Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

No, he does not live in the home.
But apparently he was NOT at the home or with the victims, or needing help finding his phone, and he was apparently sleeping at the time.

There were seven unanswered phone calls made from the phone of one of the victims, Ms. Goncalves, to her longtime boyfriend in the early morning hours on Sunday, according to her older sister, Alivea Goncalves, based on phone logs she was able to download from the phone provider.

The first call to the man, Jack DuCoeur, was at 2:26 a.m., and there were six more over the next 26 minutes, with the final one at 2:52, Ms. Goncalves said. She said Mr. DuCoeur, also a student at the university, missed them because he was sleeping, and that her sister’s phone account did not show any other calls.

Ms. Goncalves said Mr. DuCoeur, who did not respond to a request to discuss the case, had been a childhood friend of her sister’s . She said that they had been dating for years until recently, when they decided to take an amicable break. Ms. Goncalves said she and her family “stand behind Jack 100 percent and know he absolutely had nothing to do with this at all.”

She also said that the number of calls was not unusual: Kaylee Goncalves would frequently call people late at night, and often until they picked up, even to ask a mundane question like what she should have for a meal, her sister said.

Bill Thompson, the top prosecutor in Latah County, said investigators were looking at cellphone tower data and social media information to try to determine who was in the immediate area at the time of the killings.
Hmmm. That is what I thought. And it also confirms a thing or two I wondered...

Is this the same couple where the guy's mom said he was bringing her home for Thanksgiving or was that the other girl and her bf's mom who spoke?

What am I missing, why Georgia LE? The cases of the teen girls are IN and IA.

I too wondered if it was a sorority house or a rental. I don't think it is a sorority house with the one bf living there. I think he lived there as a roommate and wasn't just visiting right?

I never lived college much less sorority life but they can live off campus can't they? I know some colleges require dorm rooms freshman year only and most kids by their second year rent together big houses, usually old ones in some areas. This home looked pretty nice the photos I saw for a college rental especially. One can make good rent that way and yet be affordable to kids but one also risks parties, damage and more.

I think this more likely a grudge, revenge, jealousy or something like that. Jmo though.
GBI was consulting with Indiana State Police on Delphi. GBI apparently has a high tech, state of the art crime lab and technology.

I thought it was one of the girls' sisters who said they took an Uber...? I assumed they were able to check her app or something. Maybe she was told that by LE?

This makes me think of that child case where there was said to be a video and then wasn't...
An Uber company official said there was no record whatsoever of them requesting Uber. Maybe they used Lyft instead, if they had requested a ride, but the "private party" offered them a ride first instead?

Maybe I knew that, not sure I did. Or forgot. Some of these cases are hard to remember all the things over time or it is me lol.

So just recently you mean they are assisting? Or back in the beginning on the Delphi case?

If I have it right and if it iis not incorrect info/rumor, the guy in the background in the food truck video lives basically next door to them. He arrived with them at the food truck and maybe if he lives that close and was with them he gave them a ride?

The big friendly dude in the video who was talking to him came forward and has spoke online. He also said cops never contacted him, he contacted them. Said background guy was nice, humorous, etc. I believe... Didn't know any of them, just talked to them since all at the food truck.

I swear by none of this but pretty sure it is accurate. I am most unsure of him leaving nearby but seemed legit.

The property manager provided a hand drawn layout.

Reading the article has details regarding the floors.

Thanks, this is very helpful.

So none of the BRs are actually next to each other. And there are six so one was not used as a BR for a student renter I take it. The consensus seems to be he likely entered through the back deck/patio sliding door. So if he didn't go to the lower level, that would explain those two not hearing anything. It does seem likely the person knew them and knew which bedrooms each was in though and one bedroom wold be empty at least as far as used for sleeping purposes.

If the girls had their phones when they made those calls (and it wasn't someone else), they were up and active right before their murders. And making calls. Probably together as they both called the guy. So I would assume quite possibly in the kitchen/living area which is where someone entered most likely...

We don't even know that there wasn't an after party at this place or others there. Or there just before. Or anything. The person wouldn't have had to enter, may have been there with them, who knows...? Could have been their driver who we don't know is a friend or just someone who offered a ride, etc.

Missed the live. Can re-watch here. Not much new...but I did summarize below.

Summary:

646 tips received - all will be processed, vetted, investigated and cleared. Over 90 interviews so far.
Asking for observations of "notable behavior", video surveillance, or relevant info - please call tip line or email

Case summary and timeline - hasn't really changed.
911 call made from phone of survivor from inside the residence. Name of caller not released.
2 victims on 2nd floor, 2 victims on 3rd floor.
Autopsy summary - no changes.

We are aware of number of calls to male.
Rumors of victims being tied and gagged are not accurate.

No suspects in custody. Not located a weapon.

STOP with rumors. Rely on official sources and be patient.

University of Idaho will be offering many options to students to finish the semester, including off campus options.

QUESTIONS:

You've said the killings are targeted. Can you share why you believe this? - Because of the totality of circumstances. We are not able to say if any one person was targeted due to the investigation.

Do you have the resources you need? - We do. State Police, FBI, Latah County are all helping. If we need additional support it will be given.

Was the killer the 911 caller? - No

You said the 911 call came from the roommates phone, was the roommate the one who called? - We're not divulging that info. Part of investigation still.

