A 22-year-old New York woman who documented her cross-country van road trip on social media was reported missing by her mother on Saturday after her fiancé returned to their home in Florida without her, reports said.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on their road trip on July 2 from Blue Point, New York, Newsday reported.
The two were living in a 2012 Ford Transit van and documenting their travels on Instagram and YouTube, often using the hashtag #vanlife.
Petito was last seen checking out of a hotel with Laundrie on August 24. She last spoke to her family on the phone the next day, telling them she had arrived at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said.

Her mother told reporters on Monday that she FaceTimed with Petito around August 23 or 24.
Petito's most recent Instagram post was shared on August 25.

Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday that she was unsure whether her daughter had left Grand Teton. She said she exchanged texts with Petito's number twice after August 25.
"I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text," Schmidt said. "I didn't verbally speak to her."
Laundrie eventually returned to the couple's home in North Port, Florida, without Petito, though it was not clear when he arrived, the Daily Mail reported.
The police in New York's Suffolk County said Schmidt filed a missing-person report on Saturday.

"Petito, 22, of Blue Point, is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds," the press release said. "She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads 'let it be.'"

The press release said authorities had recovered the couple's van during their investigation.
Petito and Laundrie had been living in North Port together for two years before they set out on their road trip, the Daily Mail said. Petito announced their engagement on Instagram in July 2020.

She could be anywhere as they were traveling cross-country. I put the location as the last place her family could verify that she was still in communication.

EXCLUSIVE: The Laundries come clean: Former FBI agent believes Brian's parents may have avoided obstruction of justice charges by spilling what they know about Gabby Petito's murder and their son's whereabouts that led to discovery of his possible remains

  • Authorities could have issued Chris and Roberta Laundrie an ultimatum to help them find their son Brian or face years behind bars, law enforcement experts say
  • Former FBI agent Stuart Kaplan told DailyMail.com: 'I do believe that there was some sort of agreement where they accepted immunity in exchange for their full cooperation'
  • Kaplan said it's possible the parents 'ultimately realized' they could potentially face prosecution for obstruction of justice and decided to speak up
  • Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer told DailyMail.com prosecutors can't force the parents into revealing Brian's secrets without compelling evidence
  • Human remains were found at the Carlton Reserve Wednesday along with a backpack that contained some of Laundrie's belongings
  • Laundrie family attorney Steve Bertolino said the items were found near a bridge connecting the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park and the reserve
  • Laundrie, 23, is the sole person of interest in the murder of his fiancée, 22-year-old Gabby Petito

Anything's possible but not sure I think this is what happened. I get a former agent says it's possible though and it was odd how this all suddenly was found yesterday when the parents were there, etc... but there are allegedly reasons for that... Hard to know what to think.

I'm just saying that as a parent, most of us would require a reasonable explanation. Also her parents were calling them and they were refusing to answer their phones for over a week. So.....they definitely at least suspected something very bad - at the least. There is no plausible explanation for their behavior.
I know. And not disagreeing as I think the same. Just saying the other slim possibilities that maybe they knew but not right away or etc., etc., etc. Not that I believe that. Not sure if we will ever know either...

I have no sympathy for them. They will never feel what Gabby's parents feel.
To each their own, many feel that way. I wouldn't wish a child's death on anyone though.

That doesn't mean I agree with them, understand them nor does it mean I don't feel far more sympathy for Gabby's family by far though. They have the son that likely caused all of this heartache and that has to be its own he77.

I cannot imagine ANY family supporting their child's suicide, saying it would be better than prison or for any other reason. I just can't.
None of us knows what went through their minds, but I have to think that they had no idea how this was going to turn out.
My son attempted suicide... 3 times. He was almost successful the last time. NEVER would I have endorsed this, my husband and I were devastated when it happened. That's been a long time ago, but it still haunts me to this day.
And for Brian to pick that swamp for the deed... that is just horrible to think about! It can't be easy for the L's. I'm not giving them a free pass but they've lost a son and a brother and an uncle. It can't get much harder to deal with than that.

I'm not sure it was suicide. It's possible the laundries were going to the park to meet with Brian and when he never showed up they became concerned. He could have been bitten by a snake, or attacked by an alligator.

That had to be a very hard time for you. I am so glad for you he came through that period in his life or I assume he did.

I can't wish this on anyone either. One can hate someone's actions on one hand but feel for them over the loss of a child on the other hand. I don't know why they made the choices they did but can only guess they were trying to navigate a situation of their son's making as best they could.

We may never know but hopefully they can determine the cause. In my opinion, it is far more likely it was suicide though. LE would not comment on whether they found a weapon, etc. That doesn't mean anything I guess but my guess is gunshot and it would fit finding a partial skull as well.

What kind of upset? Upset like outside the Moonflower in Moab or like at the Merry Piglets.
