah. He wasn't doing any favors for the case by not keeping his mouth shut. I understand the anger and pain. But he has to think of what's best to solve the case.

Major incident across state lines at WSU this morning. Unrelated.

Police in Washington – just miles from the Moscow, Idaho, crime scene where four local college students were murdered – descended upon a neighborhood near a different university for what police are describing as an unrelated incident.

Okay we don't have to be experts to say Cops 101 get your azz in front of all the news you can on day one and canvas the neighborhood and get ALL video and tell ALL people with video and all businesses to SAVE it and provide it to you.

I can't count the number of cases that they don't even look for video until sometimes a month later and then it has already been overwritten/filmed over/discarded. NO EXCUSE.

AND if you hear of a murder or a case in your area and you work somewhere that has video even if across town, duh, save it or tell your boss, you know what, who knows, let's save that and the preceding day and day after just in case because who knows...

If you are a homeowner with a ring doorbell or home security cams, same goes.

Crime scene and DNA important yes, get right on it. But also get your officers out in that neighborhood collecting VIDEO on day ONE andg et on the news requesting it!!. Assinine IF true that it was Day NINE. I think in Morphew it was over 30. And they wonder why the criticism and suspicion in cases.