The male subject the women called, has he been ruled out? - We've followed up on it. We believe there's no connection there.

Can you rule out the person that called 911 from inside the home as a suspect? -

You're not confirming a roommate called 911, only that the roommate's phone was used. Was someone else in the home? - Yes. There were other friends that had arrived at the location.

Is the killer still within the community? - We are looking everywhere evidence would lead us. I can't say if they are here or where they are right now.

Do you still believe this attack was done by one perpetrator? And if so, how does one person kill 4 people at night and not wake up the other 2 roommates? - Our investigation will continue to look at all avenues. I cannot disclose that info. And I don't know how it happened without the others hearing.

You've said the victims were found on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Can you say who was found where? - I'm not going to disclose that.

Original Information:
On the evening of November 12th, Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were at a local bar called The Corner Club at 202 N. Main Street, in downtown Moscow, between 10 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. on November 13th. At approximately 1:40 a.m., Kaylee and Madison were seen on video at a local food vendor called the “Grub Truck” at 318 S. Main Street and used a private party for a ride home from downtown to arrive at their 1122 King Road residence at 1:45 a.m.

Investigators have determined that Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were seen at the Sigma Chi house on the University of Idaho Campus at 735 Nez Perce Drive. At approximately 1:45 a.m., Ethan and Xana are believed to have returned to the residence at 1122 King Road. It was previously reported that Ethan resided at the home, however, it has been determined that he was only visiting.

Detectives believe that on November 12th, the two surviving roommates had also been out in the Moscow community, separately, but returned home by 1 a.m. on November 13th. The two did not wake up until later that morning.

On November 13th, at 11:58 a.m., a 911 call requested aid for an unconscious person. The call originated from inside the residence on one of the surviving roommates’ cell phone. Moscow Police Department responded to the residence and found the four victims on the second and third floors.

Autopsies were conducted on November 17th. The Latah County Coroner confirmed the identity of the four murdered individuals and their cause and manner of death as homicide by stabbing. The coroner stated the four victims were likely asleep, some had defensive wounds, and each was stabbed multiple times. There was no sign of sexual assault.

Detectives are seeking all outside surveillance video taken from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, from businesses and residences within the geographical area listed below. Detectives request all available videos – whether there appears to be motion and content or not.
• West Taylor Ave (north boundary)
• West Palouse River Dr (south boundary)
• Highway 95 south to the 2700 block of Highway 95 S (east boundary)
• Arboretum & Botanical Garden (west boundary)

Additionally, detectives seek additional tips and surveillance video of any observed suspicious behavior on the night of November 12th into the early hours of November 13th while Kaylee Goncalves and Madison Mogen were in downtown Moscow and when Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were at the Sigma Chi house. Anyone who observed suspicious behavior near these areas or has video surveillance are asked to submit their tips.

At this time in the investigation, detectives do not believe the following are involved in this crime:
• Two surviving roommates,
• Male in the Grub Truck surveillance video, or
• Private party driver who took Kaylee and Madison home on November 13th

Additional information related to the investigation:
• The identity of the 911 caller has not been released.
• Investigators are aware of multiple phone calls from victims Madison and Kaylee to a male.
• Online reports of the victims being tied and gagged are not accurate.
• Detectives seized the contents of three dumpsters on King Road to locate possible evidence.
• Local businesses were contacted to determine if a fixed-blade knife had been recently purchased.
• Currently, no suspects are in custody, and no weapon has been located.

To date, nearly 600 tips have been received. All tips are processed, vetted, investigated, and cleared. Thirty-eight interviews have been conducted with individuals who may have information about the murders.

Tonight I’ve been packing up shipments for some sales that I had and I’ve been playing this video in the background while I’ve been working. I think it has everything you’ve ever wanted to know about this case so far. But it is long! If you use the bar at the bottom, he lets you know what can be found at each stage of his video. Like the part that has the layout of the house, etc.

They were unable to see any blood or disturbance from multiple stab wounds?
Were they afraid of being in trouble for possible drug or alcohol use? So friends were summoned instead of 911?
I know they're saying no one at the home at the time of the 911 call is a suspect. But it continues to baffle me. Not that I suspect them. Just how things could unfold in the way that they have.

The only thing I can come up with is possibly covered with a blanket or similar?

The clearing of the roommates, people at the house, guy at the food truck and driver who took them home is unusual imo. They may be entirely right but just how can they say that? What could they possibly have that would exclude all of these people? Not DNA. It is far more usual for LE to say everyone is still a suspect and no one has been ruled out.

As for the unconscious person report, that is odd as well but I can only put it down to their age and denial. We follow crime and also know generally a lot of blood means they are likely dead but things can look bad and a person just need life saving help and has a chance. Maybe they saw blood and were freaked and scared to approach and called friends for help and then 911 and were HOPING the person could be saved and maybe were barely alive or something... It would seem they didn't go far or approach or look for the others or they would have known there was more than one victim.

Maybe it is also possible the one victim they saw didn't have much blood that could be seen.

Or maybe one actually hadn't expired yet and was unconscious but then did expire before help arrived.

Finally, yes, a blanket could have covered or something the perp put there to conceal, stage, etc.

What seems to me he most likely is they just saw one and panicked and hoped they were seeing an unconscious injured person, stopped instead of looking further and called friends and then 911.
