Girl last seen in Manchester in October 2019; police seek tips from public

Manchester police are seeking tips from the public about the disappearance of a girl not seen in more than two years.

Harmony Montgomery, 7, was last seen in a home in Manchester in October 2019, when she was 5, police said.

Police said they first learned Harmony went missing earlier this week. Chief Allen Aldenberg did not specify who reported the girl missing but said his department has been in touch with multiple family members and will continue to speak with them.

Aldenberg said police are not searching for any adult or vehicle in connection with the case. Investigators are focusing on the whereabouts of Harmony.

"No time is a good time for a child to go missing," Aldenberg said. "I'm begging the community. I don't care if you saw this young girl a year ago and you think it's irrelevant. Call us."

Aldenberg said at a news conference Friday his detectives are working to confirm where Harmony is from and where she went to school before her disappearance.

Harmony is estimated to be approximately 4 feet tall and 50 pounds. Investigators said she has blonde hair, blue eyes and should be wearing glasses.

"We need help," Aldenberg said. "This remains a very active investigation."

Documents provide new details of state's interactions with Harmony Montgomery's family

Documents filed by Adam Montgomery's defense team are providing more details on the last month of his daughter Harmony's life.

Adam Montgomery is set to go on trial next month on assault and second-degree murder charges connected to the 5-year-old girl's death.

In a motion filed this week, the defense provided a report from the Division of Children, Youth and Families that details visits to the family's Gilford Street home during that time.

The visits took place in July, August and September of 2019. The case worker noted each time that there were no visible concerns.

The defense also provided documents from an urgent care visit in June 2019. The doctor described Harmony as a "well-appearing child, appropriate for her age, with no acute distress."

The DCYF documents also say that Adam Montgomery's uncle offered Kayla Montgomery $500 to have Harmony live with relatives in Florida. According to the documents, Kayla Montgomery told him, "Absolutely not."

Jury selection in the trial of Adam Montgomery is scheduled for Feb. 6.
"Absolutely not". I know the stepmother is a criminal. But just may have saved Harmony's life. But she was FAILED!!!! BY MULTIPLE PEOPLE!!!

That was a horrible read. All of it. Note the two to three entries of a black eye. One social worker clearly lied imo.

This child was failed by EVERYONE throughout her short 5 years from DAY ONE.

It is probably thanks to mom the fact she was missing ever became known but she failed her too and LOST her.

An uncle offered stepmom $500 to place her with other family, I'd hope for GOOD reasons. Stepmom refused. I'm sure she did. A few months of food and other benefits amount to more than that for her by far I'm sure. Why did she not TAKE IT and just falsely claim she was still with them for benefits as she did after she was murdered anyhow?!!

This duo is the lowest of the low pair of evil losers. How do you ever let your life go that far out of control and sink so far? You're dating someone living in a car!!!! Not that I'm sure she had many better options either.

She as well should be facing harsher charges but of course they need her to testify against him. I doubt she treated Harmony well either. Clearly. Or even cared.

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. —
A New Hampshire judge has made a ruling about what evidence the jury can see in the upcoming trial of Adam Montgomery, who is accused of murdering his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony.

The latest rulings by the judge give a preview of what could play out in the upcoming trial.

The judge ruled that the jury can see a video from a September 2021 encounter between Adam Montgomery and police in which officers questioned him about Harmony's whereabouts. But jurors won't be allowed to hear the audio of the questions put to him because of his right to remain silent.

The court also said prosecutors can only introduce evidence relating to alleged domestic violence against Adam Montgomery's wife, Kayla Montgomery, from between December 2019 and January 2022. Nothing involving incidents prior to that range can be admitted.

Prosecutors can also only discuss alleged neglect and abuse toward Harmony in that time frame.

Evidence of drug use can also be introduced. Prosecutors had argued that drug use can lead to paranoia, and it would answer a lot of questions, including why the family became homeless. Prosecutors also believe drug use is directly connected to the circumstances around Harmony's death.

When it comes to Harmony's mother, Crystal Sorey, prosecutors can introduce evidence related to Adam Montgomery keeping her from Harmony, but nothing regarding alleged domestic violence.

The judge said evidence relating to the criminal past and employment history of Kayla Montgomery – who is a key witness for the prosecution – can be addressed.

The judge also ruled that the charges of assault and second-degree murder will be tried together.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Feb. 6.

I think any time he ever did a thing to that child should be allowed in. And honestly abuse of his wives/gfs, etc but I'm sure that's just too unfair and prejudicial to the poor pitiful defendant.

But really with regard to abuse and neglect of Harmony, why the hell shouldn't it from any time frame?

Smh.

Praying he is found guilty. This trial is right around the corner. Anyone have any idea if it will be livestreamed?

So it will be streamed live! I won't get to watch much of course but there's far better info each day when reporters and the public get to stream it or one can go back and watch. Which I never get time to do either sadly. Thanks for the info!

Thank you. I hope someone I watch does recaps, not sure if any follow this one. I don't get to watch them all either.

Will look here for news article recaps if any too and comments.

This case crossed my mind today at work and I wondered if it had begun, I could remember the specific day this week.

This is so disturbing.

Thanks!

I'm going to be watching this trial as much as I can. Justice for Harmony!!!!!!!

I'm going to ignore it as much as possible til the verdict. I heard something about his punching her to death this morning and if sickened me. I already know about the specifics of some of the abuse, too much. So let that happen in court and then tell me the verdict.

