Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

I am interested in the fact he went back to the scene at 9 am the next day (based on phone pings) and whether DM heard or saw him then too. It has been speculated he was looking for the sheath right?
Speculated, yes.
I agree it's very interesting, but we may never know why. Could have been to see if he dropped the sheath outside. Some are even suggesting he wanted to go back in, but I really doubt that. Could have been to see if there was any police activity there yet. Or to see why he hadn't seen anything in the news about a murder yet. Hard to say, at this point.

Or simply could have went back to observe what was going on.

It was a risk, that's for sure. I have heard that criminals often like to revisit scenes of their crimes. Arsonists are especially known for that, I believe.

That's a theory, but he could have just driven by to see how many law enforcement officers were on the scene and saw there were none!

ETA: Read newer posts and I see I'm not alone with this idea!

This vlogger goes by the pen name Johnny Law. I’ve learned a lot of technical information watching his YouTube, and I like the way he is not a sensationalist and usually stays with the facts. He is a known crime scene investigator and I’ve heard duty Ron, and a couple of others say they have a lot of respect for him. This video goes through the affidavit in detail, explaining how LE processes the scene. It’s lengthy, but if you want to really dive deep, it’s a good one.

Not surprising if it WAS him.
True, but with all the thousands of speculations on the internet, someone was bound to get close to being right. I don't think this is indicative of it being written by the person who did the crime. In fact, once he realized the sheaf was missing, I would think he kept a low profile.

That's creepy. I wonder if his motive was to pull off a crime and "solve" it to prove he's a great candidate for the PD. Of course, it all depended on his not getting caught. There was a fire investigator in California who had a knack for figuring out how a rash of fires were being set. He moved up in the department because of his uncanny ability to figure arson fires out very quickly.

Turns out he's the guy who was setting those fires.

Oh yeah! I remember hearing about that case! Well, maybe it was BK. Stranger things and all that. I'm sure someone called in the tip and their friends at the FBI can check out who was making the posts. They said he disappeared when BK was arrested, but he was banned from the group the night before so maybe the person gave up on it all.

If it was him it will be on his computer. They'll look at everything he did on it before and after the murders. If they find that he's the guy who posted that stuff, I'll believe they got the right guy.

Agreed. I hope they check it out one way or the other and see who it was and if they were possibly in the area. While the affidavit is compelling and it does lead me to believe they caught the right guy, I'm not completely convinced until all the evidence is presented. I learned my lesson from a couple of other cases in the past, one being the McStay case and the other would have to be discussed in the Political Forum. 😉

I was thinking about this last night and want to note it in case anyone else hears this theory. Someone was saying that the oddness of DM being seen and not attacked could be that she was actually in a dream state and didn't see the perp. I don't think so because the footprint was found in front of her room and gives credence to what she saw in that it appears it was going in the direction that she witnessed.

Since it was still dark, maybe she too was wearing dark clothing/pajamas and she just had the door open a little bit and he just plain didn't see her.

Adrenaline that had to be flowing might have also given him tunnel vision on getting out of there fast.
