ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

The decision on whether to charge a Pettis County sheriff’s deputy in the June killing of a 25-year-old Sedalia woman during a traffic stop has been handed over to a special prosecutor.

Hannah Fizer was fatally shot by the officer after she was pulled over the evening of June 13. The name of the deputy who shot her has not been released.

The investigation into Fizer’s death was completed Thursday by the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control and handed over to the Pettis County Prosecutor, Phillip Sawyer, on Friday.

People can disagree with me but the remark in this about there was no "keeping him safe from corona in jail"??? Why do their rights matter more than the victims' rights?? Of course, he was not yet convicted... Still...

And the variation in bond in states, counties, etc. is crazy. I saw a two million bond the other day and no one died. Granted, it was a case with several victims, I think, I can't even recall which case, but no deaths. Yet like our case, a child dies and he had $25,000 reduced to $10,000. And the facts were there. However, crazy as it sounds that is a HIGH bond in that area...

I am forming some opinions these past few months about things I never really paid a whole lot of attention to just a few years ago and for one, I think in some cases judges have too much discretion... Bond and such should have some parameters... And maybe some consistency.

But back to this case, the release of prisoners over Covid, only speaking for myself, enrages me. If they felt there was a reason for them to be in there to begin with, then it should stay that way.

that definitely needs looked into!

Sounds like another where body cam footage would protect both or all, why isn't there any? Multiple shots? She is unarmed. Hmm. Even if he thought she was, what then is the reason for continuing to fire?
exactly! This is also in the heart of "good ol boy" country, too. I am not taking a side as to what happened but we would not be here if there was body cam or even dash cam would have caught something.

Yes, I think you and I have agreed on that one before. There is only one real reason not to want body cam as it protects officers too from false allegations. I don't know enough to form an opinion on this case either but it sounds pretty hokey from what is said in the links thus far. That is a number of shots the way it sounds.

@Mel70 Here's one, how do you think that civilian patrol thing would have helped here? Sounds to me like there were plenty of civilians at this block party and don't people have a party to enjoy with their friends and neighbors? Notice how many apparently pulled weapons in this incident. Even an officer was at the party and was injured... Yah, civilian patrols in cities. That should do it...

Unusual. Why would you take yourself and your daughter out and leave your wife with both of those losses to deal with and do it while she is home?? Of course, they are guessing at the reason, they don't know for sure yet.