Yeah I don't need those details either and the ones I have heard not by choice are already triggering. I will say I SO WANT justice for this little girl. And I am far from okay with "stepmom" either but I guess it takes a devil who COULD HAVE been Harmony's savior, to get the bigger devil.

That woman better do her job and do it well in this trial AND if she doesn't live a clean life and I ever hear about it I will YELL from the rooftops online.

I don't doubt she maybe suffered at his hands too but between drugs and that her bf had them living in a car, uhm why stay with him? Oh because she was a junkie too.

LET US NOT forget though judges and CPS in this case who PLACED this child with her father!!!

I don't want to think of the horrid details that I don't want to know all of but one of them is that Harmony went to the bathroom in the car and had an "accident". What were stepmom and dad doing , pissing and shitting on the sidewalk? SICKENING. She should thank her lucky stars she is free, real winners they both are, NOT.

MANCHESTER, N.H. —
Opening statements in the trial of Adam Montgomery could start as soon as Wednesday, but first, prosecutors and the defense must finish whittling down the jury pool. That selection process will continue Wednesday morning.

WMUR is streaming the entire trial in the video player above, when it's available. WMUR will not stream the jury selection process. It is anticipated that WMUR will resume streaming the trial live sometime Wednesday for opening statements.

The jury selection process will resume at 8:30 a.m. Both sides have selected 27 potential jurors, and the final 17 — 12 who will be seated and five alternates — will be picked from that pool.

Dozens of people from a second potential pool of jurors will also be at the courthouse on Wednesday in case they need to be drawn from.

Potential jurors are being asked about their exposure to the case, including media reports, social media posts and vigils for Harmony.

Once the jury is seated, the trial will begin — though both sides have not hammered out whether jurors will be taken to view scenes connected to the case first, or opening statements will occur first.

MANCHESTER, N.H. —
Adam Montgomery's attorneys plan to acknowledge the defendant's guilt on two of the charges when they deliver their opening statement on Thursday.

Adam Montgomery is accused of killing his 5-year-old daughter Harmony in 2019. He is charged with second-degree murder, second-degree assault, abuse of a corpse, falsifying evidence and witness tampering. Attorneys will admit to the charges of abuse of a corpse and falsifying physical evidence, he told Judge Amy Messer.

1:48 p.m.

Adam Montgomery said he understands that his attorneys will acknowledge his guilt on two of the charges -- falsifying physical evidence and abuse of a corpse -- during the defense team's opening statement, which will be delivered Thursday.

Adam Montgomery, who did not attend court Wednesday, waiving his right to appear at Wednesday's trial proceedings, spoke via teleconference with Judge Amy Messer about his attorneys' plans for the opening statement.

Messer asked Adam Montgomery if he understood that by admitting to those two offenses during the opening statement that the jury would likely find him guilty on those two charges. He said he did understand.

Before the teleconference with Adam Montgomery, the jury was excused to get ready to view scenes connected to the case.

1:27 p.m.

The jury will be taken past Elm Street, past Merrimack and up Market Street.

They will be asked to look out the right side of bus at 20 market street -- the location of the methadone clinic. Then, they will be asked to look at the neighborhood, the cars and the footpath.

Ben Agati said he assaulted Harmony in that building.

The jury will them come back to Elm Street and travel north on Elm to Webster Street, out to DW Highway and then to the Burger King. The state wants the jury to note how many stoplights there are and what the road conditions are. Then, the tour will cut over to 59 West River Drive, the first stop where jurors will get out.

When they visit the Colonial Village apartments, Agati will tell the jury to look up at the apartment building and note the lights.

They will then travel to the intersection that the state says the Chrysler Sebring died. This is where the state says Harmony died. He will want the jury to note the businesses, the traffic and the number of people around.

A tow truck driver and gas station attendant will testify about this location during the trial.

One more address on the list includes 644 Union Street -- the apartment where prosecutors say Adam worked to reduce Harmony’s body with lime in a shower.

The other address is the former Portland Pie Company restaurant were Montgomery allegedly stored Harmony’s body in a walk-in freezer.

1:12 p.m.

It's likely there will be no opening statements today because sources tell News 9 Investigates that Adam Montgomery is in negotiations to concede on a couple of the charges.

They are working with him over the phone, I’m told, as he is not here.

Instead, the jury will go on the view shortly. They are getting instructions now.

Crystal Sorey and her supporters were briefed about something by the victim witness advocate during the delay.

1:10 p.m.

Opening statements are delayed until Thursday.

Instead, the jury will view scenes connected to this case this afternoon.

Sources tell News 9 Investigates that Adam Montgomery is in negotiations to concede to some charges in this case. It's important to note that this does not end the trial and the jury will still view the scenes after the judge and each side give statements.

Continued:

1:58 p.m.

Adam Montgomery told the judge he understands the implications if he allows lawyers to concede in opening statements that he falsified physical evidence and abused a corpse.

This is still a very fluid situation and everyone involved is on edge a bit as the plan for trial is changing course.

The jury now boarding a bus for the view. The jury is unaware at this point of the possible concession.

Openings will likely be pushed to tomorrow.

Lawyers intend to tell jury in those openings that he will admit to falsifying evidence and abuse of corpse. When speaking with the judge, he acknowledged he understands this plan.
