Girl last seen in Manchester in October 2019; police seek tips from public

Manchester police are seeking tips from the public about the disappearance of a girl not seen in more than two years.

Harmony Montgomery, 7, was last seen in a home in Manchester in October 2019, when she was 5, police said.

Police said they first learned Harmony went missing earlier this week. Chief Allen Aldenberg did not specify who reported the girl missing but said his department has been in touch with multiple family members and will continue to speak with them.

Aldenberg said police are not searching for any adult or vehicle in connection with the case. Investigators are focusing on the whereabouts of Harmony.

"No time is a good time for a child to go missing," Aldenberg said. "I'm begging the community. I don't care if you saw this young girl a year ago and you think it's irrelevant. Call us."

Aldenberg said at a news conference Friday his detectives are working to confirm where Harmony is from and where she went to school before her disappearance.

Harmony is estimated to be approximately 4 feet tall and 50 pounds. Investigators said she has blonde hair, blue eyes and should be wearing glasses.

"We need help," Aldenberg said. "This remains a very active investigation."

The jury view portion of the trial has concluded. The judge informed both sides that she told jurors to return to the courthouse at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, with proceedings set to begin at 9 a.m.

The judge issued an order regarding transport for Adam Montgomery each day. They will ask him an hour before departure for transport if he wants to come to court that day.

If he pleads guilty for abuse of a corpse, is he going to tell us what he did with Harmony's body?????????????
One would hope, assuming there is anything left of her and that's as far as I'll go with that awful thought.

I smell trouble here though and suspect they are going to either blame the stepmom for her murder OR claim it was an accident and he panicked and covered it up OR helped her cover HER murder up. This is strategy imo plus they probably also hope the jury will believe if he tells the "truth" about being guilty of those charge, he is telling the truth when they wlll claim he did not murder her...

Those are my guesses.

What is tihs new b.s. of allowing a defendant to choose if he wants to come to court or not when he is CHARGED with MURDER and it's his OWN trial HE WANTED?!! It is his CHOICE? Since WHEN?

When and where are they going to draw the line on pandering to defendants?! Harmony had no choices in life.

Just saw this in another case, that it will be considered, the guy claiming he has a medical condition the stress of court aggravates. Well la-di-da. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE and I'd vote this judge out on THAT basis alone. He BELONGS in court. So now you have a jury that sees NO DEFENDANT or his actions, expressions and so on! It is WRONG.

Gee. I've always known a defendant has a right to face their accuser but I guess they don't HAVE to face their accuser now. it's funny, there have been cases where a rape victim or a child is scared to testify in court or someone subpoenaed but they are MADE to. Look though, now a defendant doesn't have to. This is serious new sh*t as our system continues to crumble.

Furthermore, a jury is tasked with deciding if the defendant is guilty without ever seeing such defendant in the courtroom if he so chooses. Just think of how odd this trial will feel with that chair empty, for a jury and for all.

Tell me, any time Adam needs to write a note or his attorneys consult with him, are they going to take a break or is he allowed to send in notes or talk to them via apparatus as the trial goes on?

This imo is a huge slap in the face to Harmony.

You know if he was on bond and fled he'd be caught and hauled into court. if he had an order to appear and did not, there'd be a warrant issued and he'd be hauled in.

What is this judge thinking and what grants the right to change the entire trial procedure?

Finally ,what are they going to give the jury as the reason the defendant is not there or are they going to say nothing and leave it to their conjecture or imagination? I was going to watch some of this today but right now I'm turned off to the thought of doing so. I'm not sure why other than I'm just disgusted with this ridiculous favor granted the defendant.

Watch this turn into grounds for appeal in one way or another. By the very defendant granted this favor.

I thought Lori Vallow wasn’t going to go to court and they forced her to come to court? I guess each jurisdiction is different.

Prosecution opening statement is completed.

Defense opening statement underway : Blaming Kayla for Harmony's death.
Kind of what I figured was coming based on his owning up to the other charges. It seemed to be all he could say while claiming he was helping her cover up.

Not in good humor right now re this case. Poor Harmony deserves justice. His claim she did this is going to be a hard one for the jury imo as her actions were not the actions of a saint. Of course prosecution can pound in he's never claimed this until now and pound on other things as well but both of them were present when she died to everyone's knowledge and she isn't exactly blame free...

Just got up, it is 9 here. Had no idea this started so early or that an opening statement would already be finished.

I think he will be found guilty but I have to say that defense was all they could go with and I hate saying it, but it isn't exactly something a juror would find impossible, that EITHER of them did this.

It is however further proof of what a lowlife evil individual he is, now putting his actions on someone else when he is the one who killed his own daughter and then hauled her around forever dead.

Pretty disgusted at the moment with it all.

And he should HAVE to be in court. Smdh.

Not sure about that. This is something that has never went on or been allowed to until recently imo. It's just another change that apparently happened or is happening right before our eyes or did happen unbeknownst to the public. And yes, the rare time ever a defendant tries to not come to court or refuses to, the judge orders them to as they are required to be there or such used to be the case. Letecia Stauch pulled it if I recall correctly and she was come down on and it made clear it was required.

This isn't a small thing, it is huge and once I get my thoughts together this morning, all the possible ramifications from this will b clearer to me but there are many imo.

It's a dumb move imo. I don't see a single reason any judge would grant such. If he is ordered or demanded to come, that is not grounds for appeal so why grant such a favor to the defendant?!

