A 22-year-old New York woman who documented her cross-country van road trip on social media was reported missing by her mother on Saturday after her fiancé returned to their home in Florida without her, reports said.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on their road trip on July 2 from Blue Point, New York, Newsday reported.
The two were living in a 2012 Ford Transit van and documenting their travels on Instagram and YouTube, often using the hashtag #vanlife.
Petito was last seen checking out of a hotel with Laundrie on August 24. She last spoke to her family on the phone the next day, telling them she had arrived at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said.

Her mother told reporters on Monday that she FaceTimed with Petito around August 23 or 24.
Petito's most recent Instagram post was shared on August 25.

Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday that she was unsure whether her daughter had left Grand Teton. She said she exchanged texts with Petito's number twice after August 25.
"I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text," Schmidt said. "I didn't verbally speak to her."
Laundrie eventually returned to the couple's home in North Port, Florida, without Petito, though it was not clear when he arrived, the Daily Mail reported.
The police in New York's Suffolk County said Schmidt filed a missing-person report on Saturday.

"Petito, 22, of Blue Point, is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds," the press release said. "She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads 'let it be.'"

The press release said authorities had recovered the couple's van during their investigation.
Petito and Laundrie had been living in North Port together for two years before they set out on their road trip, the Daily Mail said. Petito announced their engagement on Instagram in July 2020.

She could be anywhere as they were traveling cross-country. I put the location as the last place her family could verify that she was still in communication.

Exactly. IF it was such a fantastic job, what explains why they didn't go back to this spot after the water went down. Papa Laundrie pointed out this spot as one of the places (so he says) that day they asked him to come out there but it was underwater. It's not like they weren't back out there shortly before they reopened the park. Must not have had a list of the places that they could check off as searched.
I missed a story. Where did Chris Laundrie say he pointed that out earlier?

but was it planned to be that? As in, did they all come to the conclusion that this would be better than being in prison? Were they afraid of unknown info coming out if a trial was to take place? Would the entire family be in deep doodoo if it came to a trial?

I am certain the parents at least, know far more about what happened to both Gabby and Brian than they are letting on.
I hear what you're saying. Very well could have been a planned last outing before the shtf. With the parents acting the way they have been I believe they would have been fine going through a trial. I believe it's Brian that could not have endured a trial or the loss of his freedom if he was found guilty (that is IF he murdered her). The notebook might tell us the answers to our many many questions.

Sorrry, I should have done this when I posted......

"Meanwhile, Brian Laundrie’s parents were at the reserve when human remains and a few of their son’s possessions were found Mr Bertolino told CNN.

He said: “Chris and Roberta Laundrie were at the reserve earlier today when human remains and some of Brian’s possessions were located in an area where they had initially advised law enforcement that Brian may be.”"

I am starting to think that the camping trip was possibly a "one last family get together" thing.
Maybe on his part or if the parents thought he was going to go on the run... I don't think the parents would have endorsed or been okay with his committing suicide but aside from that, yeah, it may well have been a last "see each other" before he took off...

It also could have been an effort before he was "suspected" or she was "found" to show he had nothing to hide, he even could have told his parents, Gabby took off on him out west or who knows at least when he first came home... The way they consulted an attorney seems to refute that they didn't know something though... At some point anyhow...

Dental records matched Brian Laundrie
Definite identification

Well, there must be then I am guessing a full jawbone or something close to it... In other words, it had better not be just a tooth or two or no one will buy it... It must be a jaw bone at least. Hopefully they confirm what they have for remains before long and of course I hope and assume they will follow this up with DNA.

Since I am sure that is likely the case, it pretty much closes it all out for me other than of course how he died, when and the murder of Gabby...

Sadly one has to wonder if he had been encouraged to get an attorney of his own and talk to police by that attorney and with that attorney if he would still be alive today. I don't mean an attorney shared by their parents who likely had reason to seek their own advice... Not a judgment just something I think they may always wonder but hard to say.

His parents need to be left alone to grieve if this is all what it appears to be and they do have remains that show certain death.

My heart also goes out to the Petitos and more so actually and naturally. They will never have the chance to face and confront Brian nor ask why, what, how... To his face.

wouldn't the first question be how did she take off and him with her van?

One would think... I'm just saying we can't know what he told them... He was not charged with the card use yet either so they wouldn't necessarily know that unless he shared it... Heck he could have told them at first she was dropped off at her folks or something or with a friend...

Now I'm not saying I believe that, just that it's possible... At least when he first "appeared"...

That attorney is really stupid. Basically he just said: "The family knew he killed Gabby and they called me to speak with Brian."
I have to say I wondered if they would be okay with him sharing that because you are right, he pretty much in a way threw them under the bus by admitting to that...

Brian should have went to his own attorney and his parents gotten advice of what to do in their shoes from their own imo. Not that he was necessarily willing to do that but he should have and then stayed and fought to defend himself with counsel of his own working for him...

EXCLUSIVE: The Laundries come clean: Former FBI agent believes Brian's parents may have avoided obstruction of justice charges by spilling what they know about Gabby Petito's murder and their son's whereabouts that led to discovery of his possible remains

  • Authorities could have issued Chris and Roberta Laundrie an ultimatum to help them find their son Brian or face years behind bars, law enforcement experts say
  • Former FBI agent Stuart Kaplan told DailyMail.com: 'I do believe that there was some sort of agreement where they accepted immunity in exchange for their full cooperation'
  • Kaplan said it's possible the parents 'ultimately realized' they could potentially face prosecution for obstruction of justice and decided to speak up
  • Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer told DailyMail.com prosecutors can't force the parents into revealing Brian's secrets without compelling evidence
  • Human remains were found at the Carlton Reserve Wednesday along with a backpack that contained some of Laundrie's belongings
  • Laundrie family attorney Steve Bertolino said the items were found near a bridge connecting the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park and the reserve
  • Laundrie, 23, is the sole person of interest in the murder of his fiancée, 22-year-old Gabby Petito

If they had cooperated from the start, he might still be alive.

I'm just saying that as a parent, most of us would require a reasonable explanation. Also her parents were calling them and they were refusing to answer their phones for over a week. So.....they definitely at least suspected something very bad - at the least. There is no plausible explanation for their behavior.