I can hear it already when he's found guilty. Then it will be, I wasn't there and it wasn't fair. Had the jury seen me all cleaned up in my nice suit crying for my daughter, they'd have seen I'm a good man and innocent. And even though he decided not to come he will blame the judge for letting him not know better and say the judge should have required it.

There's one, just for starters and it isn't out there as this is how ridiculous it has all gotten to be these days.

It's just so obviously wrong. It's the defendant's trial he requested/demanded and yet he does not have to attend. He's being tried in absentia, by choice.

He may show up some days, or not, but it makes no difference, he's allowed to do as he chooses. Guaranteed no one else has that right and would be subpoenaed if refusing to testify and found in contempt if they ignore the subpoena. I don't even have words other than it's just ridiculous. I may have better words later lol, or not.

I'm not amused and it is a slap in the face to Harmony, as if he didn't do enough of that, the twisted POS, in real life, and then abuse her corpse for ever after, and she sill is not resting in peace and that's unacceptable.

As you said earlier in the thread now that he admits to abusing her corpse he should be able to tell where she is so has he??!!

He's a piece of filth and now we are all deprived of glaring at him with angry eyes on screen or throwing darts or tomatoes at the screen. Slight attempt at humor. Sigh.

It's too early for this thinking and no coffee yet. I need to regroup and wake up. :) Thank goodness it's a day off.

Brutal opening statements. Jury is 100% attentive.

No one is crying. Stoic.

The gallery is stoic as well.

9:23 a.m.

A court-watcher drove up from Florida for this trial.

She said, "(I) have to be here for Harmony because no one else was."

She thanked WMUR for the commitment and coverage of this case.

Eight or nine Harmony/Crystal Sorey supporters are in the front row.

They are comforting each other. And the Victim’s Witness Advocate passed out tissues.

Crystal, Harmony's mother, is not here. She is on the witness list.

9:01 a.m.

There have been questions about how Adam Montgomery’s concessions that he falsified physical evidence and abused the corpse of little Harmony will impact the case.

As legal analyst Patricia LaFrance pointed out yesterday, opening statements are not evidence.

A lawyer very close to this case explains it this way:

A concession still technically requires the state to prove the charges, and he never has to testify. They'll probably say something like, "you're going to hear evidence of X, Y, and Z, and they're right, Adam did all those things, as horrible as they are. But he didn't kill Harmony."

The jury still has to find him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt based on the state's evidence.

The state has a large television set up and a long table full of enlarged photographs prepared.

There is no third chair at the defense table. Adam Montgomery will likely not appear again today.

From the opening statements, Adam's Uncle will be a key state witness, aside from Kayla. He will testify to an earlier episode (Adam not charged for this) in which he came home from Florida to find Harmony with a huge swollen face and black eye. Says Adam admitted to bashing her around the house. Kayla and Adam and kids were staying in his home at the time.

Defense says that Adam roughly pushed Kayla when Adam discovered Harmony smothering her 5 month old brother Declan, but he did not cause her to have the black eye.

Adam has not been charged for this episode, but will be interesting for the State to try to establish a pattern with Adam.

How often are people tried in absentia?

Trials in absentia are exceedingly rare—most judges and attorneys will never be involved with one. The procedure doesn't jibe with the notion of due process, especially the constitutional right of the accused to confront witnesses.

I think he will be found guilty and I'm praying for that conviction for justice for Harmony. I hope the prosecution brings their "A" game and kicks butt.

It must be pretty cushy in jail their for the monster not to want a day out and his likely last chance to see all his exes and his brother, etc. They probably have Netflix and he's binging and didn't want to miss an episode. Next they'll let him order Door Dash.

Sorry but I'm not enamored as it all goes further downhill while victims lose even more, not that they have sh*t for rights to begin with.

If someone had asked me 30 years ago if things could ever get this warped or whacked, I'd have laughed but here we are.

That's okay, even when conviction is won, someone will let out ALL murderers and not just some in probably about ten years from now. Maybe five.

After all, idiots run this world.

Well, the coffee is just starting to kick in barely so I'll get off my not well wired soapbox for the moment.

It's a good day in that trial for the murder of beautiful HARMONY MONTGOMERY is FINALLY taking place, even if all that should be required to be in attendance are NOT.

I've had enough coffee as I type this to start to try to find the bright side. First we don't have to look at the face of Harmony's loving, protective DADDY--gag, sarcasm of course. And second, the hardest thing about being in court as a victim's family member or testifying is having that defendant in the room. It will make it easier for the uncle and Kayla too for instance (IF he decides to not go when they testify) BUT I still see this being used for appeal even though it is HIS OWN decision. And that makes it not worth it.

A quick couple of searches showed me that it SEEMS or I THINK the prosecution would have to agree to his not being present so DID THEY?? I'm not 100 percent on that but it appears to be the case and it is also almost unheard of and rare that a defendant is not present. But now we head down another slippery slope where it will likely become common.

However, I'd think and hope that MOST judges would not allow such and require their presence but I'd never have thought it would happen here either and so...

Okay, I'm done. Long enough wasted on it. I wonder if I can accurately guess what @Mel70 would have to say about it. I think some swear words would be involved. I'd welcome it lol.

JUSTICE FOR HARMONY on its way. I hope and I pray.

Why didn't Adam's uncle SAY SOMETHING? It's so sad. I know it's hard to "turn in" family members, but this can be the result if you don't!

EDIT: I've been corrected! He DID say something and no one helped Harmony!
